Jon Walker carved his name into SCORE desert racing history with his stunning 2017 SCORE Baja 1000 Class 1 championship victory, conquering the grueling 1,134-mile peninsula run from Ensenada to La Paz. Based in Guam, Walker brought an international presence to the desert racing scene, proving that championship-caliber competition comes from across the globe.
His breakthrough performance in the legendary 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 showcased true grit and determination. Despite facing significant mechanical challenges including flat tires and rear brake failure, Walker and his co-drivers Joe Black, Jim Reos, and Joey Black persevered through the punishing Baja terrain. Their resilience paid off as they crossed the finish line in 23 hours, 55 minutes, and 52 seconds, averaging 47.40 mph in their #189 Kreger-Chevy.
The victory was particularly impressive given the record 405-competitor field that year, creating unprecedented traffic and dust conditions. Walker's triumph over class points leader Brad Wilson demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure when it mattered most. His success represents the global appeal of SCORE desert racing, bringing championship-level competition from the Pacific to the deserts of Baja California.
