Building on a legacy of Baja 1000 excellence, this 42-year-old Canadian desert racing veteran from Grindrod, BC continues to prove his mettle against the world's toughest off-road competition. Tyler Backus captured the SCORE Baja 1000 class championship in Pro UTV Normally Aspirated in 2018, conquering the legendary peninsula race that has claimed countless competitors over its storied history.
His mastery of the brutal Baja terrain was further demonstrated with a podium finish at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000, where he secured second place in class during one of the most demanding editions of the world's premier desert race. These achievements place him among an elite group of international competitors who have consistently finished the grueling 1000-mile odyssey through Mexico's unforgiving Baja Peninsula.
Known for his strategic approach and mechanical sympathy—crucial traits in a sport where less than half the field typically sees the checkered flag—Backus has earned respect throughout the SCORE racing community. His ability to navigate the technical challenges and equipment failures that routinely end championship dreams has established him as one of Canada's most accomplished desert racers in modern SCORE competition.
The newest SCORE UTV class, Pro UTV Open had Justin Elenburg in the No. 1870 Can-Am X3 dominate the class by winning every race this season. He continued to dominate at the 54th SCORE Baja 1000, putting an amazing effort with co-drivers Mike York, and Ernesto Taylor, to finish first again in class. Read More
