Finishing first physically but placing second due to penalties is always a hard pill to swallow. But clean races win races when the competition is as tough as it is in Class 1. The rough, tight, and technical course of the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing fuels was especially hard on the Class 1 buggies. Six of the best teams competed and all had to drive slower than their usual pace to complete the course, but not without additional vehicle problems along the way. Since the Class 1 competitors decided among themselves not to participate in qualifying, they agreed the starting order for their class would be in the order in which they entered the race. This put 2021 Class Champion Cody Parkhouse in the No. 100 Jimco buggy off the starting line first, followed by the No. 121 Jefferies Buggy of Damen Jefferies, and the No 138. A flat tire early in the race led to lingering problems throughout the competition for Cody Parkhouse. Cody took over for his dad, Brian Parkhouse, shortly after the start of the race because of other commitments Brian had. But right after the start, he cut a sidewall on some brush and developed a leak in the left rear tire of the No. 100 Jimco Hammerhead. With only about a mile to their scheduled pit stop, he easily made it in for service. “Unfortunately, we didn’t quite have the smoothest tire change, and the tire wasn’t tightened up all the way. It took a while for it to loosen up and I started hearing some clicking noise about five miles before coming down the Goat Trail,” said Parkhouse. “I wasn’t sure what it was, but the car was feeling a little funny.” Read More
