29 'Gladiators of the Desert' ready for SCORE Baja 1000

ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, eight of the top 10 finishers from last year including the reigning season point champion and individual race winner, 29 SCORE Trophy Trucks, aka ‘Gladiators of the Desert,’ are poised, prepped, and revved to roar through the magnificent Mexican peninsula next week. These spectacular, high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks, will lead the field of more than 325 expected starters into next week’s iconic BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N, the season finale of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.

LA GRAN CARRERA

The Granddaddy of All Desert Races, the SCORE Baja 1000 is at the pinnacle of motorsports as the most iconic, oldest, prestigious, toughest, and longest, continuously held desert race in the world.

This year, starting for the first time in La Paz, Baja California Sur Mexico, and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, race-week festivities and the race itself will be held Nov. 13-18.

This year’s race, the 25th Peninsula run in race history, will be a point-to-point race of 1310.94 miles UP Baja California’s majestically masterful, poignantly picturesque peninsula.

FAB FIELD

Included in the impressive field of SCORE Trophy Trucks are a litany of the greatest desert racers in the world. Entries include 10 racers who have combined to win 17 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championships in the 30-year history of the marquee racing division in the sport of desert racing.

There are also 24 drivers entered who have combined to win 116 of the 146 All-Time SCORE Trophy Truck races.

Because of the distance and degree of difficulty in this year’s race course, many entries have three champion racers to share the driving duties.

UNITED NATIONS

With over 325 entries anticipated at the start line, as of today 322 total entries have been received to date for the Granddaddy of All Desert Races, with racers representing 33 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and 17 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Spain, and Venezuela.

DIRT FAX

The world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s massive BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N. There will be live streaming from two days of pre-race contingency and start-to-finish live coverage on the SCORE website and social media channels.

Race week activities will be held Nov. 13-18.

Over 300 vehicles are expected at the start line with racers from nearly 40 U.S. States and as many as 20 countries anticipated. Pro and Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads will be competing in the Granddaddy of All Desert Races.

This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be a point-to-point race of an exhilaratingly exhausting 1310.94 miles starting for the first time in La Paz, Baja California Sur and finishing for the 29th time in Ensenada, Baja California.

La Paz is the Capital of Baja California Sur, located nearly 1000 miles from the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif.

Ensenada, “The Off-Road Racing Capital of the World” is a coastal city in the Bahia de Todos Santos area of the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.

This race is annually the finale of the SCORE World Desert Championship, which has been held exclusively for the past eight years in Baja California.

SCORE TROPHY TRUCK ANNIVERSARY

Celebrating its 30th anniversary season, SCORE Trophy Truck, developed and launched by former SCORE owner Sal Fish in 1994, is the marquee racing division in the sport—for high-tech, 1000 horsepower unlimited custom trucks and SCORE TT Legend, which debuted in 2017, is for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers at least 50 years old.

‘THE LUKE’—QUEST FOR FOUR

Looking back to 2022, in a race full of ‘SCORE Super Teams’ that turned into a true ‘survival’ test, San Diego’s youthful super star The Luke McMillin and the admired G.O.A.T. in desert racing, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren teamed to rise above the rest in a field of 276 starters to win the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck title in the legendary BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 1000.

Starting second physically on the road in the elapsed time race and splitting the driving in McMillin’s Big Blue M racing machine all-wheel drive 4 Wheel Parts/BFGoodrich Tires No. 83 Chevy 1500, the dynamic duo patiently worked their way to the front of the pack and finished the beautifully bodacious 828.25-mile race around the Northern Part of Mexico’s majestic Baja peninsula in a sterling penalty-free time of 16 hours, 37 minutes, and 46 seconds with an average speed of 49.81 miles per hour.

After their victory together in 2021 and Luke McMillin’s overall win with Larry Roeseler in 2020, ‘The Luke’ is on rarified ground as he attempts to become the first racer to win four-consecutive overalls in the Granddaddy of all Desert Races. The other two drivers with three straight victories are Larry Ragland (1995, 1996, 1997) and MacCachren (2014, 2015, 2016).

SECOND & THIRD—2022

Following the ‘The Luke’/G.O.A.T. talented tandem onto the podium were Luke’s older brother Dan McMillin and ageless warrior Larry Roeseler.

Dan McMillin, 35, also of San Diego and Josh Daniel, 48, Bonsall, Calif., split the driving in the No. 23 McMillin Racing AWD Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports in 16:59:40 (48.74mph).

Completing the podium was Larry ‘Mr. Baja’ Roeseler, 66, Boulevard, Calif., who drove solo for the second straight year, covering the course in 17:38:44 (46.92mph) in his No. 43 Baja Jerky Toyota Turndra, built by ID Designs. Roeseler has a SCORE-record 18 overall wins in the SCORE Baja 1000, including 14 on motorcycles, two in Class 1 cars and two in SCORE Trophy Truck.

