     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—With pre-running on the official race course opening next Saturday, among the newest entries on the rapidly growing entry list for September’s 3rd SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels, include two championship entries from USA’s Wilson Motorsports, Canada’s newcomer Ken Stanick, USA’s veteran SCORE champion Mike Cafro, Mexico’s legendary champion Francisco Septien, USA’s super-vet champ Marc Burnett, USA’s young superstar Kaden Wells USA’s Hagle brothers and USA’s Matlock spouses.
WHEN
The youngest race in the long and storied nearly 50-year history of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization will be held Sept. 13-18 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
EARLY BIRDS
Among the latest of the 122 entries of over 225 official entries expected in this newest of the legendary SCORE Baja races are two Class 1 entries from Wilson Motorsports, Long Beach, Calif., Brad Wilson and Kyle Quinn, Canada’s Ken Stanick, North Vancouver, British Columbia, in Trophy Truck Spec, USA’s Mike Cafro, Temecula, Calif., in Pro UTV Open, Mexico’s legendary Francisco Septien, Ensenada in Pro Moto Ironman, USA’s Marc Burnett, Chula Vista, Calif., in Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction), USA’s Kaden Wells, Hurricane, Utah, in Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated), Ben Hagle, Somis, Calif., in Class 10, Kristen Matlock, Alpine, Calif. in Pro UTV Open and her husband Wayne Matlock, also in Pro UTV Open.
WHAT
Online racer registration along with a detailed schedule of events both are available on the SCORE website for Round 3 of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship. Entries from all across the United States and around the world are anticipated for the upcoming internationally-televised desert race in Mexico’s Baja California.
Inaugurated in 2019, the SCORE Baja 400 was not held in 2020 because of the global pandemic and in 2021 started and finished without spectators Northeast of the central city.
The two defending overall and SCORE Trophy Truck champions in this new race are Ryan Arciero, Foothill Ranch, Calif. (2019) and Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies (2021).
ONLINE RACER REGISTRATION
Online registration, by class, for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads, is ongoing through the SCORE website. Information on all SCORE races can be found on the home page under the Race Info tab.
Online racer registration will close at 5 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, Aug. 31. In person registration will be held in the SCORE Ensenada office until 5 p.m. PDT on Thursday, Sept. 8.

WHERE
The race and pre-race festivities will be in the heart of Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, 80 miles south of San Diego. All race festivities including racer registration, media registration pre-race contingency and the start/finish line compound will all be held in or adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center. Contingency and the start/finish line area will once again be the fantastic, fan-friendly Boulevard Costero.
THE FIELD
Nearly 225 vehicles are expected at the start line for this third-time SCORE race with racers from as many as 25 U.S. States and nearly 15 countries anticipated. Pro and Sportsman Classes are offered for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads. To date there are racers from 21 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Costa Rica, England, France, New Zealand, Peru and Venezuela.
DOUBLE DIGITS
Leading the list of entries with double-digit lineups so far are SCORE Trophy Truck with 32 entries (including seven in SCORE TT Legend for drivers over 50 years old), Trophy Truck Spec with 19 entries and Class 10 with 10 entries to date.
WILSON MOTORSPORTS
One of numerous prolific third-generation desert racing teams competing with SCORE, Wilson Motorsports has once again entered two race cars in the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars. Both race cars are Chevy-powered Jimco vehicles.
Brad Wilson, 33, of Long Beach, Calif., is the driver of record for the No. 153 race car while long-time additional driver Kyle Quinn, 34, Lakewood, Calif. will be the driver of record for this year with SCORE in the No. 138 Wilson Motorsports race car.  Brad Wilson’s cousin, Brian Wilson, 37, has always been the DOR but Brian Wilson will not be able to make all of the races this year so Quinn is the official DOR for the team.
In this year’s King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250, Wilson Motorsports claimed two of the podium positions in the unlimited Class 1. Quinn teamed with Brad’s father Ronny Wilson, 60, also of Long Beach, Calif., to win the Class 1 over 10 starters in the class for unlimited open-wheel cars and Brad Wilson finished in third place.
In June’s SCORE Baja 500, Quinn finished on the podium in third with Ronny Wilson while Brad Wilson finished sixth in class.
Entering the SCORE Baja 400, Quinn/R. Wilson continue to lead the Class 1 point standings while Brad Wilson currently is third in the point standings for the class for unlimited open-wheel desert race cars.
OH CANADA!
A new face joining the ranks of fellow Canadians in SCORE Baja racing making his SCORE debut at the SCORE Baja 400 will be Canada’s veteran Rally Racer Ken Stanick, 52, of North Vancouver, British Columbia.
