     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—With famous desert racing names like MacCachren, Herbst, Gordon, McMillin, Baldwin, Menzies, Roeseler, Vildosola, Lopez, Steele, Arciero and Jones at the forefront, 35 SCORE Trophy Trucks are revved to rock and roar next Friday to lead the field from around the world into Baja California, Mexico at the iconic BFGoodrich Tires 52nd annual SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts.
Celebrating its 46th year as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, this year’s Granddaddy of All Desert Races will start and finish in the heart of Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico with race-week festivities and the race itself being held next Tuesday through Sunday (Nov. 19-24).
52nd BAJA MIL
The SCORE Baja 1000 endures at the pinnacle of motorsports as the most iconic, oldest, prestigious, toughest and longest continuously held desert race in the world.
Many of the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s massive BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts. The race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour special on ABC TV’s World of X Games programming.
Ensenada, “The Off-Road Capital of the World” is a coastal city on the Bahia de Todos Santos area of the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.
Over 275 vehicles are expected at the start line with racers from nearly 40 U.S. States and as many as 25 countries anticipated.
Long-time SCORE sponsor BFGoodrich Tires has also posted a US$40,000 contingency bonus for the overall 4-wheel winner to help commemorate the celebration of this legendary SCORE race.
This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be a loop race of 800.5 miles in the northern state of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula.
It will start for the 45th time and finish for the 26th time in Ensenada and the race is annually the finale of the four-race SCORE World Desert Championship, which has been held exclusively for the past four years on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
The race and its festivities will be held primarily in and around the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada and the start and finish of the legendary race will be adjacent to the Riviera.
With a total time limit of 34 hours in the elapsed-time race, the motorcycle and quad classes will start at 3 a.m. (PT) next Friday (Nov. 22) and the car, truck and UTV classes will follow with their start on at 10:30 a.m. (PT).  While the fastest vehicles are expected to cover the course in approximately 16 hours, all vehicles will have 34 hours from the time each starts to become an official finisher.
TOP GUNS
To say that the SCORE Trophy Truck ‘Monsters of the Desert’ field is loaded is clearly an understatement.
A total of 20 racers who have combined to win 95 of the 131 all-time SCORE races that have included the marquee racing division for high-tech, 950-horsepower unlimited custom trucks are entered in this year’s epic SCORE event.
Between them, Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren has 17 all-time SCORE Trophy Truck race wins to top the list followed by Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst (11), Robby Gordon, Charlotte , N.C. (11), Andy McMillin, San Diego (11), Las Vegas’ B.J. Baldwin (6), Mexico’s Gustavo ‘Tavo’ Vildosola (6), Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies (5), Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif. (4), Curt LeDuc, Cherry Valley, Calif. (4), Larry Roeseler, Imperial, Calif. (3), Gus Vildosola Sr, Mexicali, Mexico (3), Jesse Jones, Litchfield Park, Ariz. (2), Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2) Mexico’s Juan C. Lopez (2), Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif. (2) and Roger Norman, San Diego (2).
Menzies will be the second driver this year for Andy McMillin in the No. 31 all-wheel drive Chevy Silverado.
Steele will be racing in SCORE Trophy Truck No. 16 as well as being the driver of record also for the No. 2069 Class 2 Ford Bronco R racing prototype in memory of the legendary desert racer Rod Hall.
LeDuc will be racing in Class 2 this year with Steele and Norman will be racing in the Baja Challenge class.
Vildosola Sr will be racing this year with Scott Bailey, Riverside, Calif. in the SCORE TT Legend class for drivers over 50 years old.
With one SCORE Trophy Truck race win each are Dale Dondel, Murrieta, Calif., Rick D. Johnson, Barstow, Calif., Eduardo Laguna, Mexicali and Mexico, Billy Wilson, Corpus Christi, Texas. Johnson is racing this year in the SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck racers over 50 years old. Laguna will be racing in the unlimited Class 1.
Of that group of illustrious drivers who have won SCORE Trophy Truck individual races are eight racers who have combined to win 19 of the 25 all-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point championships.
Season champs entered in this race are Tim Herbst with four season SCORE Trophy Truck crowns with his older brother Ed Herbst (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003), Baldwin who also has four season titles (2006, 2008, 2012, 2013), Lopez (2015, 2016 and 2017) and McCachren (1994, 2007, 2018) each have three championships, Gordon who has two (1996, 2009), LeDuc who has one (1997), Jones who has one (2010) and Menzies who has one (2011).
