35 ‘Monsters of the Desert’--SCORE Trophy Trucks

     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—With famous desert racing names like MacCachren, Herbst, Gordon, McMillin, Baldwin, Roeseler, Vildosola, Menzies, Lopez, Steele and Arciero at the forefront, 35 SCORE Trophy Trucks are revved to roar next Saturday to lead the field from around the world into Baja California, Mexico to launch the Inaugural Lucerna SCORE Baja 400.
Celebrating its 46th year as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the newest SCORE Baja race will be held this coming Wednesday through Sunday in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
Round 3 of the four-race 2019 SCORE World Desert Championship has received entries from all across the United States and around the world for the internationally-televised desert race in Mexico’s Baja California. The race and pre-race festivities will be held Wednesday through Sunday in and around the heart of Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego.
Nearly 200 vehicles, racing in classes for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads, are expected at the start line for this history-making, first-time SCORE race with racers from nearly 25 U.S. States and 10 countries anticipated. Long-time SCORE major sponsor BFGoodrich Tires has posted a US$5,000 contingency bonus for the race winner to help commemorate the start of this newest race on the SCORE schedule.
TOP GUNS
To say that the SCORE Trophy Truck ‘Monsters of the Desert’ field is loaded is clearly an understatement.
A total of 13 racers who have combined to win 81 of the 130 all-time SCORE races that have included the marquee racing division for high-tech, 950-horsepower unlimited custom trucks are entered in this first-time SCORE event.
Between them, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren has 17 all-time SCORE Trophy Truck race wins to top the list followed by Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst (11), Robby Gordon, Charlotte , N.C. (11), Andy McMillin, San Diego (11), Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin (6), Mexico’s Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola (6), Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies (5), Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif. (3), Larry Roeseler, Imperial, Calif. (3), Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2) and Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif. (2). With one SCORE Trophy Truck race win each are Dale Dondel, Murrieta, Calif. and Rick D. Johnson, Barstow, Calif. Johnson is racing in the SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck racers over 50.
Of that group of illustrious drivers are six racers who have combined to win 17 of the 25 all-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point championships.
Season champs entered in this race are Tim Herbst with four season SCORE Trophy Truck crowns with his older brother Ed Herbst (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003), Baldwin who also has four season titles (2006, 2008, 2012, 2013), Lopez (2015, 2016 and 2017) and McCachren (1994, 2007, 2018) each have three championships and Gordon who has two (1996, 2009).
GREEN FLAG
The Inaugural Lucerna SCORE Baja 400 is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 6:20 a.m. (PDT) and approximately 10 a.m. (PDT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in around eight hours, all vehicles will have a 16-hour time limit to become official finishers in the race.
LATEST ENTRY TOTAL
Entering late, on-site racer registration this coming Wednesday through Friday, 173 official entries to date includes racers from 24 U.S. States, host country Mexico, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Peru and Spain, SCORE Trophy Truck leads the way with 35 entries (including six in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old. Besides the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck, other classes with double-figure entries so far are Trophy Truck Spec with 25, Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) with 17, Class 10 with 12 and the unlimited Class 1 with 10.
Entries from the USA include racers from Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.
A HAPPENING…
Chassis inspections will be held on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT as well as pre-tech/Stella bracket check and installation on Playa Hermosa south of the city on Highway 1.
On Friday evening will be the Monster Energy Papas Y Beer street party on Avenida Ruiz in downtown Ensenada from 6 p.m. to 12 midnight.
Friday will see the colorful pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and contingency festival in the start finish line area in Ensenada. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. contingency row will be held. Tech inspection will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the end of the manufacturer’s row.
During the race on Saturday until the course closes on Sunday morning, the start/finish line compound will include the massive SCOREvision LED screens broadcasting race festivities and start and finish line interviews.
All of the week’s festivities will be aired both live and same-day including the race, airing via the internet on the SCORE website. Popular Rat Sult and veteran Dave Arnold will once again serve as hosts of the SCORE Live streaming.
AT THE RIVIERA…
The historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, in the heart of Ensenada, will again be the site of many of the activities surrounding the Inaugural Lucerna SCORE Baja 400. Racer registration and media registration will both be held in the Red Room on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Racer registration (including late, on-site entry registration) will be held on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. PDT along with 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PDT on both Thursday and Friday. No new entries will be accepted after 3 p.m. on either day.
