ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Anticipation and momentum are rising rapidly as SCORE champion racers Rob MacCachren, Bobby Patton/Robbie Pierce, Cody Parkhouse and his father Brian Parkhouse, former motorcycle champion Francisco Arredondo, Giovanni Spinali and his motorcycle team and solo motorcycle racers Juan Carlos Salvatierra and Fabricio Fuentes are among the latest entries for November’s iconic internationally-televised season-ending BFGoodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts, the final round of the pandemic-abbreviated two-race 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Starting and finishing under strict BioSecurity health and safety protocols in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, race-week festivities and the Granddaddy of All Desert Races itself will be held Nov. 17-22.
The SCORE Baja 1000 is at the pinnacle of motorsports as the most iconic, oldest, prestigious, toughest and longest continuously held desert race in the world.
Because of the Pandemic BioSecurity protocols, all race-week activities and the start/finish line area will be closed to the public. Spectators, adhering to the protocols, will be allowed to watch the race from around the race course.

53rd SCORE BAJA 1000
Many of the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s massive BFGoodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts. The race will be televised on a delayed basis as a one-hour special on ABC TV’s World of X Games programming.
Ensenada, “The Off-Road Capital of the World” is a coastal city on the Bahia de Todos Santos area of the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of the U.S. border at San Diego.
Over 200 vehicles are expected at the start line with racers from nearly 30 U.S. States and as many as 15 countries anticipated. Long-time SCORE sponsor and race title sponsor BFGoodrich Tires has also posted a US$25,000 contingency bonus for the overall 4-wheel winner to help commemorate the renewal of this legendary SCORE race.
This year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be a loop race of a spectacular 898.40 miles in the northern state of Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. The distance is a race-record for a loop race.
It will start for the 46th time and finish for the 27th time in Ensenada and the race is annually the finale of the SCORE World Desert Championship, which has been held exclusively for the past five years in Baja California.
With a total time limit of 40 hours in the elapsed-time race, the motorcycle and quad classes will start at 4 a.m. (PT) on Friday, Nov. 20 and the car, truck and UTV classes will follow with their start on at 10 a.m. (PT). While the fastest vehicles are expected to cover the course in approximately 18 hours, all vehicles will have 40 hours from the time each starts to become an official finisher.
MAC ATTACK
Las Vegas’ Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Rob MacCachren, 55, is the winningest all-time off-road racer with over 300 career open desert and career short-course victories. He has nine career class wins in the SCORE Baja 1000 including four overall crowns. Included in his overall wins were three consecutive years (2014, 2015, 2016). In 2014 MacCachren won with Andy McMillin and Jason Voss as his additional drivers. In 2015, McMillin was his second driver and in 2016 Voss was his additional driver.
MacCachren also has nine all-time career season SCORE class championships. He is also one of only nine racers who have won the overall in the SCORE Baja Triple Crown races—the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
He drives the No. 11 Geiser Bros-built MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150 in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division. He is the all-time leader in SCORE Trophy Truck career race wins with 17 total.
Another of MacCachren’s many magical moments in his storied career was winning the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck titles in 2018 in the 50th anniversary of the SCORE Baja 500.
TALENTED TEAM
Prominent Texas energy entrepreneur, real estate investor and co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bobby Patton, 57, of Fort Worth, and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee and owner of the iconic Jimco Racing Products company Robbie Pierce, 61, Alpine Calif., have moved up as a talented team to compete this year in the SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years of age.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000, the dynamic duo will split the driving in the Jimco-built No. 20L Chevy Silverado.
PARKHOUSE FAMILY
Keeping it all in the family, Cody Parkhouse and his father Brian Parkhouse will be racing in the unlimited Class 1, fresh from an impressive class victory in September’s SCORE Baja 500.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000, the son/father duo will be a favorite in Class 1 in their No. 127 Jimco-Chevy open-wheel desert race car. Cody Parkhouse, 33, and his father Brian Parkhouse, 61, both of Long Beach, Calif., are veteran SCORE race champions.
As a pair, the Parkhouse family has three Class 1 victories in SCORE Baja 500 (2014, 2015, 2020) and Cody Parkhouse has two Class 1 season point championships in 2012 and 2013.