Stanick, a veteran champion with over 30 rally races in Canada and North America in his rally career, will make his SCORE debut driving with an all-Canadian team in the No. 203 Brenthel-Chevy in the Trophy Truck Spec Class.
A graduate of the University of British Columbia and a prominent Canadian strategist and business consultant, Stanick also is an adventure sport athlete, playing hockey, or competitively paddling where he has competed in the US Kayak Championships, finished second in the Yukon Quest (the longest paddling event in the world), and the World Outrigger championships in Hawaii.
SCORE welcomes its international competitors and expects racers from as many as 10 countries for this race, including several from Canada.
CAFRO
A veteran of nearly 30 years of SCORE racing, champion racer and Polaris Factory racer Mike Cafro, 52, Temecula, Calif. (originally from Fallbrook, Calif.), has entered in the Pro UTV Open class in his No. 1876 Mike Cafro Racing (MCR) Polaris RZR Pro Turbo S.
His teammate and second driver is Jamie Kirkpatrick, 42, Olympia, Wash. as the duo has finished a solid second place on the podium in both races in 2022 to lead the point standings in their class.
Last year, Cafro and Kirkpatrick had an amazing season in the Pro UTV Stock class, going undefeated in four races, including the 2021 SCORE Baja 400, to win the season point title in a Polaris RZR Turbo S.
Cafro started racing with SCORE with his brother Carmen as his teammate and they had numerous class wins on three-wheel ATVs early in their careers and then Mike’s passion had him winning races and titles in domestic series across the U.S. on a four-wheel quad.
SEPTIEN
Another native of Mexico who is one of the top Mexican racers in SCORE Baja racing, Francisco Septien, 47, of Ensenada, has successfully raced on a motorcycle in SCORE Baja races for nearly two decades, clearly giving him the honorary title of ‘King’ of the Mexican SCORE Baja motorcycle racers.
He has been a Rider or Record or co-rider on nine SCORE season class point championship teams, including four where he was the Rider of Record. As the Rider of Record, Septien was the season title in Pro Moto 30 in 2010, in Pro Moto Limited in 2012, in Pro Moto Ironman in 2018 and again in Pro Moto 30 in 2020.
In Pro Moto Ironman in 2018, he won the class for solo riders by winning three races in finishing in second place in the fourth race.
He has entered the SCORE Baja 400 in Pro Moto Ironman in his No. 730x Honda CRF450X.
While business involvement kept him from running a full schedule last year and this year as well, he won the Pro Moto 30 class in the Inaugural SCORE Baja 400 in 2019.
MB MOTORSPORTS
With nearly three decades of winning SCORE races, Marc Burnett, 51, Chula Vista, Calif., drives the No. 2905 MB Motorsports Monster Energy Can-Am Maverick X3 in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in the SCORE World Desert Championship.
Burnett started racing motorcycles in SCORE in the mid-1990s, moved to mini-trucks and then to UTVs and he has earned a total of three SCORE season point crowns in his long and illustrious desert racing career and numerous race wins.
Burnett won his first SCORE season point championship in 1995 when he captured the old Class 20 for motorcycles under 125cc.
     Burnett started riding motorcycles for Factory Kawasaki, Honda and finally Team Suzuki. 
     He then moved on to racing Class 6 min-trucks where again he accomplished victories in the 2008 SCORE San Felipe 250, the 2008 SCORE Baja 1000 and in 2011 at the SCORE Baja 500.
     Originally, from Alpine, Calif., Burnett is one of the pioneer SCORE UTV racers, winning the season point titles in both the old Class 19 (Pro UTV NA-Naturally Aspirated) in 2014 and the Pro UTV FI class in 2017 where he finished the season by becoming the first solo UTV racer to finish a peninsular run from Ensenada to La Paz in the iconic SCORE Baja 1000.
     This season Burnett has finished in ninth and fourth place in his class and currently is fifth in the Pro UTV FI point standings, just eight points out of first place.
     In the first two SCORE Baja 400 races, Burnett finished second in 2019 and was a DNF last year.
     Burnett has also earned four prestigious Toyota Escondido Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards (2011, 2014, 2017, 2019) to date for completing every required mile of each of those race seasons.
In 1994, Burnett created the FreestyleMX motorcycle stunt show company and has presented hundreds of freestyle entertainment shows.
RISQ RACING
The Wells go deep in Utah and Risq Racing of Hurricane, Utah, is all about the Wells family racing team.
