ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, latest entries for this month’s season-opening King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250, fueled by Baja Vida, include J. David Ruvalcaba, Arthur Penner, Cody Parkhouse/Brian Parkhouse, Faelly Lopez, Matt Burroughs, Kelana Humphrey, Austin Weiland, Brock Heger, Cayden MacCachren, Craig Scanlon, Derek Ausserbauer, and Branden Sims.
Round 1 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held March 28-April 2 on a 262.80-mile race course in and around the quaint, peaceful village of San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.
Pre-race Contingency and Tech Inspection and the start/finish line compound will be located on the picturesque El Malecon in San Felipe along the inspiring azure waters of the Sea of Cortez.
San Felipe is 125 miles south of the U.S. Border at Calexico, Calif. on the eastern side of the Baja peninsula along the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez. All four 2023 SCORE races will be held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
BY THE NUMBERS
With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line to launch the 50th season of SCORE desert racing, 218 total entries have been received so far for the popular ‘Spring Break’ event, with racers representing 26 U.S. States, and 12 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Denmark, France, Indonesia, Ireland, New Zealand, and Peru.
DOUBLE DIGITS
With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 31, Trophy Truck Spec (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 38, Class 10 (13), Pro UTV Open (17), Pro UTV FI (18), Pro UTV Stock (10) and Pro Moto Ironman (solo riders) with 17.

THREE DECADES-PLUS
Celebrating the 36th anniversary of the youngest of the three legendary SCORE Baja races, sometimes referred to as the SCORE ‘Baby Baja’, entries are being accepted on the SCORE website under Race Info at https://score-international.com/raceinfo/2023-san-felipe-250-march-28-april-2-2023/ for Pro and Sportsman entries for cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.
ENTRY DEADLINES
The deadline to apply online and be included in the drawing for starting positions within each class is 5 p.m. PT on Thursday, March 16. Starting positions for the classes that aren’t qualifying will be determined by a random drawing after the close of online racer registration. Results of the start draw will be posted on the SCORE website by 6 p.m. PT on Friday, March 17.
Late entries may register in person at the SCORE Ensenada office will have until 5 p.m. PT on Friday, March 24. Those late entries, however, will not be included in the start draw.
Late, on-site entries will receive the next starting position within the class entered.

PRE-RUNNING
Pre-running on the official 262.80-mile race course opens at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday (March 18). Pre-running starts at race-mile .63 and it is a shared course outbound/inbound to rm2.07.
This year’s race course runs in a counter-clockwise direction with one physical checkpoint near Morelia Junction. Motorcycle and quad classes have two deviations to the overall race course, but all vehicles will run the exact same total mileage.
QUALIFYING
For just the fourth time in the history of this popular ‘Spring Break’ race, SCORE will hold a qualifying session starting at 7 a.m. PT on Wednesday, March 29 to determine the starting positions within each class for the SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE TT Legend and Trophy Truck Spec classes. The starting order for qualifying in each class will be the order in which they entered the race.
Entries received in the qualifying classes received after Friday, March 24 will be given then next available starting slot within their respective classes.
Start order for qualifying will be determined by the date and time that they are received.
Qualifying is not open to the public and will be held on an approximately five-mile course that is not part of the official race course.
Mexico's J. David Ruvalcaba, of Ensenada who won Class 10 in 2022, was also the 2022 SCORE Overall Open-Wheel point champion and was eighth in overall points.
A former SCORE motorcycle champion racer, Ruvalcaba was sixth place last year in his class of 19 starters in San Felipe and 11th place out of 26 starters in Ensenada in June, won Class 10 out of 18 starters in Ensenada in September and was third in Ensenada in November out of 23 starters in his No. 1009 Alumi Craft-Honda open-wheel desert race car. As reigning class point champion, his vehicle this year will carry the No. 1000.
His primary second driver was Esteban Cruz, also of Ensenada. The Lomitas Racing Team picked up their fourth SCORE season class point crown in 2022 (2000, 2001, 2019, 2022).
They won on motorcycles the first two times, in Class 1/2-1600 in 2019 and Class 10 in 2022.
OH, CANADA
Unable to enter the United States for over two years because of the global health pandemic, Canada’s Arthur Penner is returned to San Felipe in 2022 for the first time since 2019.
Obviously, he is bringing with him down to Mexico his No. 1156 sturdy stock VW sedan to race in the romanticized Class 11 for the class that helped introduce the sport of desert racing.
Penner will hope to regain the touch he had in his previous three visits to the SCORE San Felipe 250 when he won Class 11 in dominating fashion in both 2018 and 2019 and finished on the podium again in third place in 2022.
Proceeds from his SCORE racing efforts go to help support Missions Network International which operates the Mount of Olives Children’s Village in Ejido Uruapan, Baja California, Mexico.
PARKHOUSE PAIR
A two-generation race team, veteran 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship Class 1 season point champs Cody Parkhouse and his father Brian Parkhouse are trying to earn another SCORE San Felipe 250 class victory.
Fresh out of high school at the time, Cody Parkhouse started his official desert racing career in 2006 racing in Class 1/2-1600.
