    ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, latest early entries for the upcoming season-opening King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250, fueled by Baja Vida, include Tanner Janesky, his father Larry Janesky, Brad Wilson, Kyle Quinn, Daniel Chamlee, from Southern California, Dan Myers, Andrew Myers, Britney Myers/Tamara Myers, Eric Solorzano, Brendan Gaughan, Juan C. Lopez, his daughter Jessica Lopez/his son Alexis, Juan Carlos Salvatierra, Kaden Wells, Brad Wright, Fabricio Fuentes, Jorge Sampietro, Ryan Liebelt and Mike Cafro.

     Round 1 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held March 28-April 2 in the quaint, peaceful village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

     Pre-race Contingency and Tech Inspection and the start/finish line compound will be located on the picturesque El Malecon in San Felipe along the inspiring azure waters of the Sea of Cortez.

     San Felipe is 125 miles south of the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif. on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez. All four 2023 SCORE races will be held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.

     With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line to launch the 50th season of SCORE desert racing, 134 total early entries have been received so far for the popular ‘Spring Break’ event, with racers representing 23 U.S. States, and 11 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, New Zealand, and Peru.

     With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 26, Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 33, Pro UTV Open (10) and Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 10.

     Among the earliest entries for this year’s race are son and father from Middlebury, Conn. Tanner Janesky (Pro Moto Ironman), Larry Janesky (Pro UTV NA and SPT Motorcycle), Wilson Motorsports teammates Brad Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 1) and Kyle Quinn, Lakeside, Calif. (Class 1), Daniel Chamlee, San Felipe, Mexico (Montecito, Calif.) (Class 7), Dan Myers, Newport Beach, Calif. (SCORE Trophy Truck), his brother Andrew Myers, San Marcos, Calif.      Celebrating the 36th anniversary of the youngest of the three legendary SCORE Baja races, sometimes referred to as the SCORE ‘Baby Baja’, entries are being accepted on the SCORE website under Race Info at https://score-international.com/raceinfo/2023-san-felipe-250-march-28-april-2-2023/ for Pro and Sportsman entries for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.

     The deadline to enter in time to be included in the SCORE San Felipe 250 Race Day program is 5 p.m. PT on Friday March 10.

     The deadline to apply online and be included in the drawing for starting positions within each class is 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 16. Starting positions for the classes that aren’t qualifying will be determined by a random drawing after the close of online racer registration. Results of the start draw will be posted on the SCORE website by 6 p.m. PT on Friday, March 17.

     Late entries may register in person at the SCORE Ensenada office will have until 5 p.m. PT on Friday, March 24. Those late entries, however, will not be included in the start draw.

     Late, on-site entries will receive the next starting position within the class entered.

     For just the fourth time in the history of this popular ‘Spring Break’ race, SCORE will hold a qualifying session starting at 7 a.m. PT on Wednesday, March 29 to determine the starting positions within each class for the SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes. The starting order for qualifying in each class will be the order in which they entered the race.

     Entries received in the qualifying classes received after Friday, March 24 will be given then next available starting slot within their respective classes.

     Start order for qualifying will be determined by the date and time that they are received.

     Qualifying is not open to the public and will be held on an approximately five-mile course that is not part of the official race course.

     Lawrence Janesky is a successful businessman from Middlebury, Connecticut, who started riding dirt bikes late at age 32 with his brother. When his son Tanner turned five, Lawrence got him on a dirt bike and the two have been riding together ever since. Years later, after touring in Utah, South Africa, and Columbia, the two decided to tour with Chris Haines Baja Motorcycle Adventure Tours where they first learned about the SCORE Baja 1000. The two later teamed up with the Hall of Famer Haines as their team manager and raced their first SCORE Baja 1000 in 2015, winning the Sportsman Motorcycle Class.

     From that humble start, Lawrence and his son Tanner quickly morphed into racing several times in the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, especially attempting to finish the iconic SCORE Baja 1000.

     What evolved from their inspirational efforts were four separate memorable You Tube documentaries: Into the Dust, Into the Dust2, Into the Dust3 and Into the Dust4 which have had over four million views.