A two-generation desert racing team, family patriarch Travis Wells, 50, and his wife Libby, both of Apple Valley, Utah, own the Risq Racing race team than includes their sons Kaden Wells, 23 and Corbin Wells, 24, who lives in nearby Washington, Utah.
Travis Wells is husband/dad/brother, mechanic, vehicle builder and additional driver (when needed) and Libby Wells is the wife/mom/sister-in-law, team manager and logistics coordinator.
Also an active part of the family team is Travis’ brother Arnie Wells, 36, who lives in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Newest member of the team is Emma Cornwell, who is a navigator for Kaden Wells.
After three season class point titles in four years (2018, 2019, 2021) Kaden Wells will again be driving the No. 1995 Risq Racing Polaris RZR XP1000 in the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated)
So far in the 2022 SCORE season, Kaden Wells has a pair of third-place podium finishes and is currently second in the season points in his class.
In the SCORE Baja 400, Kaden Wells is undefeated after his two Pro UTV NA class wins in 2019 and 2021.
HAGLE BROS
They’re back! The Hagle Brothers are back as the reigning Class 10 season point champions in the SCORE World Desert Championship.
Ben Hagle is DOR this year.
Ethan Hagle, 29, Somis, Calif. and his brother Ben Hagle, 32, Somis, Calif., won Class 10 last year paired up for driving duties and won the last two races of the year to win their class and finished 10th in the 2021 SCORE Overall point standings. The brothers also won the 2021 Open Wheel Overall season point title. While Ethan Hagle was the driver of record last year, Ben is the DOR this season.
In the 2022 SCORE San Felipe 250 to open the season, the Hagle Brothers finished fourth out of 19 starters in Class 10, splitting the wheel time in their No. 1000 Hagle Lumber Alumi Craft-Chevy. In the SCORE Baja 500 they suffered a rare dnf and are currently 13th in the Class 10 season points out of 26 total racers.
In the SCORE Baja 400, the Hagle Brothers did not race in 2019 and won Class 10 in last year’s race.
& MRS. MATLOCK
After many championship seasons and race wins driving in separate classes, Wayne Matlock and his wife Kristen Matlock, of Alpine, Calif. are entered in the same class for the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Both are racing in the Pro UTV Open class in separate (but equal) new Polaris RZR Pro R UTVs. Each vehicle has a chassis built by TSCO in El Cajon, Calif. Wayne pilots the No. 1871 Polaris RZR Pro R UTV and Kristen is behind the wheel of the No. 1854 Polaris RZR Pro R UTV.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Wayne Matlock, 44, has five career class wins (2008, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016) including several in quads before moving to UTV classes.
Kristen Matlock, 41, who has been racing many far less years than her husband, has earned two UTV class wins in this race (2018 and 2020) in the Pro UTV NA.
In their simultaneous debut in the Pro UTV Open class in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Wayne Matlock was the fastest of all the UTVs in four classes including winning his class while Kristen Matlock finished in seventh place out of 10 starters in their class.
In this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Wayne Matlock suffered a dnf while Kristen finished in fourth place in their Pro UTV Open class. In the Pro UTV season points, Kristen Matlock is currently in fourth place while Wayne Matlock is in fifth.
GREEN FLAG
It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts with the green flag dropping on Saturday (Sept. 18). Ceremonial start in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center will be 5:30 a.m. PT for Motorcycles and Quads and 9:15 a.m. PT for the Cars, Trucks and UTVs. here will be a minimum of three and one-half hours between the last SPT Quad and the first SCORE Trophy Truck.
Car, Truck and UTV classes will have a course of 393.82 miles while motorcycle and quad classes will have a race course of approximately 370 miles. All classes will have a time limit of 19 hours from the time each vehicle starters to become an official finisher in the race.
TV
The race will air domestically on a delayed basis as a one-hour special on the World of X Games program on ESPN2 and will be syndicated internationally to nearly 25 countries in Europe, Latin America, South America and Asia. Co-producing the shows with SCORE is the award-winning BCII TV of Los Angeles led by executive producer Bud Brutsman.
START GRID-SCORE BAJA 1000
The results of the SCORE Baja 400 also will determine the start order within each class for November’s iconic season-ending BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts.
DRAW DEADLINE
The starting order within each class for this race (except for the classes that are qualifying), will be determined by a random drawing for those entries received online and paid in full by 5 p.m. (PDT) on Wednesday, August 31.
No additional online entries will be accepted after 5 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, August 31.
Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Sept. 13-16).