Media registration the Red Room will be held on Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. PDT and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT on both Thursday and Friday.
The SCORE Media Center will be in the Red Room during the race with internet access and live race updates, vehicle tracking displays including unofficial elapsed times.
On Friday at the Torre Lucerna Hotel in Ensenada will be pre-race media conference at 11:30 a.m. PDT as well as the mandatory pre-race racer’s meeting at 7 p.m. PDT. The post-race awards celebration will also be at the Torre Lucerna Hotel at noon PDT on Sunday.
The start/finish line for the race will be in front of the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Blvd. Costero.
HONOR ROLL
Created by then SCORE owner Sal Fish in 1994, SCORE Trophy Truck is the marquee racing division in the sport. It features high-tech, 950-horsepower unlimited custom trucks.
Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer MacCachren, 54, is the defending SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion and he pilots the No. 11 Ford F-150 (Geiser-built).
Still considered a ‘youngster’ because of his age and looks, Andy McMillin, 32, a third generation desert racer from San Diego’s iconic McMillin racing family, won the first two races of this year to lead the 2019 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck points. In this week’s inaugural race he will debut his new Mason-built All-wheel drive No. 31 Chevy Silverado. He now has 11 career all-time SCORE Trophy Truck race wins which ties him for second all-time in class history.
Andy McMillin and his father Scott are two of just nine racers who are winners of the SCORE Triple Crown of Baja having won the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000. Andy McMillin won three of his SCORE Trophy Truck races with his father Scott, two with MacCachren and one with Gordon. The Gordon win was his first in SCORE Trophy Truck back in 2006, when he was just 19 years old.
Both driving Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Trucks built by their own Herbst/Smith Fabrication in Huntington Beach, Calif., brothers Tim Herbst, 56, and Troy Herbst, 53, will be among the favorites in the marquee SCORE racing division. Tim Herbst will drive the No. 19 Monster Energy Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith) while Troy will be behind the wheel of the near-identical No. 54 Monster Energy Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith). Troy’s second driver will be Las Vegas’ Pat Dean, 50, who won the 2018 SCORE Baja 1000 with Cameron Steele.
Terrible Herbst Motorsports, founded by late family patriarch and champion desert racer Jerry Herbst, has enjoyed nearly 150 SCORE race wins between Mr. Herbst, oldest brother Ed Herbst, Tim Herbst and Troy Herbst.
Ed and Tim Herbst combined for four season SCORE Trophy Truck point championships while Troy Herbst has won seven SCORE season point championships in the unlimited Class 1.
Originally from SoCal, second-generation desert racer Robby Gordon, 50, Charlottesville, N.C., has raced in many forms of motorsports from IndyCar to NASCAR to the Dakar Rally to off-road stadium racing, but has never left his desert-racing roots. He races in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division where he has earned a career 11 race wins in SCORE Trophy Truck, which has him tied for second with brothers Ed Herbst/Tim Herbst, Andy McMillin and Larry Ragland. Gordon drives the No. 77 Chevy Silverado (Custom).
Baldwin, 40, who along with Ed and Tim Herbst is the only four-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion, drives the No. 97 Monster Energy Baldwin Racing Toyota Tundra (ID) and his second driver will be short-course racing star Todd LeDuc, 40, Peoria, Ariz.
Vildosola Jr, is another second-gen SCORE Trophy Truck superstar and he is the only Mexican national who has won the SCORE Baja Triple Crown in the featured racing division and one of only nine racers who has ever accomplished the feat of winning the overall in SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
With six career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, Vildosola Jr, 37, of Mexicali, Mexico, is finishing a new Vildosola Racing truck and is currently 28th in season points in his No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 (Vildosola).
Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies, 32, has five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins including two in 2011 when he was selected the SCORE Rookie of the Year while winning the SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck point championship. Also competing in a variety of international rallies, Menzies drives the No. 7 Ford Raptor (Huseman). He is currently tied for fourth in the 2019 SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings.
One of RPM Racing’s ‘Young Guns’ is Lopez, 24, Tecate, Mexico.  Apdaly won the SCORE Trophy Truck season point title three consecutive years (2015-17) in the No. 9 Geiser-built Chevy Rally Truck and he has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins. He is currently 16th in the 2019 points in his class.