Both back for this year’s race leading three-driver SCORE Trophy Truck teams are last year’s second and third-place podium finishers—Luke McMillin’s older brother Dan McMillin and Larry Roeseler.

Dan McMillin has added former NASCAR racer Justin Lofton to join him and Daniel while Roeseler has teamed with Australian Superstars Toby Price and Paul Weel in Weel’s AWD No. 43 Baja Jerky Chevy Silverado.

SCORE TROPHY TRUCK CHAMPS

Roaring through the desert terrain with the grace, beauty and power of the Bolshoi Ballet and the speed of a runaway locomotive, a total of 17 of the last 19 SCORE Trophy Truck SCORE Baja 1000 race winners are entered in this year’s race, including the last eight straight. And 24 racers are entered in this race who have combined to earn 116 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins (out of 148 total races).

Also entered are 10 racers who have combined for 17 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championships in the first 29 years of the marquee SCORE racing division.

Leading the way among the former SCORE Trophy Truck season point champs are Ed Herbst and his brother Tim Herbst with four titles each (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003), four-time champion Rob MacCachren (1994, 2007, 2018, 2021) and three-time consecutive titles in Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2015, 2016, 2017).

Individually, Rob MacCachren leads with the most career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins with 20, followed by other race entries Ed and Tim Herbst (11 each), Andy McMillin (11), Larry Ragland (11), Bryce Menzies (10), Mark Post (7), Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr (6), Larry Roeseler (5), Luke McMillin (5), Ryan Arciero (4), Curt LeDuc (4), Gus Vildosola Sr (3), Jesse Jones (2), Juan C. Lopez (2), Roger Norman (2), Cameron Steele (2), and entered with one each career SCORE Trophy Truck race win are Alan Ampudia, Aaron Ampudia, Josh Daniel, Pat Dean, Rick D. Johnson, Eduardo Laguna, and Dan McMillin.

MENZIES MOJO

Entering this year’s race as one of the top three favorites is clearly Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies, 36, who is leading the SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings with two race wins and 10 overall race wins in his SCORE career. Menzies has put together another stellar super-team for this year’s race.

San Diego’s Andy McMillin, 36. son of former SCORE champion Scott McMillin and grandson of the late Corky McMillin, will be the second driver for Menzies in the No. 7 Menzies Motorsports AWD Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports. Andy McMillin won the 2019 SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion.

The third super-driver for the No. 7 for this race is Mexico superstar Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr, 41, of Mexicali. ‘Tavo’ is always a force to be reckoned with and has six career SCORE Trophy Truck race victories.

Menzies won the SCORE Trophy Truck crown in 2011 when he was also selected the 2011 SCORE Rookie of the Year, and he also won this year’s SCORE Baja 400 for the third straight season and the SCORE Baja 400 for the fifth time.

DOUBLE DIGITS

Several classes in this year’s race have double-digit entries. At the top is the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division with 29 entries (including eight in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old). Created by former SCORE Hall of Fame owner Sal Fish in 1994, SCORE Trophy Truck is the amazing class for high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited, custom trucks.

Also, with double digits so far among 4-wheel vehicle classes are Trophy Truck Spec with 36 entries, Class 1/2-1600 with 20 entries, Class 10 with 15, Pro UTV Open with 15, Pro UTV FI with 18, Pro UTV Stock with 16, and Class 1 with 10.

Among the motorcycle and quad classes, leading so far with a class race-record 26 entries is the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, Pro Moto Limited with 11, and Sportsman Quad with 11.

PRE-RUNNING

Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 1310.94-mile race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000 continues. Pre-running is open from the start to race-mile 1277.04. Inbound only pre-running was allowed from rm1277.04 to rm1310.94 and Oct. 28 and Oct. 29.

VILDOSOLA SR

Joining his son at the starting line will be Gus Vildosola Sr, Mexicali, who is undefeated with three race wins this year in the SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old in his AWD No. 1L Mexicana Logistics Ford Raptor, built by Mason Motorsports. There are eight entries in his class for this race.

Vildosola Sr has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins. Vildosola Sr will be driver of record in this race in his Mexicana Logistics AWD No. 21L Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.

After winning the class championship with four consecutive wins in 2022, splitting the driving with him again this season has been AMA Hall of Famer Ricky Johnson, 58, El Cajon, Calif. The third driver for this race is Mike Coleman, San Diego.

In 2010 Vildosola Sr teamed with his son as the son/father team became the first Mexican nationals to capture the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory in the iconic SCORE Baja 1000 peninsula race from Ensenada to La Paz.

MAS POSSIBLE

Nothing is for certain in SCORE Baja racing especially when 29 thoroughbreds glide their way over the unforgiving terrain of the Baja California peninsula.

While 24 of the 29 entries in the behemoth class have tasted victory in the premier desert racing class, several other contenders will be in contention for coveted spots on the podium.