LATEST ENTRY TOTAL
Entering late, on-site racer registration next Tuesday through Thursday, 265 official entries to date includes racers from 39 U.S. States and 22 Countries, the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck class leads the way with 35 entries (including six in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old).
Besides the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck, other 4-Wheel classes with double-figure entries so far are Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) with 26, Trophy Truck Spec with 23, the unlimited Class 1 with 14, Class 10 with 14, Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) with 13 and SCORE Lites with 12.
The Motorcycle classes with double-figure entries so far are Pro Moto Ironman with 16, Pro Moto 30 with 10, Pro Moto Unlimited with 8 and SPT Motorcycle with 16.

Included in the 265 official pre-registered entries of the more than 275 anticipated for this year’s renewal of the world’s most iconic desert race are competitors from 39 U.S. States and 22 countries.
U.S. States represented in the field of competitors to date are from Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington and Wyoming.
Besides the United States and host Mexico, countries represented to date in the total entry field are from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, England, Finland, France, India, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Peru, Qatar and Spain.
PRE-GREEN
The 52nd SCORE Baja 1000 race and race week festivities will cover next Tuesday through Sunday (Nov. 19-24).
Pre-race festivities include two days of Contingency and the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway (Wednesday, Nov. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 21) on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Contingency will run each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and pre-race tech will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. On Wednesday (Nov. 20), Contingency will be held for all motorcycles, quads and UTV classes along with several car/truck classes. On Thursday (Nov. 21), Contingency will be held for the balance of the car and truck classes including the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend, unlimited Class 1, Trophy Truck Spec and Class 10.
The pre-race mandatory driver/rider briefing will be held on Wednesday (Nov. 20) at 7 p.m. PT at the Hotel Lucerna Ensenada.
Racer registration will be held in the Red Room at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada. Racer registration will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT on Tuesday (Nov. 19), and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT on both Wednesday (Nov. 20) and Thursday (Nov. 21).
Media registration will be held in the Red Room as well at the Riviera from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday (Nov. 19), and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT on both Wednesday (Nov. 20) and Thursday (Nov. 21)
The BFGoodrich Tires/Baja California Secretary of Tourism SCORE Media Center will be open on Friday (Nov. 22) starting at 2:30 a.m. PT through the close of the race course. It will also be open on Sunday (Nov. 23) from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. PT. The SCORE Media Center will have WiFi available as well as live streaming from the start/finish line and live tracking of the vehicles in the race
SCORE sponsor Monster Energy will host the Monster Energy Papas y Beer SCORE Street Party on Avenida Ruiz in downtown Ensenada from 6 p.m. to midnight PT on Thursday, Nov. 21.
All of the week’s festivities will be aired both live and same-day including the race, airing via the internet on the SCORE website. Popular Rat Sult and veteran Dave Arnold will once again serve as hosts of the SCORE Live streaming.
POST GREEN
As the celebration continues Friday (Nov. 22) night to all day and evening on Friday and Saturday until shortly after midnight on Sunday (Nov. 23) while official finishers cross the line and tales and epic accomplishments are added to the legacy of the event.
The post-race awards fiesta will be held at the Hotel Lucerna Ensenada starting at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday (Nov. 23).
HONOR ROLL
Created by then SCORE owner Sal Fish in 1994, SCORE Trophy Truck is the marquee racing division in the sport. It features high-tech, 950-horsepower unlimited custom trucks.
Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer MacCachren, 54, is the defending SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion and he pilots the No. 11 Ford F-150 (Geiser-built).
Still considered a ‘youngster’ because of his age and looks, Andy McMillin, 32, a third generation desert racer from San Diego’s iconic McMillin racing family, won the first two races of this year and finished second in the third race to lead the 2019 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck points. McMillin will be driving his new Mason-built All-wheel drive No. 31 Chevy Silverado. He has 11 career all-time SCORE Trophy Truck race wins which ties him for second all-time in class history.
Andy McMillin and his father Scott are two of just nine racers who are winners of the SCORE Triple Crown of Baja having won the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000. Andy McMillin won three of his SCORE Trophy Truck races with his father Scott, two with MacCachren and one with Gordon. The Gordon win was his first in SCORE Trophy Truck back in 2006, when he was just 19 years old.
The second driver for Andy McMillin this year will be Las Vegas Bryce Menzies, 32, the 2011 SCORE Rookie of the Year and the SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion. Menzies has five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins.
