ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—‘Celebrating 50 Years of Desert Racing Excellence’, Las Vegas’ third-generation desert racer Thor Herbst has assumed the early lead in both the 2023 SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck Spec point standings following the recent season-opening King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250, fueled by Baja Vida.
Splitting the driving with his younger brother Pierce Herbst, also of Las Vegas, the pair earned their first SCORE class race victory in Round 1 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. Their Trophy Truck Spec class had a SCORE-record 43 starters in San Felipe.
At the start of the 50th season of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the top 10 overall point leaders were separated by just 18 total points after the opener of four races in the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship Overall point standings. A total of four classes have at least one racer in the top 31 overall points after one race.
POINT REGS
SCORE point regulations has all four races counting for final points toward season point championships. Racers are allowed one substitute driver/rider for the season but the driver/rider of record must either start or finish the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.
SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within each class.
TERRIBLE HERBST MOTORSPORTS LEADS OVERALL
Las Vegas’ third generation desert racers Thor Herbst, 23, and his younger brother Pierce Herbst, 20, won the Trophy Truck Spec class over a SCORE-record 43 starters in this popular class in their Terrible Herbst Motorsports No. 219 Herbst/Smith-Chevy truck.
In just their third full SCORE season of racing, their first SCORE class race win also gave the sons of SCORE champion racer Tim Herbst not only the Trophy Truck Spec point lead, but the SCORE Overall Point lead as well after one race with 133 points.
Thor Herbst commented at the finish line, “It went really well. We didn’t have any problems other than trimming a few trees. We ran in the dust most of the time and made a few passes. Our job was to get the car to Pierce clean and with no problems and that’s what we did. We didn’t have any flats. I want to thank everyone at Herbst/Smith Fab, there are so many people that are involved to make this program work. My dad and my uncles Ed (Herbst) and Troy (Herbst) are at the top of the list and then, of course, my brother Pierce who toughed out the second half of the San Felipe race and we got our first checkered flag.”
Continuing to introduce a new generation of Herbst family racers to the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, Terrible Herbst Motorsports had two other trucks competing in San Felipe and all three were official finishers.
Tim Herbst, 59, also of Las Vegas, finished 13th out of 31 starters in SCORE Trophy Truck in San Felipe with fellow Las Vegan Pat Dean as his second driver.
Also of Las Vegas, EJ Herbst, 22, son of SCORE champion racer Ed Herbst (Tim’s older brother) finished seventh in the SCORE-record field of 43 starters in Trophy Truck Spec. EJ Herbst split the driving with New Zealand’s Ryan Millen.
THE LUKE: SCORE TROPHY TRUCK POINT LEADER
Picking up where he left off last year, San Diego’s defending race and season champion Luke ‘The Luke’ McMillin roared through the Baja desert to defeat a massive 285 starters on April 1 in King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250, fueled by Baja Vida.
Luke McMillin, 30, drove solo to power his stunning No. 1 Mason-built all-wheel drive Chevy 1500 to lead the third-largest number of starters and finishers in race history to an awe-inspiring, error-free, penalty-free winning time of four hours, 29 minutes and 27 seconds over the sun-drenched, rock-filled, silt-strewn 282.51 miles for a remarkable average speed of 62.91 miles per hour.
He leads the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division with 121 points, putting in fourth overall after the San Felipe opener.
Luke McMillin now has five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins including a threepeat in the BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 (2021, 2022, 2023).
TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS
Behind Thor Herbst in third, and ‘The Luke’ in fourth, the top five drivers in the 2023 SCORE Overall point standings after one race in the 2023 SCORE World Desert Champion starts with Jason McNeil, El Cajon, Calif., who is also second in Trophy Truck Spec with 127 points in his No. 234 TSCO-Chevy, while third overall and in the Trophy Truck Spec class with 123 points is Travis Williams, Avondale, Ariz., in his No. 277 Geiser-Chevy.
Currently tied for fifth in the current overall point standings are Mexico’s Rodrigo Ampudia and Jason Coleman, Huntington Beach, Calif., with 120 points each after one race.
Leading his Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class is Rodrigo Ampudia, Ensenada, in his No. 2910 Can-Am X3 XRS Turbo RR and Coleman is also fourth in the Trophy Truck Spec points in his No. 292 Herbst/Smith-Chevy.
RODRIGO AMPUDIA JR OVERALL UTV/PRO UTV FI LEADER
Providing another top trophy for Mexico’s popular Ampudia family of Papas Y Beer Racing, Rodrigo Ampudia, 38, drove the fastest UTV in the race, defeating a SCORE-record 67 UTVs in five classes in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250.
With his younger brother Alan Ampudia finishing in second place overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck, Rodrigo Ampudia, Ensenada, added to the family’s fame as well by winning the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class that had a SCORE-record 30 starters in a time of 6:16:18 in his No. 2910 Can-Am X3 XRS Turbo R.
Ampudia earned 120 points in Round 1 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship and he is currently tied for fifth in the 2023 SCORE Overall point standings.
ZUNINO OVERALL MOTORCYCLE LEADER
Coming all the way from Argentina, Juan Zunino, 28, of Mendoza, has assumed the early SCORE Overall motorcycle and the Pro Moto Ironman point leader following the SCORE San Felipe 250.
Defeating a 2-wheel high 17 entries in his class for solo riders, Zunino has 107 season points so far on his No. 793x Honda CRF450X.
