ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, with entries rapidly pouring in from across the USA and around the world, Alan Ampudia, Brandon Wright, Britney Myers/Tamara Myers, Mike Walser, Mason Cullen, Clay Lawrence, Faelly Lopez, Ryan Liebelt, and Edward Muncey, are all among the latest entries for November’s iconic season-ending BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N, the season finale of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
LA GRAN CARRERA
The Granddaddy of All Desert Races, the SCORE Baja 1000 is at the pinnacle of motorsports as the most iconic, oldest, prestigious, toughest, and longest, continuously held desert race in the world.
This year, starting for the first time in La Paz, Baja California Sur Mexico, and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, race-week festivities and the race itself will be held Nov. 13-18.
This year’s race, the 25th Peninsula run in race history, will be a point-to-point race of 1310.94 miles UP Baja California’s majestically masterful peninsula.

Racer entry applications for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads are now available at www.SCORE-International.com under Race Info on the SCORE Baja 1000 page. Questions should be directed to SCORE Registration and Membership Director Shannon Lund at 775. 852.8907. Online racer entry applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. PT on Monday, October 30.
The SCORE Ensenada office will accept walk-in entries up to 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, Nov. 2.
THE FIELD
With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line, as of today 127 total entries have already been received for the Granddaddy of All Desert Races, with racers representing 24 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and 12 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, and Spain.

56th SCORE BAJA 1000
The world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s massive BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N. There will be live streaming from two days of pre-race contingency and start-to-finish live coverage on the SCORE website and social media channels.
Race week activities will be held Nov. 13-18.
Over 300 vehicles are expected at the start line with racers from nearly 40 U.S. States and as many as 20 countries anticipated. Pro and Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads will be competing in the Granddaddy of All Desert Races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be a point-to-point race of an exhilaratingly exhausting 1310.94 miles starting for the first time in La Paz, Baja California Sur and finishing for the 29th time in Ensenada, Baja California.
La Paz is the Capital of Baja California Sur, located nearly 1000 miles from the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif.
Ensenada, “The Off-Road Racing Capital of the World” is a coastal city on the Bahia de Todos Santos area of the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.
This race is annually the finale of the SCORE World Desert Championship, which has been held exclusively for the past eight years in Baja California.
DOUBLE DIGITS
Several classes in this year’s race already have double-digit entries. At the top is the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division with 22 entries so far (including seven in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old). Created by former SCORE Hall of Fame owner Sal Fish in 1994, SCORE Trophy Truck is the amazing class for high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited, custom trucks.
Also, with double digits so far among 4wheel vehicle classes are Trophy Truck Spec with 19 entries and Class 1/2-1600 with 11 entries.
Among the two-wheel vehicle classes, leading so far with 16 entries is the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders.
AMPUDIA-PAPAS Y BEER
Alan Ampudia, 32, of Ensenada, Mexico, is a major part of the second-generation of Mexican SCORE desert racers from the well-known Ampudia family, who own Papas Y Beer night clubs in Ensenada, Mexico and Rosarito Beach, Mexico.

Ampudia and his younger brother Aaron Ampudia drove to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Alan Ampudia was as high as third in the 2022 SCORE Trophy Truck season points, but a DNF in the SCORE Baja 1000 dropped down to 10th in points for the 2022 season.
Driving solo so far in 2023, Alan Ampudia opened the season with a second-place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE San Felipe 250. He averaged 61.63 miles per hour over the 263.50-mile race course, finishing second overall as well, seven minute, 16 seconds behind the race winner Luke McMillin. In the SCORE Baja 500, Alan Ampudia had a mechanical issue force him out of the race. He came bounced back with a fourth-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400 and is currently 10th in the SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings.
He will have his younger brother Aaron Ampudia, 31, also of Ensenada, back to share the driving time with him in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000.
WRIGHT WAY
Following several seasons as a co-rider on winning Pro motorcycle age group classes, Brandon Wright, 46, Oak Hills, Calif. races in Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) class where he won the season championship in his class and earned the 2022 SCORE Overall Motorcycle title as well with a victory in the SCORE San Felipe 250, second-place finishes in the SCORE Baja 500 and SCORE Baja 400 and a third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 out of 20 starters this year.
As the season class point champion, Wright rides the No. 700x Husqvarna FE501 motorcycle.
After a pre-running accident for the SCORE Baja 1000 caused him to withdraw from the race, he later decided (with approval from his doctor) to re-enter the race and he courageously battled to a podium finish to earn his two crowns.
In this year’s season opener in San Felipe, the Pro Moto Ironman class had a race-record 17 starters and Wright earned a podium finish in third place to start his 2023 campaign. Wright followed that up with a first-place finish in his class in the SCORE Baja 500 to take the lead again in this very special motorcycle class, and kept the lead going into this year’s season finale with a second-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400.