Driving a Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Truck built by their own Herbst/Smith Fabrication in Huntington Beach, Calif., brothers Tim Herbst, 56, and Troy Herbst, 53, will be among the favorites in the marquee SCORE racing division. Troy Herbst and Tim Herbst will split the driving the No. 54 Monster Energy Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith). Their third driver will be Las Vegas’ Pat Dean, 51, who won the 2018 SCORE Baja 1000 with Cameron Steele.
Terrible Herbst Motorsports, founded by late family patriarch and champion desert racer Jerry Herbst, has enjoyed nearly 150 SCORE race wins between Mr. Herbst, oldest brother Ed Herbst, Tim Herbst and Troy Herbst.
Ed and Tim Herbst combined for four season SCORE Trophy Truck point championships while Troy Herbst has won seven SCORE season point championships in the unlimited Class 1.
Originally from SoCal, second-generation desert racer Robby Gordon, 50, Charlottesville, N.C., has raced in many forms of motorsports from IndyCar to NASCAR to the Dakar Rally to off-road stadium racing, but has never left his desert-racing roots. He races in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division where he has earned a career 11 race wins in SCORE Trophy Truck, which has him tied for second with brothers Ed Herbst/Tim Herbst, Andy McMillin and Larry Ragland. Gordon drives the No. 77 Chevy Silverado (Custom). Veteran Damen Jefferies, Apple Valley, Calif., will be Gordon’s second driver.
Baldwin, 40, who along with Ed and Tim Herbst is the only four-time SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion, drives the No. 97 Monster Energy Baldwin Racing Toyota Tundra (ID) and his second driver will be short-course racing star Todd LeDuc, 40, Peoria, Ariz.
Vildosola Jr, is another second-gen SCORE Trophy Truck superstar and he is the only Mexican national who has won the SCORE Baja Triple Crown in the featured racing division and one of only nine racers who has ever accomplished the feat of winning the overall in SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
With six career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, Vildosola Jr, 37, of Mexicali, Mexico, is finishing a new Vildosola Racing truck and is currently 23rd in season points after finishing third in class at September’s SCORE Baja 400 in his No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford F-150 (Vildosola).
One of RPM Racing’s ‘Young Guns’ is Lopez, 24, Tecate, Mexico.  Apdaly won the SCORE Trophy Truck season point title three consecutive years (2015, 2016, 2017) in the No. 9 Geiser-built Chevy Rally Truck and he has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins. He is currently 17th in the 2019 points in his class.
TV action sports announcer and another member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, Cameron Steele, 51, San Clemente, Calif., who won the last two races of the 2018 season, drives the No. 16 Monster Energy Desert Assassins Ford Raptor (Geiser). Steele is currently fourth in the SCORE Trophy Truck season points.
In SCORE Trophy Truck, Steele will split the driving in the No. 16 Team C Racing Chevy Silverado (Mason) with AMA and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Ricky Johnson, 55, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. He is also the driver of record in Class 2 in the No. 2069 Ford Bronco R racing prototype in honor of Rod Hall, the only racer who competed in all of the first 50 SCORE Baja 1000 races.
With four career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins following his victory at the recent SCORE Baja 400, Arciero, 46, another second-generation desert racer whose family lineage includes IndyCar racing as well, drives the No. 32 Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith). He is currently 11th in 2019 SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings out of 51 total starters. Arciero’s second driver for this race will be San Diego’s Dan McMillin, 31, whose own truck was destroyed by fire at the  SCORE Baja 400.
Jones, 53, is anxious to debut his new Mason Motorsports all-wheel drive No. 76 Ford F-250. Jones’ additional drivers for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be the top two group winners from the 2019 Dakar Rally.
Joining Jones in shifts behind the wheel in the No. 76 will be Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah, 48, who won the car/truck classes for the third time this year at the Dakar Rally and Australia’s Toby Price, 32, who won the Dakar motorcycle competition for the second time this year.
THE CHALLENGERS
The list of challengers to go up against the SCORE Trophy Truck all-time race winners and season point champions is long and very capable and they are led by one of Andy McMillin’s two cousins.
Another third generation desert racer from San Diego, Andy McMillin’s cousin Luke McMillin, 26, is currently second in SCORE season points in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division.
Luke McMillin drives the No. 83 Ford F-150 (Racer-built) and his second driver for this race will be Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Larry Roeseler, 62, Imperial, Calif.
One of the most decorated desert racers of all time on both a motorcycle and in four-wheel vehicles, Roeseler has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins. He also has a race-record 13 overall wins in the SCORE Baja 1000, including 10 overall wins on a motorcycle.