Both from Long Beach, Calif., Brian Parkhouse, 63, and his son Cody Parkhouse, 35, teamed up to win both of the 2020 SCORE Baja races and won one race in 2021 in their No. 127 Parkhouse Motorsports Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car for their second straight Class 1 season title.
With driving help from his father, Cody Parkhouse has won four SCORE unlimited Class 1 season point championships. The duo won the SCORE season crowns in 2012, 2013, 2020 and 2021.
In San Felipe last year, the Parkhouse team endured a rare DNF. They followed that up with a second place in the SCORE Baja 500 and they won Class 1 in September’s SCORE Baja 400.
In the SCORE San Felipe 250, the son/father tandem won Class 1 in 2013.
Injured seriously in a race accident in the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000, Cody Parkhouse has clearly returned to his championship form and will be one of the racers to beat in Class 1 in San Felipe.
EL NOVATO NO MAS
From San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, strongman Faelly Lopez was voted the 2022 SCORE Rookie of the Year in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship and he was competing in just the first full season of the Pro Quad Ironman class for solo riders.
Lopez, 39, started 2022 by winning his class in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 on his No. 83a Honda TRX450R. The ‘Puerto Rican Force’ covered the 277.00-mile race course in 9:47:10.
After not being able to finish his first SCORE race at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 that went down the peninsula from Ensenada to La Paz, Lopez recovered and won SCORE’s newest class in 2022 in the first three 2022 SCORE races and eventually won SCORE Pro Quad Ironman season point championship.
Lopez joined previous winners of the SCORE top rookie award like Frank Vessels (1974), Jimmie Johnson (1995), Ricky Johnson (1993), Robby Gordon (1987), Doug Fortin Jr (1988), Bekki Freeman-Wik (1998), Andy McMillin (2004), Brian Wilson (2009), Luke McMillin (2010), Bryce Menzies (2011), Tony Gera (2014), Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2015), Chad Broughton (2016), Broc Dickerson (2017), A.J. Jones (2019) and Cayden MacCachren (2021).
BUROUGHS KING OF UTVs
Another of the top honorees of the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship was Matt Burroughs. With three fourth-place finishes and one ninth-place, consistency provided big dividends for Burroughs as he won the 2022 Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class championship, but also the SCORE Overall UTV point championship as well with his 485 season points. All the numbers added up and his point total placed him fifth in the 2022 SCORE Overall point standings as well.
Burroughs, 54, Norco, Calif., a Can-Am Factory driver, drove his No. 2948 Can-Am X3 to his second season championship in three years in 2022. In 2020 he was also the SCORE Overall point champion.
The largest UTV class in the SCORE World Desert Championship saw 29 starters in the SCORE San Felipe 250, 24 in the SCORE Baja 500, 23 in the SCORE Baja 400 and 27 in the SCORE Baja 1000. There was a total of 55 starters in the five SCORE UTV classes in the 2022 season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.
For this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, his second driver will again be Bradley Howe, 34, Leona Valley, Calif.
BALI, INDONESIA
Originally from Bali, Indonesia, Kelana Humphrey, 16, who lives in Temecula, Calif., will be making his SCORE race debut in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
And Humphrey has elected to make his first attempt in a SCORE Baja race a great one, having entered the amazing Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders. He will be racing on his No. 707x GasGas ex450 in San Felipe. So far there are a race-record 16 entries in the Pro Moto Ironman class for this race.
The gregarious youngster Humphrey has been racing motorcycles since he was eight years old. His resume includes Amateur Motocross, Arenacross, and now he has added Free Riding to his growing list of motorcycle accomplishments.
POLARIS FACTORY RACING
New super-team on the block, last week Polaris Off-Road officially announced the development of a comprehensive Polaris Factory Racing program and the sport’s first purpose-built race ready UTV. Driving three all-new Polaris-engineered race machines all in the Pro UTV Open class will be Austin Weiland, Brock Heger and Cayden MacCachren.
The team will share the same sponsors and vehicle livery supported by a team of Polaris off-road engineers.
Among the group running the team will be Craig Scanlon, a former Polaris executive who will continue to race in the Pro UTV Open class, former SCORE champion racer Ryan Thomas as the general manager and Adam Arsenault who is operations director at the team’s 10,000 sq. ft. race shop in San Diego. Crew Chief is Johnny Nelson, a two-time winner of the SCORE Mechanic of the Year Award (2013, 2019).
--WEILAND
Austin Weiland, 30, El Cajon, Calif. started through the youth ranks of karts, oval dwarf cars and eventually moving into short course off-road racing. Weiland has been competing full-time in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in the SCORE World Desert Championship for the last few years.
After a DNF in San Felipe last season, Weiland roared to three consecutive Pro UTV FI class wins to end the SCORE season—capturing his competitive class at the SCORE Baja 500, SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
In San Felipe this year, he will pilot the No. 1827 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R.
--HEGER
Brock Heger, 23, El Centro, Calif., has excelled in every discipline of racing and has over 100 wins and 200 podiums on his resume so far. Most recently, Heger has raced in Pro-Lite short course trucks and Production UTVs in the Champ Off Road Series, earning championships in both classes as well as most recently as the second driver in the Trophy Truck Spec class in SCORE races.