MYERS SISTERS
Another second and third generation SCORE race team, Myers Girls racing returned to SCORE in 2021 after an absence of several years. The famous SoCal racing family is back in a major way with four family members in three family entries, two in SCORE Trophy Truck and one in Class 10. All three are part of the Toyota Escondido TE Motorsports Team.
Dan Myers, 44, Newport Beach, Calif., and his younger brother Andrew Myers, 43 of San Marcos, Calif. are in separate trucks SCORE Trophy Truck and the latest Myers entries are their nieces Britney Myers, 27, and her sister Tamara Myers, 28, of Newport Beach, Calif., who are racing together in Class 10.
The Myers sisters’ father, Steve Myers, is also a racer and is listed as a back-up for his daughters if needed, while his new Toyota SCORE Trophy Truck is being finished.
Unfortunately, the Myers sisters suffered another two DNFs to start this season, but they have the talented assistance from Larry Negrete Jr, 28, San Ysidro, Calif., to help them improve in their Myers Girls Racing No. 1023 TE Motorsports Custom-Honda, 1650cc open-wheel desert race car.
The sisters bounced back with an eighth-place finish in Class 10 in the SCORE Baja 400 and their father Steve Myers is scheduled to drive a section of the SCORE Baja 1000 with his daughters.
MIKE WALSER
Texan Mike Walser, 56, of Comfort, has decided to go all in for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 with a solid three-driver effort to challenge Mexico’s Baja California peninsula from the bottom up and a field of SCORE superstars.
After starting the 2023 campaign with a DNF in San Felipe, Walser re-grouped, sat out the SCORE Baja 500 and came back with a seventh-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400 in his No. 89 AWD Chevy Silverado built by Mason Motorsports.
For the upcoming epic race, splitting the driving with Walser will be budding superstar Christopher Polvoorde, 23, Hemet, Calif., and veteran racer Ray Griffith, 35, Downey, Calif.
In the recent SCORE Baja 400, the trio teamed up in two SCORE Trophy Trucks, finishing seventh and 10th overall and in class.
Walser enters the race currently 23rd in the season points, but everything starts over for the mission of running the SCORE Baja 1000.
CULLEN SON/FATHER
Desert racing has always been about family and Mason Cullen and his father Matt Cullen are another of the great examples of that fact.
Both from Long Beach, Calif., Mason Cullen, 24, and his father Matt Cullen, 54, split the driving in Trophy Truck Spec in their No. 207 Geiser-Chevy.
Both have several class wins in different classes and in 2019, Mason Cullen won Class 1 season point championship.
Together this season, Mason Cullen and his father Matt Cullen are currently fifth in the Trophy Truck Spec season point standings, out of 54 total starters following their 2023 class finishes of 18th, sixth and seventh, in the first three races.
TRIO OF LEGENDS…
POST, E. HERBST, RAGLAND
What do you get when you put a trio of SCORE Trophy Truck legends together with a combined 31 career SCORE Trophy Truck race victories and a combined age of 207 years young, what tri-fecta would you come up with for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000.
How about this unbelievable combination of driver of record Mark Post, 65, Las Vegas and additional drivers Ed Herbst, 62, Las Vegas and Larry Ragland, 80, Cave Creek, Ariz., who will be racing in the SCORE TT Legend class for drivers over 50 years old.
Post will oversee his special team in his No. 3L Riviera Racing Ford F-150 as they team together for the first time in their storied careers.
In the SCORE Baja 1000, Ragland leads the gregarious group with five overall wins while Post has one overall and Herbst has one class win. Post won the 40th SCORE Baja 1000 race in 2007 when it ran from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas.
GARY MAGNESS
Denver’s SCORE veteran racer Gary Magness returns as a Driver of Record in this year’s SCORE Baja 100.
Driving for his Mango Racing in a Herbst/Smith Fab-built race truck, Gary Magness, 69, a film producer and international businessman, will be behind the wheel of the No. 45 Ford Raptor in SCORE Trophy Truck.
Gary Magness finished 16th out of 39 starters in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 and 11th out of 33 starters in this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
In last year’s SCORE Baja 1000, Gary Magness finished 13th out of 36 starters in SCORE Trophy Truck.
Normally also entered for Mango Racing is Gary’s daughter Chelsea Magness in Trophy Truck Spec, but she has not entered as of today.
CLAY LAWRENCE
Another of the many family entries in the SCORE Baja 500 is the Lawrence family of Banning, Calif. that features two generations of racers, a nephew, and his uncle racing in two separate classes in Lawrence Equipment race trucks.