ARREDONDO RETURNS
Guatemala’s Francisco Arredondo, 43, returns to the SCORE World Desert Championship after a absence of almost three years. Arredondo won the 2017 SCORE Overall motorcycle and Pro Moto Unlimited titles with three class wins in four races on the No. 45x BREMEN-Arredondo-Haines Racing Honda CRF450X.
His primary teammates were Shane Esposito and Justin Morgan. He also had assistance from Roberto Villalobos in winning the 2017 SCORE Baja 500 and Max Eddy Jr. and Ty Davis in winning the epic 50th anniversary of the SCORE Baja 1000.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 Arredondo switches to a four-wheel class to drive the Bremen No. 1945 Honda Talon in Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class supported again by Chris Haines Racing.
SPINALI SUPER TEAM
Veteran SCORE age-group motorcycle champion Giovanni Spinali, 54, has put together another championship team to run in Pro Moto 50 for riders over 50 years old.
Spinali won his class in the 2018 SCORE Baja 1000 and he has earned three season Pro Moto 50 class titles (2014, 2018, 2019).
Riding on his No. 500x Yamaha YZ450F, Spinali has put together another stellar team to tackle the longest loop race course in SCORE Baja 1000. He will have six co-riders this year.
Joining Spinali in this year’s adventure will be age group veterans Dan Connelly, 57, Rosarito Beach, Calif., John Griffin, 52, Lake Forest, Calif., Jim O’Neal, 73, Santa Barbara, Calif., Earl Roberts, 58, La Jolla, Calif., Bill Gilbert, 52, Ladera Ranch, Calif. and Manuel Ochoa, 50, Mexicali, Mexico.
BOLIVIAN IRONMEN
SCORE has had few racers from Bolivia compete in a SCORE race but this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will see a pair of Bolivian international rally racers and national motorcross champions—Juan Carlos ‘Chavo’ Salvatierra and Fabricio Fuentes, each competing as solo riders in the SCORE Pro Moto Ironman class.
Salvatierra, 39, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, has raced nine years in the Dakar Rally, also mountain biking and triathlons. Considered the most important athlete in the history of Bolivia, In 2011, Salvatierra became the first racer from Bolivia to race in the Dakar Rally. He is also a nine-time Bolivian National Motocross champion.
He won the Pro Moto Ironman class in September’s SCORE Baja 500, his first SCORE race.
“Racing solo in the SCORE Baja 500 was like doing four stages of the Dakar Rally in one day. The SCORE Baja 1000 will be twice as demanding, but it is a challenge that I am willing to face,” says Salvatierra, who will compete on his No. 725x Villamontes Racing KTM 500 EXC-F motorcycle.
Salvatierra wants to climb to the top of the podium and add a new world title to his career. He was already World Cross Country Rally Champion in 2013, won the 2014 Rally of the Pharaohs as well as a top 10 finish in the Dakar Rally in 2017.
Honored by the Bolivian Senate in 2019 for his accomplishments on and off of the motorcycle, Salvatierra is both a UNICEF Ambassador and a Special Olympic Ambassador.
Fuentes, 43, Villamontes, Bolivia, four-time Bolvian National Motocross champion who competed in the Dakar Rally from 2014 through 2019. He races for Villamontes Racing. Fuentes will ride the No. 785x KTM 500 EXC-F motorcycle.
STATES, COUNTRIES
Included in the first 81 official entry applications of the more than 200 anticipated for this year’s renewal of the world’s most iconic desert race are racers from 22 U.S. States and eight countries.
U.S. States represented in the field of competitors to date are from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Besides the United States and host Mexico, countries represented to date in the total entry field are from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Netherlands and South Africa.
PRE-RUNNING
Pre-running on the official loop-race record 898.40-mile race course opened this past Saturday. The course runs in a counter-clockwise direction after the two-way section to the Ojos Negros area and down along the Pacific Ocean and around San Felipe and the Sea of Cortez before heading back up through Cordillera de Molina and back to Ojos Negro and the finish in Ensenada.
Pre-running starts at race-mile 33.53 and finishes at rm864.87. The first 33.53 miles of the course, which will be run in both directions during the race, will be open for pre-running outbound only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or race week (Nov. 17-19).
The challenging race course then winds its way through four of Baja California’s infamously magnificent washes: Amarillas, Chanate, Huatamote and Matomi before heading through the San Felipe area along the Sea of Cortez and West through Cordillera de Molina and then back to Ojos Negros to the finish just on the Eastern outskirts in Ensenada.
There are four physical full-stop checkpoints and 355 numbered virtual checkpoints. Physical checkpoints: CP1-El Socorro (race mile 206.60), CP2-Valle de Trinidad (rm407.95), CP3-End of Matomi Wash (rm602.85) and CP 4-El Alamo (rm838.50). The race route also has a total of 20 Speed Zones.
All Sportsman classes along with Pro classes 7SX, 11 and 9 will run a reduced course of 767.06 miles.