TV action sports announcer and another member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, Cameron Steele, 51, San Clemente, Calif., who won the last two races of the 2018 season, drives the No. 16 Monster Energy Desert Assassins Ford Raptor (Geiser). Steele is currently seventh in the SCORE Trophy Truck season points, just three points behind a three-way tie for fourth place.
With three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, Arciero, 46, another second-generation desert racer whose family lineage includes IndyCar racing as well, drives the No. 32 Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith). He is currently 12th in 2019 SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings out of 47 total starters.
THE CHALLENGERS
The list of challengers to go up against the SCORE Trophy Truck all-time race winners and season point champions is long and very capable and they are led by Andy McMillin’s two cousins.
All third generation desert racers from San Diego, Andy McMillin’s cousins Luke McMillin, 26 and his brother Dan McMillin, 31, are currently second and third in SCORE season points in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division.
Luke McMillin drives the No. 83 Ford F-150 (Racer-built) and his new second driver for this race will be Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Larry Roeseler, 62, Imperial, Calif. Dan McMillin, who will have Las Vegas’ Justin B. Smith, 35,  as his second driver for this race, drives the No. 23 Ford F-150 (Racer).
One of the most decorated desert racers of all time on both a motorcycle and in four-wheel vehicles, Roeseler has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins.
A second generation desert racer, Justin Lofton, 33, Brawley, Calif., has returned to his desert racing roots after spending several years racing stock cars where he won the 2009 ARCA point championship in his second season and also won a NASCAR Truck race before returning to the desert in 2013. He won this year’s Mint 400 in Las Vegas and drives the No. 41 Ford Raptor (Jimco).
AMA and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Ricky Johnson, 55, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. and prominent Ohio businessman and sports car racing champion Larry Connor, 69, of Miamisburg, Ohio, will race together to challenge for the top spot on the podium. The pair drives the No. 6 Team C Racing Chevy Silverado (Mason).
Mexico’s Alan Ampudia, and his brothers Aaron Ampudia and Rodrigo Ampudia, all from Ensenada, are tied for fourth in this year’s season points and will share the driving in their No. 10 Ford Raptor (ID).
Second-generation desert racers and twin brothers from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Brett Sourapas and Christian Sourapas, 23, are making their SCORE debut with their own team in their No. 88 Ford Raptor (Geiser). Their third driver for this race will be former SCORE motorcycle champion Ricky Brabec, 28, Hesperia, Calif. They have also drawn the first starting position in the race.
MAIN COURSE
The race features a course, finalized by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva of 400 miles. After the first 19.6 miles which will be used in both directions for the race, the course runs in a clockwise direction.
There are three physical checkpoints and 103 virtual checkpoints on the race course along with 13 speed zone areas that total 71.01 miles of the total 400 miles. The three physical checkpoints are located at Santa Catarina (race-mile 96.91), Llano Colorado (rm 230.15) and Santo Tomas (rm 321.94).
The historic race course is another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to over 3,000 feet. The course is another jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California.
In addition to the three physical checkpoints, central Ensenada for the start and finish, the Ensenada Arroyo and Ojos Negros area in both directions, the course will also go through such landmark Baja California locations as Heroes de Independencia, Nuevo Junction, Jamau, Valle de Trinidad, the infamous ‘Goat Trail’, Mike’s Sky Rancho, Rancho Las Truchas, Rancho Simpson, Colonet, San Antonio Del Mar, Rancho Johnson, Cerro Solo, Erendira, Acambaro and Uruapan.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official race course for this year’s Inaugural Lucerna SCORE Baja 400 continues through Friday. Pre-running is being held from race-mile 39 to race-mile 360.75. The first 19.6 miles, which will be used in both directions during the race, will be available for pre-running only on Thursday and Friday and only in the outbound direction. AIRING ON ESPN
The race will air domestically on a delayed basis as a one-hour special on the World of X Games program on ESPN and will be syndicated internationally to nearly 25 countries in Europe, Latin America, South America and Asia. Co-producing the shows with SCORE is the award-winning BCII TV of Los Angeles led by producer Bud Brutsman. Announcers are SCORE racers Cameron Steele and Aaron Ampudia.
GRAN HISTORIA
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 as the first of over 150 SCORE Baja races.
Ensenada is the heart and soul of the SCORE Baja races. Ensenada has hosted the start line 46 times and the finish line 42 times for the SCORE Baja 500. For the iconic SCORE Baja 1000, Ensenada will be hosting the start line this November for the 45th time and the finish line for the 26th time.