In La Paz the Lawrence family has one entry in SCORE Trophy Truck and one in SCORE TT Legend.
Both with top finishes and championships, Mikey Lawrence, 35, is the driver of record in the No. 85 GMC truck built by Herbst-Smith Fab in SCORE Trophy Truck while his uncle Clay Lawrence, 61, is the driver of record in the No. 85L GMC truck also built by Herbst-Smith Fab in SCORE TT Legend.
A former SCORE class point champion (Class 10 in 2008, 2009, 2012), Mikey Lawrence opened the 2023 campaign with a 19th place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck while his uncle Clay Lawrence finished on the podium in second place in SCORE TT Legend. In this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Mikey finished 15th and Clay finished on the podium in third place in their respective classes.
Mikey Lawrence finished the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship in third place in SCORE Trophy Truck points while Clay Lawrence ended up second in SCORE TT Legend points.
In the SCORE Baja 1000 last year, Mikey Lawrence finished fifth and Clay Lawrence finished second in SCORE TT Legend.
EL NOVATO NO MAS
From San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, strongman Faelly Lopez was voted the 2022 SCORE Rookie of the Year in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship where he was competing in just the first full season of the Pro Quad Ironman class for solo riders.
Lopez, 40, started 2022 by winning his class in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 on his No. 83a Honda TRX450R. The ‘Puerto Rican Force’ covered the 277.00-mile race course in 9:47:10.
After not being able to finish his first SCORE race at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 that went down the peninsula from Ensenada to La Paz, Lopez recovered and won SCORE’s newest class in 2022 in the first three 2022 SCORE races and eventually won SCORE Pro Quad Ironman season point championship.
Lopez joined previous winners of the SCORE top rookie award like Frank Vessels (1974), Jimmie Johnson (1995), Ricky Johnson (1993), Robby Gordon (1987), Doug Fortin Jr (1988), Bekki Freeman-Wik (1998), Andy McMillin (2004), Brian Wilson (2009), Luke McMillin (2010), Bryce Menzies (2011), Tony Gera (2014), Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2015), Chad Broughton (2016), Broc Dickerson (2017), A.J. Jones (2019) and Cayden MacCachren (2021).
Lopez started the 2023 season by winning all three races in his Pro Quad Ironman class for the second straight year each.
RYAN LIEBELT & CO.
Ryan Liebelt continues to make lasting impressions in the SCORE motorcycle racing world as not only a rider, but also as a builder of class-winning motorcycles.
From Reedley, Calif., Liebelt, 43, had 13 motorcycle age-group class wins from 2017 through 2022 including eight straight in two undefeated seasons that earned him the Pro Moto 40 season point title in both 2021 and 2022.
In the SCORE Baja 1000, he has two class wins, 2019 in Pro Moto 30 and 2021 in Pro Moto 40.
After starting the 2023 season with a DNF in the Pro Moto Unlimited class, Liebelt did not race the SCORE Baja 500 and his team finished second in the SCORE Baja 400 in Pro Moto 40.
He will be leading another talented team on the No. 400x Yamaha WR450F that he built. His co-riders for this year’s race are Jason Trubey, 48, Henderson, Nev., Travis Flateau, 49, Corona, Calif., and Steve Tichenor, 48, Reno, Nev.
BAJA CHALLENGE
Looking to earn a four-peat as the Baja Challenge class season point champion, Edward Muncey is once again driver of record in his No. BC4 Subaru-powered BTC (Baja Touring Car) open-wheel desert race car.
With a variety of additional drivers over the years, including several family members and several retired military personnel, Muncey, 52, San Diego, will have his son Dominic Muncey, 20, as his second driver and his other son Michael, Muncey, 19, as his third driver in the SCORE Baja 1000.
His brother and long-time second driver Roger Norman, 59, San Diego, has decided to run a solo season in the Pro UTV Open class in his No. 1888 Norman Motorsports Polaris Pro R race vehicle. Norman has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, both in 2008.
Last season, Muncey opened with a second-place in class in San Felipe and followed that podium finish by winning his Baja Challenge class in the next two races and finished second in the SCORE Baja 1000 to earn his third consecutive class season point title.
Muncey spent 11 years as the Senior Vice-President, Technology, for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and now is the principal of Stream Enforcement, LLC in Las Vegas.
In the 2023 season opener, Muncey finished second in the Baja Challenge class, followed by a first place in the SCORE Baja 500 and a DNF in the SCORE Baja 400 as he continues to rehab following shoulder surgery.
STARTING GRID-SCORE BAJA 1000
The results of the SCORE Baja 400 determined the start order within each class for November’s iconic season-ending BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N.
