Andy DeVercelly - Class 1/2-1600

Andy DeVercelly

El Cajon, CA - #1656

Biography

A true pioneer of SCORE desert racing, this El Cajon veteran has left an indelible mark on off-road motorsports spanning over five decades. His legendary career began in the earliest days of Baja racing, capturing multiple victories in the inaugural SCORE Baja 1000 events from 1967-1969, establishing himself as one of the sport's founding champions alongside racing icons like Malcolm Smith and Rod Hall.

His dominance in the modified nonproduction buggy class during those formative years helped define what would become modern desert racing. The 1973 SCORE Baja 1000 saw him claim victory in Class 2, while his consistent performance in the grueling Class 10 division throughout the 1970s culminated in the 1974 SCORE Baja 500 championship, sharing the victory with co-driver Jerry Conway.

Beyond his driving achievements, he represents the golden era of SCORE racing when the sport was raw, unforgiving, and purely about man versus machine against the brutal Baja Peninsula. His multiple class victories across different vehicle categories demonstrate the versatility and skill that separated champions from competitors in desert racing's most challenging decades. At 43, he continues to embody the spirit of SCORE racing from his Southern California base.