Youth may be served with the likes of 18-year-old Jax Redline, San Antonio, Texas (third driver for Mexico brothers Alan Ampudia and Aaron Ampudia), and Ethan Ebert, 17, Marana, making his class debut in a new Honda Ridgeline in the starting grid.

Then there are cagey veterans like Dan Myers, Newport Beach, Calif., his younger brother Andrew Myers, San Marcos, Calif., Sam Baldi, Beaumont, Calif., the team of Kevin Thompson, New Braunfels/Harley Letner, Corona, Calif., and the team of Gary Magness and his daughter Chelsea Magness, both of Denver.

Also in the hunt will be three-driver team of Dallas Lutrell, Las Vegas/Cody Swanty, Kingman, Ariz./Billy Goerke, Las Vegas.

Easy to see then, anything is possible when these SCORE ‘Gladiators of the Desert’ start their engines.

BAJA RUTA MUY ESPECIAL!

The race features a course, fully plotted, and marked by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva, and Assistant Race Director Rodolfo Fernandez, of 1,310.94 miles of rugged Baja California terrain.

The challenging, predominantly up-hill rugged race course is another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky, and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 4,000 feet. The course is another crown jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California.

The 1310.94-mile race course, the longest ever between La Paz and Ensenada for the BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N, runs for the first time from La Paz to Ensenada, UP Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula.

The iconic race will start for the first time on the picturesque El Malecon in La Paz along the Sea of Cortez and finish on Boulevard Costero, adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

The incredibly beautiful, and ridiculously rugged race course has 31 Speed Zones for a total of 201.81 miles, 324 total Virtual Check Points, three physical, full-stop Check Points, and feature nine BFGoodrich Tires Pits.

Physical Check Point No. 1 is at race mile 233.88 (Valle de Santo Domingo), CP 2 is at RM 599.34 (South of Vizcaino) and CP3 is at RM 922.25 (South of Catavina).

After leaving El Malecon in La Paz, the course begins its windy road North from the Mexican State of Baja California Sur to the Mexican State of Baja California. The race course passes near several of the legendary Spanish Missions on its way North.

From RM 50 across Arroyo Seco, the course runs adjacent to the Pacific Ocean for the first time up to RM 220.

At RM 277.46 the course passes by Mission de San Javier on top of the Sierra de La Giganta and at RM 300.05 for the first time in SCORE history, the race course goes through El Malecon in Loreto, again by the Sea of Cortez.

At RM 632.75, the course crosses from Baja California Sur into Baja California for the final half of the race.

At RM 821.35, the course is near the Pacific Ocean for the final time near Bahia Blanco.

While the race course includes numerous Baja washes, at race-mile 1014.24, the course will begin a treacherous trek through six of the gloriously majestic washes around San Felipe: Matomi, Azufre, Boulder Canyon, Huatamote, Chanate, and Amarillas.

At RM 1200.75, the course passes Valle de Trinidad and up the infamous Goat Trail, behind Santa Catarina (RM 1226.36) by Rancho El Mezcal to Ojos Negros (RM 1277.04) and to the finish line in Ensenada.

For safety reasons, all the Sportsman classes along with Class 11 and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of 1197.04 miles.

GREEN FLAG

It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts with the green flag dropping on Thursday (Nov. 16). Motorcycles and Quads will start at 1 a.m. MT, Cars, Trucks, and UTVs will start at 9 a.m. MT.

While the fastest vehicles in the 1310.94-mile race are expected to finish in about 23 hours, the elapsed-time race will have a 50-hour time limit to become an official finisher.

A HAPPENING…

Two days of the colorful pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway, Contingency and Tech inspection will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 14-15) along the captivating El Malecon along the Sea of Cortez in La Paz.

SCORE LIVE

From the new state-of-the art SCORE Studio in El Cajon, Calif., SCORE LIVE with host Brandon Johnson, will provide exclusive race coverage, along with vehicle tracking, live drone, and in-car camera footage from various locations around the race course.

Legendary SCORE racers will be working with Johnson during the race-days show.

Popular Rat Sult, in his eighth season with SCORE, will be the host announcer on the SCORE ramp during contingency and the race start and finish. Assisting Sult will be veteran voice Dave Arnold, and Mexico’s Gabriel Garcia, who will be assisting with finish-line interviews.

CITY EXPRESS…

The City Express Hotel on the Northeast end of El Malecon in La Paz, will host racer registration and media registration on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (Nov. 13-15).

On Monday (Nov. 13), racer registration will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST. On Tuesday (Nov. 14) it will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST, and on Wednesday (Nov. 15) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST.

SCORE Media Registration will be held at the City Express on Monday (Nov. 13) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. MST and from 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday (Nov. 14-15) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST.

The race will start along the picturesque El Malecon in La Paz.

Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.

Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who turned 84 in May of this year, is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