A second generation desert racer, Justin Lofton, 33, Brawley, Calif., has returned to his desert racing roots after spending several years racing stock cars where he won the 2009 ARCA point championship in his second season and also won a NASCAR Truck race before returning to the desert in 2013. He won this year’s Mint 400 in Las Vegas and drives the No. 41 Ford Raptor (Jimco).
Mexico’s Alan Ampudia, and his brothers Aaron Ampudia and Rodrigo Ampudia, all from Ensenada, are third in this year’s season points and will share the driving in their No. 10 Ford Raptor (ID).
Another one of contenders in this heavyweight matchup will be COPs Racing’s Zak Langley, 44, Manhattan Beach, Calif., who will split driving with rapidly evolving talent Kyle Jergensen, 23, Oak Hills, Calif. in the No. 50 Ford F-150 (ESM).
Also in the hunt could very well be the new team of Casey Mears and Doug Fortin Jr in the No. 42 Axalta Ford Raptor (Geiser).
Mears, 41, the youngest member of the legendary ‘Mears Gang’ racing family of Bakersfield, Calif. that has included his grandfather Bill, father Roger, uncle Rick and brother Roger Jr, has spent 15 years in NASCAR Cup racing and will be making his first start in a SCORE race.
Fortin Jr, 49, of El Cajon, Calif., is a veteran SCORE racer and three-time overall winner of the SCORE Baja 1000.
Veteran Hall of Famer Robbie Pierce, 60, of Alpine, Calif. has brought in a couple of young guns that will easily make him a challenger in the No. 30 Ford Raptor built by his own Jimco Racing Products Company.
Splitting the driving with Pierce will be Rafael Navarro IV, 26, Temecula, Calif. and Ramon Bio, 20, Spring Valley, Calif.
Another of the long-shot contenders will be the No. 70 Ford Raptor (Herbst/Smith) driven by Kevin Thompson, New Braunfels, Texas and Harley Letner, Corona, Calif.
OH, WHAT A COURSE!
As it has for over four and one-half decades, SCORE has put together another memorable race course for the 52nd anniversary, this one a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain and inspiring beauty that the northern state of the majestic Baja California peninsula has to offer.
SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva has designed and finalized this year’s race course of 800.5 miles. The course has three physical checkpoints and approximately 281 virtual checkpoints along the way to the finish line. There will also be approximately 17 speed zones for a total of 70.77 race miles.
Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course travels East to Ojos Negros and then runs counter-clockwise in a weaving route around both the West and then the East side of the northern part of the peninsula.
The course will run in a counter-clockwise direction after the two-way section to the Ojos Negros area and down along the Pacific Ocean through Uruapan, Santo Tomas, Erendira, Santo Domingo Wash and San Quintin.
From there it will travel Northeast going by Rancho El Coyote, across and around Mike’s Sky Rancho, down by Simpson’s Ranch. The route then continues up to a speed zone on Highway 3 before going down over Laguna Del Diablo through Morelia Junction down and back up past San Felipe before heading back up through Laguna Salada, then South back through Santa Catarina to Ojos Negros and the finish on the two-way section back into Ensenada.
The course will include going through two of Baja California’s infamous washes on the east side of the course—Matomi Wash and Amarillas Wash.
The three physical checkpoints will be located starting with Checkpoint 1 which will be near Vicente Guerrero (race mile 224.25), Checkpoint 2 will be at the El Chinero Highway 3 Road Crossing (rm535.94) and Checkpoint 3 will be near Santa Catarina (rm 708.47).
Because of two extremely challenging areas on the course, Class 7SX, Baja Challenge, Class 9, Class 11, Vintage Classes and all Sportsman classes will be running a reduced course of 701.48 total miles.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running on the official race course continues through next Thursday.
After the two-way section out to the Ojos Negros area, the course runs in a counter-clockwise direction down to along the Pacific Ocean and around Mike’s Sky Rancho down through Laguna Del Diablo, Morelia Junction and Matomi Wash and Amarillas Wash before heading North near San Felipe and back up through Laguna Salada, and then down South to Ojos Negros and the finish line in Ensenada.
Pre-running starts at race-mile 39.10 and finishes at rm765.9.
Outbound only, the first section of the race course will be open for pre-running only on next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during race week (Nov. 19-21).

The 2019 SCORE World Desert Championship is being televised on the ABC TV family of networks, marking the first time back on the ABC network since the 1967 and 1968 coverage of the Baja 1000 on ABC’s old Wide World of Sports show.