A special drawing for the remaining starting positions within each class will be held for all the additional entries and the results posted on the SCORE website at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, Nov. 3. All entries received after that date will receive the next available spot within their respective classes.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000 will open in La Paz at 8 a.m. MT on Saturday, Oct. 21.
MAIN COURSE
The race features a course, fully plotted, and soon to marked over the few several weeks by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva, and Assistant Race Director Rodolfo Fernandez, of 1,310.94 miles of rugged Baja California terrain.
The challenging, pre-dominantly up-hill race course will be another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky, and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 4,000 feet. The course will be another crown jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California.
The 1310.94-mile race course, the longest ever between La Paz and Ensenada for the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N, runs for the first time from La Paz to Ensenada, up Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula.
The iconic race will start for the first time on the picturesque El Malecon in La Paz along the Sea of Cortez and finish on Boulevard Costero, adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
The incredibly beautiful, and ridiculously rugged race course will have 30 Speed Zones, 308 Virtual Check Points, three physical, full-stop Check Points, and feature nine BFGoodrich Tires Pits.
Physical Check Point No. 1 will be a race mile 233.88 (Valle de Santo Domingo), CP 2 will be at RM 599.34 (South of Vizcaino) and CP3 will be at RM 922.25 (South of Catavina).
After leaving El Malecon in La Paz, the course begins its windy road North from the Mexican State of Baja California Sur to the Mexican State of Baja California. The race course will pass near several of the legendary Spanish Missions on its way North.
From RM 50 across Arroyo Seco, the course will run adjacent to the Pacific Ocean for the first time up to RM 220.
At RM 277.46 the course will pass by Mission de San Javier on top of the Sierra de La Giganta and at RM 300.05 for the first time in SCORE history, the race course go through El Malecon in Loreto, again by the Sea of Cortez.
At RM 632.75, the course crosses from Baja California Sur into Baja California for the final half of the race.
At RM 821.35, the course is near the Pacific Ocean for the final time near Bahia Blanco.
While the race course includes numerous Baja washes, at race-mile 1014.24, the course will begin a treacherous trek through six of the gloriously majestic washes around San Felipe: Matomi, Azufre, Boulder Canyon, Huatamote, Chanate, and Amarillas.
At RM 1200.75, the course passes Valle de Trinidad and up the infamous Goat Trail, behind Santa Catarina (RM 1226.36) by Rancho El Mezcal to Ojos Negros (RM 1277.04) and to the finish line in Ensenada.
All the Sportsman classes along with Class 11 and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of 1197.04 miles.

GREEN FLAG
It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts with the green flag dropping on Thursday (Nov. 16). Motorcycles and Quads will start at 1 a.m. MT, Cars, Trucks, and UTVs will start at 9 a.m. MT.
While the fastest vehicles in the 1310.94-mile race are expected to finish in about 23 hours, the elapsed-time race will have a 50-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
A HAPPENING…
Two days of the colorful pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway, Contingency and Tech inspection will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 14-15) along the captivating El Malecon along the Sea of Cortez in La Paz.
Popular Rat Sult will once again serve as host of the SCORE Live streaming. Assisting Sult will once again be veteran voice Dave Arnold.
Contingency and the race itself will be streamed live, airing via the internet on the SCORE website and SCORE social media channels. Included in the exclusive race coverage, along with vehicle tracking, will be live drone and in-car camera footage from various locations around the race course. There will also be hosts in the SCORE Studio bringing live updates during the race.
CITY EXPRESS…
The City Express Hotel on the Northeast end of El Malecon in La Paz, will host racer registration and media registration on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (Nov. 13-15).
On Monday (Nov. 13), racer registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST. On Tuesday (Nov. 14) it will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST, and on Wednesday (Nov. 15) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST.
SCORE Media Registration will be held at the City Express on Monday (Nov. 13) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. MST and from 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 14-15) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT.
The race will start along the picturesque El Malecon in La Paz.

US$20,000 PRO MOTO UNLTD PURSE
Through the coordination and efforts of SCORE Motorcycle liaison, Andy Kirker, a former SCORE motorcycle racer, four companies have combined to put up a special $20,000 bonus purse exclusively for the Pro Moto Unlimited Class, the fastest class on two wheels.
The four companies posting this unprecedented purse for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 are: Anube, from Spain, Taco Moto Company from Las Vegas, Baja Bound of Mexico, and AHM Factory Services of Yorba Linda, Calif.
This unique payout will be for first through fifth place on the official results: first-$10,000, second-$5,000, third-$3,000, fourth-$1,500 and fifth-$500.
GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR GOLDEN YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who turned 84 in May of this year, is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