BIOSECURITY PROTOCOLS
As was the case at the recent SCORE Baja 500, significant BioSecurity health and safety protocols are being finalized by SCORE and the government authorities and health officials to be implemented at the event. With everything still fluid in regards to this pandemic, the specific protocols for this race are expected to be similar to what was mandated for September’s SCORE Baja 500.
For certain though, no spectators will be allowed to attend pre-race contingency, the start or the finish of the race itself. They will be allowed to watch the race around the course, following BioSecurity protocol requirements.

ABC TV AGAIN IN 2020
For the second straight year, the 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship will air on the ABC family of networks. The two-races will air as specials on ABC TV’s World of X Games program with replays on ESPN2.
ABC first covered the 1967 and 1968 Baja 1000 races on the old ABC Wide World of Sports show with Jim McKay and again in the late 1980s with veteran motorsports journalist Sam Posey.

“Racing solo in the SCORE Baja 500 was like doing four stages of the Dakar Rally in one day. The SCORE Baja 1000 will be twice as demanding, but it is a challenge that I am willing to face,” says Salvatierra, who will compete on his No. 725x Villamontes Racing KTM 500 EXC-F motorcycle.
Salvatierra wants to climb to the top of the podium and add a new world title to his career. He was already World Cross Country Rally Champion in 2013, won the 2014 Rally of the Pharaohs as well as a top 10 finish in the Dakar Rally in 2017.
Honored by the Bolivian Senate in 2019 for his accomplishments on and off of the motorcycle, Salvatierra is both a UNICEF Ambassador and a Special Olympic Ambassador.
Fuentes, 43, Villamontes, Bolivia, four-time Bolvian National Motocross champion who competed in the Dakar Rally from 2014 through 2019. He races for Villamontes Racing. Fuentes will ride the No. 785x KTM 500 EXC-F motorcycle.
STATES, COUNTRIES
Included in the first 81 official entry applications of the more than 200 anticipated for this year’s renewal of the world’s most iconic desert race are racers from 22 U.S. States and eight countries.
U.S. States represented in the field of competitors to date are from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Besides the United States and host Mexico, countries represented to date in the total entry field are from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Netherlands and South Africa.
PRE-RUNNING
Pre-running on the official loop-race record 898.40-mile race course opened this past Saturday. The course runs in a counter-clockwise direction after the two-way section to the Ojos Negros area and down along the Pacific Ocean and around San Felipe and the Sea of Cortez before heading back up through Cordillera de Molina and back to Ojos Negro and the finish in Ensenada.
Pre-running starts at race-mile 33.53 and finishes at rm864.87. The first 33.53 miles of the course, which will be run in both directions during the race, will be open for pre-running outbound only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or race week (Nov. 17-19).
The challenging race course then winds its way through four of Baja California’s infamously magnificent washes: Amarillas, Chanate, Huatamote and Matomi before heading through the San Felipe area along the Sea of Cortez and West through Cordillera de Molina and then back to Ojos Negros to the finish just on the Eastern outskirts in Ensenada.
There are four physical full-stop checkpoints and 355 numbered virtual checkpoints. Physical checkpoints: CP1-El Socorro (race mile 206.60), CP2-Valle de Trinidad (rm407.95), CP3-End of Matomi Wash (rm602.85) and CP 4-El Alamo (rm838.50). The race route also has a total of 20 Speed Zones.
All Sportsman classes along with Pro classes 7SX, 11 and 9 will run a reduced course of 767.06 miles.

BIOSECURITY PROTOCOLS
As was the case at the recent SCORE Baja 500, significant BioSecurity health and safety protocols are being finalized by SCORE and the government authorities and health officials to be implemented at the event. With everything still fluid in regards to this pandemic, the specific protocols for this race are expected to be similar to what was mandated for September’s SCORE Baja 500.
For certain though, no spectators will be allowed to attend pre-race contingency, the start or the finish of the race itself. They will be allowed to watch the race around the course, following BioSecurity protocol requirements.

ABC TV AGAIN IN 2020
For the second straight year, the 2020 SCORE World Desert Championship will air on the ABC family of networks. The two-races will air as specials on ABC TV’s World of X Games program with replays on ESPN2.
ABC first covered the 1967 and 1968 Baja 1000 races on the old ABC Wide World of Sports show with Jim McKay and again in the late 1980s with veteran motorsports journalist Sam Posey.
