    ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Monster Energy key executive Matt Burroughs leads the SCORE overall and Pro UTV FI class points after the first of two races in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship. Racing in the Pro UTV FI class that had a race-high 21 entries, Burroughs, won his class at the recent season-opening BFGoodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4 Wheel Parts, which was held in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

The pandemic-abbreviated two-race 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship will conclude with the iconic BFGoodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts. This year’s internationally-televised Granddaddy of All Desert Races will be held Nov. 17-22 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico and contested over a spectacular 934.47-mile race course starting and finishing in Ensenada.
With online racer registration opening this Thursday (Oct. 8) pre-race activities for the world’s most prestigious desert race will be held in Ensenada on Nov. 17-19 and the race will start on Friday, Nov. 20 and the course will close early Sunday morning Nov. 22.
BIOSECURITY PROTOCOLS
As was the case at the recent SCORE Baja 500, significant BioSecurity health and safety protocols are being finalized by SCORE and the government authorities and health officials to be implemented at the event. With everything still fluid in regards to this pandemic, announcement of the specific protocols for this race are expected to be announced within the next three weeks.
BURROUGHS LEADS OVERALL & UTV
A senior vice-president of Monster Energy and winner of his Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class at the SCORE Baja 500 for his first SCORE race victory, Burroughs, 51, Norco, also leads the 2020 SCORE Overall point standings.
Burroughs, who joined the Can-Am factory UTV team in 2017, split the driving in San Felipe with Bradley Howe, Leona Valley, Calif. and Mitchell Alsup, Bakersfield, Calif. in the No. 2948 Can-Am X3 turbo UTV.  He has earned 111 season points to lead the field heading to November’s season-finale.
POINT REGS
SCORE point regulations for 2020 have both races counting for final points.
SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within each class.
TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS
Second in SCORE overall points and second in the Pro UTV FI class is the brother team of Jason Murray, Tustin, Calif. and Derek Murray, Yorba Linda, Calif., with 105 points in their Can-Am X3.
Third overall and leading the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings is San Diego’s Daniel McMillin, who was the overall winner of the recent BFGoodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4 Wheel Parts with 104 points in his No. 23 Mark Racing Mason-built Chevy C1500.
Fourth overall and third in the Pro UTV FI is Wayne Matlock, Alpine, Calif. with 101 points in his No. 2971 Polaris RZR XP4 Turbo. Kristen Matlock, Wayne’s wife, won here Pro UTV NA class in San Felipe and was the fastest overall of 36 Pro UTVs in four different classes in the season-opener and has 95 points in her No. 1954 Polaris RZR XP4 1000.
Fifth overall after one race and leading the Trophy Truck Spec class in his No. 260 Jefferies-Chevy is Santiago Creel, of Mexico City, with 100 points. Creel split the driving in San Felipe with Ensenada’s Jorge Sampietro.
SAMUELS LEADS M/Cs AGAIN!
Two-time reigning SCORE Overall Motorcycle and Pro Moto Unlimited class point championship team lead by Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif., has now won nine consecutive SCORE Baja races following their SCORE Baja 500 victory in San Felipe. His principal co-rider this year is once again Justin Morgan, El Cajon, Calif., who now has 12 straight individual SCORE Baja race wins. Third rider for the team is Justin Jones, Murrieta, Calif. The trio leads the Pro Moto Unlimited class with 95 points on their No. 1x SLR Honda CRF450X.
SCORE TROPHY TRUCK LEADERS
Celebrating its 27th season as the marquee racing division in the sport, lined up behind the Daniel McMillin, who split the driving duties with Las Vegas’ Justin B. Smith in San Felipe, in the point standings in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 950-horsepower custom trucks are several more of the world’s finest desert racers.
In second place in SCORE Trophy Trucks and sixth in SCORE overall points with 98 points is Las Vegas’ Tim Herbst in hi No. 19 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorsports Herbst-Smith Ford F-150. The middle of three Las Vegas racing brothers, Tim Herbst, who shared the driving duties in San Felipe with Las Vegas’ Pat Dean, has 98 points.
Third in SCORE Trophy Truck points following his performance at this year’s SCORE Baja 500 is Daniel McMillin’s younger brother Luke McMillin, also of San Diego, with 94 points in his No. 83 Mark Racing Racer-built Ford F-150.
Fourth in the SCORE Trophy Truck class are Ensenada brothers Alan Ampudia and Aaron Ampudia, winners of last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 with 91 points in their No. 10 Papas Y Beer ID-built Ford Raptor.
Fifth in SCORE Trophy Truck points and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee (2019) is former Indy Car/NASCAR Cup series driver/NASCAR Team owner/Dakar Rally racer and desert racer is Robby Gordon, Charlotte, N.C. with 89 points in his No. 77 Speed Energy Custom-Chevy Silverado.
Sixth on the SCORE Trophy Truck point grid is AMA and ORMHoF inductee Larry Roeseler Boulevard, Calif., who drives the No. 43 Baja Jerky/Cantina Racing ID-Toyota Tundra and has 88 total points.
SIX CLASS LEADERS IN TOP 12 OVERALL
Including Burroughs in Pro UTV FI, Daniel McMillin in SCORE Trophy Truck and Creel in Trophy Truck Spec, a total of six classes have at least one racer in the top 12 SCORE Overall 4-wheel point standings of the two-race 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship.
The classes among the top dozen point leaders are Pro UTV FI (5 racers), SCORE Trophy Truck (2), Trophy Truck Spec (1), Class 1 (1), Class 10 (1), SCORE Lites (1) and Pro UTV Unlimited (1).
Besides Pro UTV FI, SCORE Trophy Truck and Trophy Truck Spec the other three 2020 class point leaders in the top dozen in the 2020 SCORE Overall points are Cody Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif. ABC TV AGAIN IN 2020
For the second straight year, the 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship will air on the ABC family of networks. The two-races will air as specials on ABC TV’s World of X Games program with replays on ESPN2.
ABC first covered the 1967 and 1968 Baja 1000 races on the old ABC Wide World of Sports show with Jim McKay and again in the late 1980s with veteran motorsports journalist Sam Posey.