     Lawrence Janesky, 58, has entered in two classes for the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250, Pro UTV NA in the No. 1914 Honda Talon and the Sportsman Motorcycle class as the rider of record on the No. 214x Honda CRF450X. For both entries, he has recruited several racers from Connecticut and one from Tennessee.

     Tanner Janesky, 28, whose schedule hasn’t allowed him to race as frequently as his father in SCORE races, has entered San Felipe in the Pro Moto Ironman class on his No. 775x KTM 450XCF-W.

     The younger Janesky is coming off of last year’s monumental Pro Moto Ironman victory over 20 starters in his class in the iconic SCORE Baja 1000. Despite stopping for nearly one hour to assist injured rider Giovanni Spinali, Tanner still earned the incredible class victory with a time-credit for when he was off the motorcycle.

     Tanner Janesky also finished second in Pro Moto Ironman in the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000.

     Lawrence Janesky has three recent finishes in the SCORE San Felipe 250, seventh in Pro Moto Ironman in 2018, sixth in Pro Moto Unlimited in 2019 and seventh in Pro Moto Ironman in 2022.

    One of numerous prolific third-generation desert racing teams competing with SCORE, Wilson Motorsports has once again entered two race cars in the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars. Both race cars are Chevy-powered Jimco vehicles.

     Brad Wilson, 33, of Long Beach, Calif., is the driver of record for the No. 153 race car while long-time additional driver Kyle Quinn, 35, Lakewood, Calif. is the driver of record again this year with SCORE in the No. 100 Wilson Motorsports race car.

     For many years a second driver for the wonderful Wilson Motorsports team, Kyle Quinn, 34, Long Beach, Calif., stepped into the lead driver position in one of the team’s entries this year and won the unlimited Class 1 at the SCORE San Felipe 250 in the No. 138 Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.

     With regular DOR Brian Wilson not available for all races in 2022, Quinn took the lead and shared driving duties in San Felipe with Brian Wilson’s uncle Ronny Wilson, 60 of Long Beach, Calif. At the SCORE Baja 400, with Brian Wilson’s cousin Brad Wilson as the second driver, Quinn finished on the podium in third place again and took the lead in Class 1. At the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000, Quinn won Class 1 with Ronny Wilson and Greg DiStefano as his driving mates to earn the season point title and finish 22nd in the SCORE Overall Season points.

     In last year’s King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250, Wilson Motorsports claimed two of the podium positions in the unlimited Class 1. Quinn teamed with Brad’s father Ronny Wilson, 60, also of Long Beach, Calif., to win the Class 1 over 10 starters in the class for unlimited open-wheel cars and Brad Wilson finished in third place.

     In the 2022 June’s SCORE Baja 500, Quinn finished on the podium in third with Ronny Wilson while Brad Wilson finished sixth in class.

     In last September’s SCORE Baja 400, Quinn/R. Wilson stayed consistent with their third straight podium, finishing in third place in Class 1 while Brad Wilson was the victim of equipment failure.

     Brad Wilson finished third in the final point standings for the class for unlimited open-wheel desert race cars despite enduring DNFs the final two race of 2022.

     Ronny Wilson has four career Class 1 race wins in San Felipe (1999, 2009, 2016, 2022).

      Veteran SCORE champion Daniel Chamlee, 60, of Montecito, Calif., who now lives mostly in San Felipe, has entered again in Class 7 in his No. 700 The Factory Racing Ford Ranger.

     Chamlee has driven consistently to earn 18 SCORE Class 7 season point championships in the last 19 years.

     In last year’s season-opener in San Felipe, Chamlee was on the podium again, finishing third in Class 7. In June’s SCORE Baja 500, Chamlee earned another Class 7 victory to add to his legacy and in September he earned his third consecutive victory in the three-year old SCORE Baja 400. He capped his 2022 championship season with another podium finish, third place.

     In his career has also earned eight Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, for racers who complete every required mile for that season.