In person registration is also being held in the SCORE Ensenada office until 5 p.m. PDT on Thursday, Sept. 8.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 393.82-mile race course for this year’s 3rd SCORE Baja 400 will open at 8 a.m. PDT on Saturday, Sept. 3. Pre-running will start at race mile 33.14. The first 33.14 miles, which will be used in both directions during the race, will be available for pre-running only on Thursday (Sept. 15) and Friday (Sept. 16) and only in the outbound direction.
QUALIFYING
     Qualifying for starting positions within their respective classes will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 14), starting at 8 a.m. PDT. Classes that will be qualifying for the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 are SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend, the unlimited Class 1 and the Trophy Truck Spec class.
MAIN COURSE
The race will feature a course, designed and plotted by SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva, of 393.82 miles of rugged Baja California terrain (370 for motorcycles and quads).
The challenging race course will be another memorable example of all that Mexico’s Baja California has to offer, including high-speed dirt trails, sandy, rocky and silty natural terrain, majestic Baja washes and canyons, stretches along the seashore with elevations from sea level to 4,972 feet. The course will be another jewel reflecting the stark beauty of Baja California.
It will run in a clockwise direction from Ensenada and back with two physical, full-stop checkpoints and 170 virtual checkpoints. The two physical checkpoints will be: Checkpoint 1 at Ejido Jaramillo at race mile 233.64 and Checpoint 2 will be at Santo Tomas at rm312.63.
A HAPPENING…
Colorful race week festivities will start on Tuesday, Sept. 13 to help celebrate this youngest SCORE Baja race. They will be held in or adjacent to the landmark Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
Chassis inspections and pre-tech/Stella devise check and installation will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 14) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT by appointment and on Thursday (Sept. 15) chassis inspection/pre-tech/Stella bracket check and installation will be held at a location to be determined.
Friday (Sept. 16) will see the colorful day-long, pre-race Manufacturer’s Midway and contingency festival in the start finish line area in Ensenada. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT contingency row will be held for all classes. Tech inspection/Transponder checks/Stella/SPICA device pickup will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. PDT on Friday as well at the end of the manufacturer’s row.
During the race on Saturday, Sept. 17 until the course closes on Sunday morning, Sept. 18, the start/finish line compound will include the massive double-sided SCOREvision LED screen broadcasting race festivities, the start, live race action from around the course and finish line interviews.
Popular Rat Sult will once again serve as host of the SCORE Live streaming. Assisting Sult will be veteran voice Dave Arnold.
Contingency and the race itself will be streamed live, airing via the internet on the SCORE website. Included in the exclusive race coverage, along with vehicle tracking, will be live drone and in-car camera footage from various locations around the race course.
AT THE RIVIERA…
The historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, in the heart of Ensenada, will again be the site of many of the activities surrounding the 3rd SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels. Racer registration and media registration will both be held in Salon Rojo on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Sept. 13-16).
On Tuesday (Sept. 13 for qualifying teams only) racer registration will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PDT. On Wednesday (Sept. 14) it will run from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. PDT, Thursday (Sept. 15) it will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT and on Friday (Sept. 16) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, no new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. PDT, on Thursday after 4 p.m. PDT and on Friday, no new entries will be accepted after 3 p.m. PDT.
SCORE Media Registration will be held in Salon Rojo at the Riviera on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 13-14) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. PDT and on Thursday and Friday (Sept. 15-16) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PDT.
The start/finish line for the race will once again be adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Blvd. Costero.
LeDUC, GRAND MARSHAL
Adding to the glamour of the SCORE Baja 400, Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Class of 2015 inductee Curt LeDuc, and SCORE champion truck racer has been named as the Grand Marshal for this year’s race.
Passionate to a flair with racing champion sons Todd LeDuc and Kyle LeDuc, Curt LeDuc, 67, of Cherry Valley, Calif., has been a winner in desert racing, short course racing, the Dakar Rally, the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb and elder LeDuc is like the energizer bunny…he’s still going, going and going.
Building most of the vehicles he raced in, many would call LeDuc an engineer, but he prefers to be referenced as an ‘imagineer’ for his mechanical acumen.
LeDuc has had a strong career in SCORE and has four career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins and he won the 1997 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship driving a factory-sponsored Jeep Cherokee.

ESPN TV NETWORKS AGAIN IN 2022
For the fourth straight year, the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship races are airing on the ESPN family of networks. The four-races are airing as specials on the World of X Games program on ESPN2.
ABC first covered the 1967 and 1968 Baja 1000 races on the old ABC Wide World of Sports show with Jim McKay and again in the late 1980s with veteran motorsports journalists Sam Posey and Jack Arute.
All of the SCORE race coverage shows also continue to air internationally in nearly 25 countries in Euro/pe, Asia, Latin America and South America via syndication and ESPN International.
