ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Building experience and some years under his belt along the trail upwards, SoCal’s youthful dynamo Christopher Polvoorde leads the SCORE Overall point standings and the massive Trophy Truck Spec class as well following his stunning season-opening class victory at this month’s King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250.
Round 1 of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship was held April 2-3 in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.
After qualifying in fourth position in San Felipe, Polvoorde, 21 of Hemet, Calif., pulled off a major upset over a race-high field of 36 starters in his class while bolting to his first SCORE Baja race victory.
At the start of the 49th season of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the top 21 overall point leaders are separated by just 20 total points in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship Overall point standings. Four classes have racers in the top 25 overall points after Round 1.
POINT REGS
SCORE point regulations has all four races counting for final points toward season point championships. Racers are allowed one substitute driver/rider for the season but the driver/rider of record has to either start or finish the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.
SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within each class.
CP RACING STARTS ON TOP
Polvoorde may be ‘only’ 21 years old, but he has already been racing for over eight years and has evolved quickly into a SCORE Baja racing championship contender.
Polvoorde has raced in many different disciplines including Short Course, Desert Racing, Rally Racing, Midget Racing, Robby Gordon’s Stadium Trucks, Kart Racing and the King of the Hammers where he won his class this year.
When he isn’t driving four-wheel race vehicles, he also is an avid mountain bike racer in his limited spare time.
Driving the No. 204 CP Racing Mason Motorsports-Ford, he has earned 126 points so far in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Polvoorde is also a full-time college student attending the University of San Diego on scholarship seeking a double major in finance and real estate through the USD School of Business.
SCORE TROPHY TRUCK LEADER
Following in the dusty tracks of his grandfather Corky McMillin and his father Mark McMillin in desert racing, Luke McMillin, who qualified third behind Bryce Menzies and Justin Lofton, closed in on Menzies after getting by Lofton fairly early in this year’s San Felipe race. The battled raged for well over 100 miles as McMillin got by Menzies when the later had stopped to change a flat and then Menzies got by McMillin when the No. 83 had an issue while pitting and McMillin passed Menzies for the last time when the No. 7 had another flat.
After losing by just 15.54 seconds to Menzies in 2021, McMillin won this year with a victory margin of two minutes, nine seconds. It was McMillin’s first SCORE San Felipe 250 race with his No. 83AWD Chevy 1500 Mason-built SCORE Trophy Truck which debuted at last year’s SCORE Baja 500. He has 126 season points, second behind Polvoorde by just two points.
After winning the SCORE Baja 1000 in both 2020 (splitting driving with Larry Roeseler) and 2022 (splitting the driving with Rob MacCachren), McMillin drove solo to earn his first SCORE Trophy Truck win in San Felipe. He also won in the unlimited Class 1 10 years ago when he was just 19 years old.
McMillin has now earned three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins and he also has four career SCORE season point championships include 2020 in SCORE Trophy Truck.
The victory in San Felipe also was the 100th SCORE Baja race win for his tire sponsor-BFGoodrich Tires, the official tire of SCORE for 46 years.
TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS
Behind Polvoorde in first and Luke McMillin in second, also in the top five SCORE Overall point leaders after San Felipe are third place Jason Coleman, Huntington Beach, Calif., No. 292 Herbst/Smith-Ford (Trophy Truck Spec) with 120 points, fourth place Justin Lambert, Bakersfield, Calif., No. 2918 Polaris RZR XP4 Turbo S (Pro UTV FI) with 119 points and in fifth is Bryce Menzies, Las Vegas, No. 7 Ford Raptor (Mason) (SCORE Trophy Truck).
Coleman and Menzies are second in their respective class points while Lambert leads the points in his Forced Induction UTV class that 29 starters in San Felipe.
QUINN ATOP IN CLASS 1
For many years a second driver for the wonderful Wilson Motorsports team, Kyle Quinn, 34, Long Beach, Calif., stepped into the lead driver position in one of the team’s entries and won the unlimited Class 1 at the SCORE San Felipe 250 in the No. 138 Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.
With regular DOR Brian Wilson not available for all races in 2022, Quinn took the lead and shared driving duties in San Felipe with Brian Wilson’s uncle Ronny Wilson, 60 of Long Beach, Calif. Together, the duo defeated a class with 10 starters and earned 100 season points.
WRIGHT TOP OVERALL IN PRO MOTO
Following several seasons as a Pro motorcycle age group class co-rider, Brandon Wright, 45, Oak Hills, Calif. not only won the Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) class in this year’s King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 over 10 starters in his class, he earned enough points to be the current overall SCORE Pro Motorcycle point leader.
With 100 points for his class win, he rides the No. 750x Husqvarna FE501 motorcycle.
W. MATLOCK ON TOP OF UTVs
Veteran SoCal SCORE champion racer Wayne Matlock beat 55 UTVs competing in five different classes including 10 in his Pro UTV Open class to also emerge as the SCORE UTV Overall point leader after the first race of 2022.
Matlock, 44, of Alpine, Calif., drove solo in his No. 1871 Matlock Racing Polaris RZR Pro R to the UTV Overall title to 100 season points.
This was his eighth career SCORE San Felipe 250 class victory. He also has seven career SCORE season class point titles, including five on quads and two in UTVs.
SALVATIERRA LEADS PRO MOTO UNLIMITED
After winning the season point championship for two years in the brutally tough Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, Bolivia’s acclaimed Juan Carlos Salvatierra moved to the Pro Moto Unlimited class and with two additional riders won the fastest class on two wheels in San Felipe in his first attempt in this legendary class.  In San Felipe, his co-riders were Mexico’s Arturo Salas Jr, 19, and San Diego’s Shane Logan, 20.
The trio rode on Salvatierra’s KTM 450SX-F, riding the final 47 miles of the race without a seat to cushion the blows of the rugged terrain.
Salvatierra, 40, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, has raced nine years in the Dakar Rally, also mountain biking and triathlons. Considered the most important athlete in the history of Bolivia, in 2011, Salvatierra became the first athlete from Bolivia to race in the Dakar Rally. He is also a nine-time Bolivian National Motocross champion.
He capped his incredible 2021 season by riding solo on his No. 725x motorcycle in the 54th SCORE Baja 1000 to a winning tedious time of 34 hours, 39 minutes, 13 seconds over the brutally-tough 1226.35-mile race course.