     Another second and third generation SCORE race team, Myers racing returned to SCORE in 2021 after an absence for several years. The famous SoCal racing family is back in a major way with four family members in three family entries, two in SCORE Trophy Truck and one in Class 10. All three are part of the Toyota Escondido TE Motorsports Team.

     Dan Myers, 44, Newport Beach, Calif., will be driver of record in SCORE Trophy Truck while his younger brother Andrew Myers, 43 of San Marcos will be in another SCORE Trophy Truck and their nieces Britney Myers, 26, and Tamara Myers, 28, of Newport Beach, Calif., are racing together.

     Dan and Andrew’s older brother Steve Myers, 56 of Newport Beach, is waiting for a third SCORE Trophy Truck to be finished but will be available again as an additional driver for Dan Myers.

     Dan Myers will be racing in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 6 TE Motorsports Toyota Tundra built by SCORE racer Robby Gordon while Andrew Myers will drive in SCORE Trophy Truck in his No. 69 Toyota Tundra built by Herbst-Smith Fab and the Myers Girls will split the driving in their No. 1023 Jimco-Chevy.

     A second-generation SCORE race team, Dan and Andrew have all had their share of race wins in SCORE racing over the years as they prepare to continue this new Myers family adventure.

     Dan Myers was sixth in points out of 44 racers in SCORE Trophy Truck last year, finishing all four raceswith a season-high 10th place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000. Andrew Myers only raced in last year’s SCORE Baja 400 where he was a DNF.

     The biggest Myers family SCORE class win was in 2000 when Steve Myers was the driver of record and split the driving with his brothers Dan and Andrew to win Class 10 in the epic new millennium race of nearly 1,700 miles that started in Ensenada and finished in Cabo San Lucas.

     Andrew was away from desert racing for the most part for nearly a decade as he pursued a NASCAR stock car racing career. During his NASCAR years he competed in the Truck Series, the ARCA Series as well as both the NASCAR Pro Series West and the NASCAR Pro Series East.

     Eric Solorzano is a legendary Mexican racer who has risen from humble beginnings as an orphan in Tijuana to becoming the winningest Mexican national in SCORE racing history.

     Solorzano, 62, was also part of the Class of 2022 to be inducted into the prestigious Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.

     He started racing off-road on motorcycles in local races around Tijuana in 1974 and continued until 1988 when he decided to trade two wheels for four after an injury so he could continue racing.

     He bought his first VW Bug in 1989. His first race was in 1991. He still owns, and races, the same car, more than 30 years later. 

     Solorzano competes in Class 11, the stock VW class. He first competed in the Mexican Record Series and later SCORE. In SCORE racing, Solorzano has won 11 SCORE season point championships in his No. 1111 VW Sedan and still competes to this day.

     A husband and father of eight, Solorzano also has 11 class wins in the SCORE San Felipe 250, nine in the SCORE Baja 1000 and seven in the SCORE Baja 500.

     His thousands of fans in Mexico view him as an inspiration for what hard work and preparation can do for a person.

     Prominent Las Vegas businessman, former NASCAR star and second-generation desert racer Brendan Gaughan has returned his desert racing roots again as he has entered the unlimited Class 1 for this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.

     The gregarious and very personable Gaughan, 47, is a veteran of 23 years of driving in NASCAR’s three elite division including the top tier Cup Series along with the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Truck Series.

     In 2019 Gaughan returned to his roots for an emotional Class 1 victory in the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Also driving that race with Gaughan were R.J. Anderson, Buddy Feldkamp and Billy Gereghty.

     Driving South Point Hotel/Casino (Las Vegas) vehicles, Gaughan had 67 starts over nine seasons in the Cup series, 219 starts over 10 seasons in the Xfinity series and 217 in the Truck series over 14 seasons. He retired from NASCAR racing officially after the 2020 season.

     Gaughan, who also is a part of numerous national radio programs, is the son of legendary Las Vegas hotel/casino magnate and former SCORE champion and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Michael Gaughan.

     Owner of City Light Shine (17A distillery) in Las Vegas, Gaughan will be the driver of record in the No. 162 South Point Hotel HMS-Chevy. Gaughan is also an administrative executive at the South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.