In scoring his first SCORE class win, Zunino covered the 263.50-mile race course in a time of 6 hours, 19 minutes, 32 seconds while averaging 41.6 miles per hour.
Following his victory, Zunion commented, “The race went really well. It was really difficult, a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. A lot of whoops and rocks everywhere. I was able to get in a rhythm that I liked and I was able to push forward so I’m really happy. I tried to stay steady and not commit any errors or have any falls. I tried to maintain the rhythm and concentration.”
“It's my first time doing Ironman. It's been a dream of mine to do and I’m really happy that I was able to do it because I’ve trained a lot for it. Even though it's only 263.50 miles, the race is long. We didn't stop to rest anywhere, just to fuel up and hydrate. The course was really torn up and aggressive, but we were able to triumph.”
VILDOSOLA SR—SCORE TT LEGEND
Mexico’s veteran SCORE champion Gustavo Vildosola Sr backed up his 2022 season point championship in SCORE TT Legend (drivers over 50 years old) following his undefeated season of four straight class wins with his victory in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
Vildosola Sr, 69, Mexicali, also won the SCORE TT Legend season point championship in 2018 with Scott Bailey as a second driver.
He won all four 2022 races and the 2023 opener with help from legendary Hall of Fame racer Ricky Johnson, 58, El Cajon, Calif. who drove the first half of each race in the Vildosola Racing No. 1L AWD Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.
Vildosola Sr has 98 season points after winning against eight starters in his class in San Felipe. He also finished eighth overall out of 285 starters in this year’s San Felipe race.
Vildosola Sr also has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins in his illustrious career in SCORE desert racing.
SCORE TROPHY TRUCK POINT LEADERS
SCORE Trophy Truck, the marquee racing division in the entire sport of desert racing for high-tech, 1,000-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks that includes SCORE TT Legend (drivers over 50 years old), had a total of 39 trucks compete in San Felipe.
Luke ‘The Luke’ McMillin, stands on the top spot on the podium for the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship with most of the world’s top SCORE Trophy Truck racers lined up behind him in the 2023 season point standings.
Besides Luke McMillin, the rest of the top 10 SCORE Trophy Truck point leaders starts with Alan Ampudia, 32, Ensenada, Mexico with 115 points in his No. 10 Papas Y Beer Ford Raptor (Mason) in second and Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies in third with 111 in his No. 7 Menzies Motorsports Ford Raptor (Mason).
Fourth place in SCORE Trophy Truck points with 108 points is Andrew Meyers, 43, San Marcos, Calif., in his No. 69 Toyota Escondido Toyota Tundra (Herbst/Smith).
Fifth is Mexico’s Gustavo ‘Tavo Vildosola’, 41, Mexicali, Mexico, with 106 points in his No. 21 Vildosola Racing Ford Raptor and sixth in SCORE Trophy Truck points is Las Vegas’ Steve Olliges, 55, with 105 points  in his No. 51 Ford Raptor (Geiser).
Seventh is Hall of Famer Larry Roeseler, Boulevard, Calif., with 104 points in his No. 43 Baja Vida Toyota Tundra (ID).
Eighth is Adam Householder, 38, Placentia, Calif., with 103 points in his No. 24 Ford F-150 (Herbst/Smith) and ninth is 17-year-old SCORE Rookie Roberto Romo Jr, 17, with 102 points in his No. 33 Coast Aluminum Ford Raptor (Racer).
Currently 10th in the SCORE Trophy Truck season points is Sam Baldi, 58, Beaumont, Calif., with 101 points in his No. 82 Baldi Brothers Chevy Silverado (Baldi).
NARAN ATOP PRO MOTO UNLIMITED
Maybe a surprise overall motorcycle winner to many, but definitely not to themselves, Ciaran Naran and Tucker Hopkins split the riding to capture the overall win in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 along with their own Pro Moto Unlimited Class.
Both experienced racers in the U.S. and Baja, Naran, 23, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Hopkins, 28, Venice Beach, Calif. rode their No. 3X Husqvarna FE450 to finish first among the motorcycles in a time of 6:08:05 (42.95mph) over the motorcycle course of 263.50 miles to each earn their first SCORE Overall motorcycle victory. Naran started and rode to race-mile 125 and Hopkins took the motorcycle from there to the motorcycle finish.
The Naran/Hopkins duo lead the Pro Moto unlimited class with 98 points.
Following the first major victory as a team, Naran said, “The first half of the race that I rode was really, really good. I came in knowing just keep the wheels on the ground; we don’t need crazy speed. San Felipe can bite you easily so I just wanted to make sure the bike kept moving and going forward. That was the game plan. We executed it well. The dust wasn’t too bad this morning, luckily, so I made some passes quickly. I think I got into fourth within 10 or 15 miles. Then I just kept trucking forward and got third, second, first. It happened smooth and efficient. Can’t complain. And Tucker did a super job in the second half keeping everything clean. We beat the Baja!”
“It was good to have someone like Colton Udall (multi-time SCORE motorcycle champion), who is very experienced down here, helping guide us and with pit strategy and guiding us through this adventure. Down here in Baja it isn’t racing other people, it is racing Baja. That is what Colton has always taught me. So, it is great having someone like that guide me and point me in the right direction. It helps me stay safe and be more prepared, so I’m not doing any danger to myself. It is unreal to know that we are just the second Husqvarna bike to ever win this race down here. That is cool. We made some history.”
