THE POINT IS…
While many of the entries are not in the hunt for a class championship but rather to be enraptured by the pure joy, beauty and adrenalin of competing in this legendary race, most of the racers are diligently trying to earn a SCORE season class point title at the SCORE Baja 1000.
OVERALL POINTS LEADER
SoCal’s youthful dynamo Christopher Polvoorde, 21, continues to lead the SCORE Overall point standings and the massive Trophy Truck Spec class as well following his stunning season-opening class victory at the King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250, a solid fourth-place class finish in the BFGoodrich Tires 54th SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4 Wheel Parts and another surprising first place in the SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels.
Driving the No. 204 CP Racing Optima Batteries Mason Motorsports-Ford, Polvoorde has earned 379 points so far in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship.
SCORE TROPHY TRUCK LEADER
With the baby-face looks of a movie star and the heart of a lion, San Diego’s third-generation desert racer Luke McMillin, 29, has roared his way to the top of the leaderboard in the SCORE Trophy Truck division. With a first-place finish in the SCORE San Felipe 250, a sixth place in the SCORE Baja 500 and a second-place in the recent SCORE Baja 400, L. McMillin is tied for second in the SCORE Overall point standings.
The youngest of the current active McMillin racers, Luke McMillin leads the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks with 365 points in his McMillin Racing No. 83 4 Wheel Parts All Wheel Drive Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports.
Luke McMillin has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins and will be going for a threepeat in this year’s BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts, with Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren as his second driver. McMillin won last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 as the second driver for MacCachren and in 2020 he won the iconic race with Larry Roeseler as his additional driver.
McMillin has announced that MacCachren will be his second driver in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 in his No. 83 Chevy truck. Last year, McMillin allowed MacCachren to run his No. 11 on McMillin’s truck and with the victory helped earn MacCachren the 2021 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship.
TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS
Behind Polvoorde in first and Luke McMillin tied for second, also in the top five SCORE Overall point leaders three quarters of the way through the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship is tied for second place Jorge Sampietro, Ensenada, Mexico, No. 297 Mason-Chevy (Trophy Truck Spec) with 365 points, while fourth place is Rob MacCachren, No. 1 Ford F-150 (Geiser, SCORE Trophy Truck) with 353 points and fifth is Mason Cullen, Long Beach, Calif., No. 207 Geiser-Chevy (Trophy Truck Spec) with 352 points.
SALVATIERRA LEADS PRO MOTO OVERALL
After winning the season point championship for two consecutive years in the brutally tough Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, Bolivia’s acclaimed Juan Carlos Salvatierra moved to the Pro Moto Unlimited class this year and has won the fastest class on two wheels in all three of his first attempts in this legendary class.
Salvatierra, 41, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, has raced nine years in the Dakar Rally, also mountain biking and triathlons. Considered the most important athlete in the history of Bolivia, in 2011, Salvatierra became the first athlete from Bolivia to race in the Dakar Rally. He is also a nine-time Bolivian National Motocross champion.
He capped his incredible 2021 season by riding solo in the 54th SCORE Baja 1000 to a winning tedious time of 34 hours, 39 minutes, 13 seconds over the brutally-tough 1226.35-mile race course.
TIE & SUPER-TIGHT CLASS BATTLES
Helping reflect the intensity of the raging battles in many of the SCORE competition classes, one classhas two racers tied at the top of their leaderboard. Further, one class is separated by one point, two classes have first and second separated by just five points and four more classes have the top two racers with just six points between each heading into the season finale.
The class tied after three of four 2022 races is Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction). That class also has third place just two points back and third place is only four points behind the co-leaders heading into the SCORE Baja 1000.
With one point separating the top two leaders is Class 10 while with five points between first and second place so far are Class 1 and Class 7F while with just six points between the top two racers are Class 7, SCORE Lites, Pro Moto 50 (riders over 50) and Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders).
TIED ON TOP OF ALL UTVs
Tied with 335 points each at the top of all Pro UTV classes as well as their own Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class are Wes Miller and Edgar Garcia Leon.
Las Vegas’ Miller has consistent finishes of sixth in the SCORE San Felipe 250, fifth in the SCORE Baja 500 and third in the SCORE Baja 400 in his No. 2989 Polaris RZR XP Turbo while Garcia Leon, Trabuco Canyon, Calif., finished second, eighth and seventh in his No. 2987 Can-Am Maverick X3 in the first three races of the year.
Justin Lambert, Bakersfield, Calif., won in San Felipe finished 14th and then ninth in his No. 2918 Polaris RZR XP4 Turbo S and is two points behind the leaders. Just four points behind the co-leaders entering the season finale is Matt Burroughs, Norco, Calif. after finishes of fourth, ninth and fourth in his No. 2948 Can-Am X3.
In San Felipe Pro UTV FI had 29 starters and in Ensenada, the popular UTV class saw 24 vehicles take the green flag in June and then 23 in September.
There were a total of 38 starters in the five UTV classes in the most recent SCORE Baja 400.
SCORE TT LEGEND
Mexico’s veteran SCORE champion Gustavo Vildosola Sr is leading the points in SCORE TT Legend (drivers over 50 years old) following his three season-opening victories in San Felipe and Ensenada. Vildosola Sr, 68, Mexicali, won the SCORE TT Legend season point championship in 2018 with Scott Bailey as a second driver.
He has won all three races so far this year with help from legendary racer Ricky Johnson, 57, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. who drovs the first half of each race in the Vildosola Racing No. 21L AWD Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.
Vildosola Sr also has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in his illustrious career in SCORE desert racing.

Including Polvoorde in Trophy Truck Spec, Luke McMillin in SCORE Trophy Truck, Miller and Garcia Leon in Pro UTV FI, five classes have at least one racer in the top 25 SCORE Overall 4-wheel point standings following Round 3 of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship.

David Ruvalcaba, leads his class and is 16th overall after a sixth place in his class of 19 starters in San Felipe and 11th place out of 26 starters in Ensenada in June and winning Class 10 out of 18 starters in Ensenada in September in his No. 1009 Alumi Craft-Honda open-wheel desert race car.
The fifth class with at least one racer in the top 25 in overall points is Mexico’s Gustavo Vildosola Sr who leads the SCORE TT Legend class (SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old). Vildosola, with second-driver Ricky Johnson, El Cajon, Calif., have won their class in all three races this year in their No. 21L Ford Raptor (Mason).