In San Felipe this year, he will drive the No. 1896 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R.
--MINI-MAC
Being son of the G.O.A.T. of off-road racing (Rob MacCachren), Las Vegas’ third-generation desert racer Cayden MacCachren, 21, has clearly stepped away from his famous father’s tracks and is forming his own trail in desert racing.
In just a few short seasons, Cayden MacCachren has raced in multiple SCORE classes
Cayden MacCachren finished his ‘rookie’ season by finishing third in the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship point standings in the Pro UTV FI class as the second driver for Brandon Schueler. Cayden MacCachren was voted as the 2021 SCORE Rookie of the Year for his exemplary efforts. Last season he raced part of the season in Pro UTV FI and part in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
Cayden MacCachren has spent several years in Baja prior to the last two seasons. Mini-Mac has actually driven for pre-running with his famous father while dad Rob records all of the course notes for both of them.
With his new Polaris Factory Racing team, Cayden MacCachren will be the driver of the No. 1821 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R.
AUSSERBAUER
Derek Ausserbauer, 29, Solvang, Calif., returns to ride again in San Felipe on his No. 23x Honda CRF450X in Pro Moto Unlimited.
In 2021, riding solo on the fastest motorcycle class in the race, Ausserbauer, became just the fourth motorcycle rider in race history to win the top Pro Moto Unlimited class in the history of the SCORE San Felipe 250. Ausserbauer, a veteran rider who has been on other prominent teams over the years as a co-rider, pulled off the victory in a SCORE race for the first time as a rider of record.
Ausserbauer joined the elite group of solo overall motorcycle winners in this race of Bob Balentine (1982), Jack Johnson (1983) and Tim Staab (1997).
Ausserbauer had a particular exciting 2021 season, starting with a solo ride to victory in the SCORE San Felipe 250 followed by three more podiums including a second place in the SCORE Baja 1000 to secure his first SCORE season point championship (Pro Moto Unlimited).
In the 2022 SCORE San Felipe 250, Ausserbauer finished third as the only solo rider once again in the Pro Moto Unlimited class.
SIMS
Branden Sims, 37, Prescott Valley, Ariz., has entered his No. 1886 Polaris Pro R in the Pro UTV Open class coming off a major victory in last year’s SCORE Baja 1000.
Defeating 54 starters in five different UTV classes in last year’s SCORE Baja 1000, Sims also emerged as the Overall UTV and Pro UTV Open class winner in last year’s race. He drove his Polaris Pro R to the fastest time among the UTVs, finishing nearly 40 minutes ahead of the second-place UTV in the race.
Also in 2022, Sims finished second in the Pro UTV FI class in the SCORE Baja 500.
In the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship, Sims raced twice in the Pro UTV FI class, finishing first in class in the SCORE Baja 500 and second in class in the SCORE Baja 1000.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Sims also won his class in 2018 and finished second in 2017.
Sims started his 2023 season by winning his UTV class in the King of the Hammers.
SCORE LIVE
During contingency on Thursday and Friday and the race on Saturday until the course closes on Sunday early morning, SCORE Live streaming will be broadcasting race activities and start and finish line interviews as well as live action from Drones, ground cameras and in-car cameras from around the race course. There will also be live Zoom interviews for individuals around the race course as part of SCORE Live for this race.
Popular Rat Sult, who is starting his eighth season as the voice of SCORE, will once again serve as host and lead announcer of the expansive SCORE Live streaming. Assisting Sult will be veteran voice Dave Arnold.
Sult and Arnold will be announcing from the SCORE start/finish ramp while the show will also include SCORE studio announcers in El Cajon, Calif., providing live info and updates throughout the race.
SCORE live is being produced again by SCORE Media House, Aaron Laub, producer, Alberto Luna, on-site director.
Coverage will also include hourly updates throughout the race from Austin Farner of Fishgistics.

GREEN FLAG
The King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250 will be an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday, April 1 will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 6 a.m. (PT) and 9 a.m. (PT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in around four and one-half hours, all vehicles will have a 14-hour time limit in the 262.80-mile race to become official finishers in the iconic race.
GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR THE YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing, has agreed to be the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship as SCORE is ‘Celebrating 50 Years of Desert Racing Excellence.’
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 on May 2, is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.
SAN FELIPE GRAND MARSHALS
SCORE has announced that Dan Cornwell and Pat Butler will join Sal Fish as the co-Grand Marshals for this year’s King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250, presented by Baja Vida.
Cornwell, a long-time SCORE racer who raced in multiple classes, won the overall in the Inaugural SCORE San Felipe 250 back in 1982. Cornwell drove the No. 103 Chenowth-VW to victory in that first SCORE race in San Felipe.
For nearly a decade now, Cornwell has been the SCORE Tech Director so he will be even busier at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
Butler, a prominent U.S. developer, opened the prominent El Dorado Ranch in 1989. Spending most of his time in San Felipe, Butler has been a staunch supporter of SCORE and the entire San Felipe municipality for over three decades.
Butler is a former International Vice-President of the Marriott Corporation.