     CLS (produced by 17A Stillery) is the first and only legal distillery in the history of Las Vegas.

     Gaughan was plagued with issues last year of various kinds and had four very unfortunate DNFs.

     One of the most prominent racing families in all of Mexico, Juan C. Lopez and two of his children, one son and one daughter, have entered this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250. They are entered in two separate classes.

    All from Tecate, Mexico, Juan C. Lopez, 48, will drive the No. 226 Curry-Ford in the Trophy Truck Spec class in San Felipe.

     Jessica Lopez, 19, is the driver of record in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in the No. 2996 Can-Am Maverick X3.  Second driver will be Jessica’s brother Alexis, 23.

    While the two siblings are still learning the skills for SCORE, Juan C. Lopez has several SCORE class wins, including Class 8 in the 2010 SCORE San Felipe 250.

    Juan C. Lopez also has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, including 2017 as the second driver for his eldest son Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez when the father/son team won the iconic 50th SCORE Baja 1000 that was a peninsula run from Ensenada to La Paz.

    After winning the season point championship for two consecutive years in the brutally tough Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, Bolivia’s acclaimed Juan Carlos Salvatierra moved to the Pro Moto Unlimited class last year and won the fastest class on two wheels in his first three attempts in this legendary class. He capped his stellar season with a third-place podium finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.

     In San Felipe, his co-riders were Mexico’s Arturo Salas Jr, 19, and Shane Logan, 20, Lake Havasu City, Ariz. For the SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Salvatierra added Argentinian rally racer Diego Llanos to his team for his second straight class win. Winning the Pro Moto Unlimited season point title in 2022, ‘Chavo’ will lead his team on his No. 1x KTM 450SX-F motorcycle.

     At the SCORE Baja 500, Salvatierra and his team gave KTM its first overall moto win in the 54-year history of the iconic race.

     Salvatierra’s team for both the SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000 were Salas Jr, Logan and newcomer Clayton Roberts, 20, Apple Valley, Calif.

     Salvatierra, 42, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, raced nine years in the Dakar Rally, also mountain biking and triathlons. Considered the most important athlete in the history of Bolivia, in 2011, Salvatierra became the first athlete from Bolivia to race in the Dakar Rally. He is also a nine-time Bolivian National Motocross champion.

     The Wells go deep in Utah and Risq Racing of Hurricane, Utah, is all about the Wells family racing team.

     A two-generation desert racing team, family patriarch Travis Wells, and his wife Libby, both of Apple Valley, Utah, own the Risq Racing race team than includes their son Kaden Wells, 24, Hurricane, Utah.

     Emma Cornwell, is the navigator for Kaden Wells.

     After four season class point titles in five years (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) Kaden Wells in the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class, is moving up to the Pro UTV Open class in 2023 and will be driving the team’s new No. 1895 Risq Racing Polaris RZR Pro R.

     In the 2022 SCORE season, Wells had a pair of third-place podium finishes followed by a pair of class wins to secure his fourth season point championship.

     In the SCORE San Felipe 250, is looking for his first class win in 2023.

     Following several seasons co-rider on winning Pro motorcycle age group classes, Brandon Wright, 46, Oak Hills, Calif. not only won the Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) class in last year’s King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 over 10 starters in his class, he won the season championship in his class and earned the 2022 SCORE Overall Motorcycle title as well with second-place finishes in the second and third SCORE Baja races and a third place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 out of 20 starters this year.

     Wright rode the No. 750x Husqvarna FE501 motorcycle.

     At the finish line in San Felipe, the victorious Wright said following his first SCORE Pro Ironman win, “It was really rough the whole way. I did pretty-well for most of the time and was just trying to decide what pace to keep as I wasn’t sure where my competition was at. I was just trying to stay comfortable and everything was going well until about 15 miles to the finish when the whoops finally hit me. I thought I was done. I was just on survival mode at that point. But I made it. And I won my class!”

     After a pre-running accident for the SCORE Baja 1000 caused him to withdraw from the race, he later decided (with approval from his doctor) to re-enter the race and he courageously battled to a podium finish to earn his two crowns.

