ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’, this year, SoCal’s champion desert racer Jason McNeil won both the 2023 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck Spec point championship following the recent BFGoodrich Tires 56th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by K&N. It is McNeil’s first SCORE Overall title and second in the massive Trophy Truck Spec class.

Driving solo again this season for the first three races, McNeil was second in class in Round 1 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. His Trophy Truck Spec class had a SCORE-record 43 starters in his class in San Felipe in April. He topped that finish by winning his class over a race-high 31 starters in Ensenada in the SCORE Baja 500 in early June and then backed it up by winning his class again over a race-high 37 starters in the SCORE Baja 400 in September. He finished the season by overcoming mechanical issues to finish 18th out of 34 starters in the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000 in November to earn his championship.

At the end of the 50th season of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, a total of 12 classes have at least one racer in the top 31 overall points after the four races held over Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula. Three races were held in the Northern part of the peninsula and the season culminated with an epic race up the peninsula from La Paz, Baja California Sur to Ensenada, Baja California.

POINT REGS

SCORE point regulations have all four races counting for final points toward season point championships. Racers are allowed one substitute driver/rider for the season but the driver/rider of record must either start or finish the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.

SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race depending on the distance of the race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within each class.

McNEIL MOVIN’ ALL THE WAY UP

Jason McNeil moved up to lead the points in Trophy Truck Spec and also was the SCORE Overall point champion and the SCORE Overall Truck Champion of the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.

McNeil, 45, of El Cajon, Calif., drives the No. 234 TSCO-Chevy in the class with the largest number of entries this season. He recorded a total of 551 points during the four-race season.

Part of an avid desert racing family with several relatives racing as well, McNeil won the Trophy Truck Spec season point championship in 2021.

In the 2023 season-finale, Elijah Kiger started and drove to race mile 350, Justin Davis drove from race mile 350 to race mile 760. Jason McNeil drove from race mile 760 to the finish. McNeil commented at the finish line, “The truck is still in one piece and we could have had a great run. Unfortunately, Elijah had to replace the driver’s side of the suspension and that kept us down for about five hours. Justin was doing a great job, but he had to stop to deal with an issue as well and that was a bummer. The mishap at the beginning made it impossible for us to get a top finish, but we still won the points championship and that’s what matters. The Catavina loop was insane with the terrain and the rain. I’ve never driven in anything like that. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.”

MENZIES: SCORE TROPHY TRUCK POINT CHAMPION

After a third-place finish in the season opener in San Felipe, Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies roared to the overall victories in the SCORE Baja 500, the SCORE Baja 400, and the SCORE Baja 1000 to keep a slim margin over runner-up Luke McMillin (who finished third in overall points in his No. 1 Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports) in the SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings. And Menzies also finished second in the 2023 SCORE overall point standings. He drove his AWD No. 7 Menzies Motorsports Ford Raptor, also built by Mason Motorsports

For the SCORE Baja 1000, Menzies teamed with Andy McMillin and Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola Jr for his first victory in that iconic race. He became the just the 10th racer in SCORE history to win the SCORE Baja Triple Crown Award given to racers who have won the overall victory in the three traditional SCORE Baja races—the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500, and the SCORE Baja 1000.

For Menzies, 35, he now has 11 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, putting him into a tie for third all-time behind Rob MacCachren (20 career wins) and Andy McMillin (12).

Menzies finished with 538 season points. It is his second career SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship, having also won it in 2011 when he was also voted the 2011 SCORE Rookie of the Year.

TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS

Behind McNeil, Menzies, and Luke McMillin in three of the top five spots in the overall point standings, fourth were EJ Herbst, Las Vegas, who was second in Trophy Truck Spec and fifth was Travis Williams, Avondale, Ariz., who finished in third place in the Trophy Truck Spec class in 2023.

Herbst is a third-generation member of the legendary Terrible Herbst Motorsports team of Las Vegas and drove the No. 263 Herbst/Smith-Chevy while Williams completed his first full season of SCORE racing in his No. 277 Geiser-Chevy.

VILDOSOLA SR—SCORE TT LEGEND

Vildosola Sr, 70, Mexicali, won his class title for the third time, having won the SCORE TT Legend season point championship in 2018 with Scott Bailey as a second driver and last year with Ricky Johnson.

He won all four 2022 races and again won all four in 2023 with help from legendary Hall of Fame racer Ricky Johnson, 58, El Cajon, Calif. who drove the first half of each race in the Vildosola Racing No. 1L AWD Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.