     Still a relative newcomer to SCORE racing, Fabricio Fuentes, 46, is a highly accomplished and well-known motorcycle racer from Villa Montes, Bolivia. The affable Fuentes, known for his trademark special Bolivian Sombrero he wears at the races, is a six-time Dakar Rally veteran. In his last Dakar, he was the 39th overall motorcycle in the legendary Rally.

     Fuentes is also a multi-time national motorcycle champion in Bolivia and has remained in the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders even though his compatriot Salvatierra switched last year to the Pro Moto Unlimited class after two years competing in the same class.

     Fuentes finished second in the 2021 SCORE Pro Moto Ironman class point standings and was also second to Bolivian teammate Salvatierra in the 2021 SCORE Baja 400.

     In the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250, Fuentes rides the No. 785x Gas Gas EC350F motorcycle.

     In 2022, Fuentes is fifth in the Pro Moto Ironman season point standings following a third-place podium finish in San Felipe, a rare did-not-finish (DNF) in the SCORE Baja 500, another third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400 and a fourth place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.

     Following a very tough campaign in 2022, Jorge Sampietro enters the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship as the defending season point champion in the extremely competitive Trophy Truck Spec class.

     Sampietro, 32, of Ensenada, Mexico with roots in Argentina, overcame every obstacle in 2022 to win his second career season crown in that class. He raced against 52 different racers in Trophy Truck Spec with his only class win being at the SCORE Baja 500 over 32 starters in his class.

     In what was a major battle of attrition in his class, Sampietro also finished third out of 24 starters in the SCORE Baja 400, but struggled with a seventh place in last year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 and a 14th in the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.

     He will again be driving his No. 297 JS Racing Mason-Chevy in 2023 in the Trophy Truck Spec class.

     Among the newer SCORE motorcycle racers, Ryan Liebelt, 42, of Reedley, Calif., is shifting gears in 2023 and has moved up a notch and will be the rider of record in the Pro Moto Unlimited class.

     Previously Liebelt has overseen championship age group teams and was undefeated as Rider of Record in Pro Moto 40 in 2021 and 2022 and was also first in Pro Moto 30 as a co-rider for Greg Bardonnex, 46, of Visalia, Calif. in 2021.

     In the 2019 SCORE Baja 400, Liebelt finished third in Pro Moto 30 and in 2021 and 2022 he won Pro Moto 40 as the ROR and was on Bardonnex’s winning team in Pro Moto 30 in 2019 as a co-rider.

     Liebelt won eight straight Pro Moto 40 races to earn the season point title in his class the last two years straight. He has three straight race wins in the SCORE San Felipe 250 (2019, 2021, 2022) as this race was not held in 2020 because of the world-wide health pandemic.

     A veteran of nearly 30 years of SCORE racing, champion racer and Polaris Factory racer Mike Cafro, 53, Temecula, Calif. (originally from Fallbrook, Calif.), is entered again in the Pro UTV Open class in his No. 1876 Mike Cafro Racing (MCR) Polaris RZR Pro R.

     His teammate and second driver is Jamie Kirkpatrick, 42, Olympia, Wash. as the duo finished a solid second place on the podium in two races in 2022, won at the SCORE Baja 400 and finished fifth in class in the SCORE Baja 1000 to capture the season point champion in their first season in their new class.

     In 2021, Cafro and Kirkpatrick had an amazing season in the Pro UTV Stock class, going undefeated in all four races, to win the season point title in a Polaris RZR Turbo S.

     Cafro started racing with SCORE with his brother Carmen as his teammate and they had numerous class wins on three-wheel ATVs early in their careers and then Mike’s passion had him winning races and titles in domestic series across the U.S. on a four-wheel quad.

     In addition to his second place class finish last the SCORE San Felipe 250, Cafro has four career class wins in this SCORE race (2002, 2007, 2014, 2021).

     Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing, has agreed to be the Grand Marshal for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship as SCORE is ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Desert Racing Excellence.’

     Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 on May 2, is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.

     His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.
