ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, among the latest entries to date for this month’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500 are Larry Roeseler, Cameron Steele, Rolf Helland, Zach Sizelove, Ethan Ebert, Bryce Menzies, Brad Wilson, Kyle Quinn, Justin Davis, Kaden Wells, Justin Buckley, Esteban Ruiz, Alirio Amado, Brandon Wright, and Stan Potter.
Round 2 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held May 31-June 4 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Ensenada, ‘The Off-Road Capital of the World’, is located 80 miles South of the U.S. Border near San Diego.
DETAILS
With over 300 entries expected from 30 U.S. States and 20 countries, 45 competition classes are offered for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.
Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s celebration of one of the top 10 motorsports events in the entire world.
All four 2023 SCORE races are being held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 50th season in 2023.
EARLY ENTRIES
     With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line, 115 total early entries have been received so far for this historic event, with racers representing 20 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and eight countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.
DOUBLE DIGITS
With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 26 (including four in SCORE TT Legend for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50), Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with spec engines) with 15.

LR—MR. BAJA
A racing legend on both sides of the Border, Hall of Famer Larry Roeseler simply goes by ‘Mr. Baja’ in Mexico. Living in Boulevard, Calif., Roeseler, 66, has been racing in SCORE Baja races since the early 1970s with an unrivaled record of excellence both on two wheels as well as four wheels.
In the SCORE Baja 1000, LR, as he is also known by friends and competitors, has a race-record 14 overalls (including 10 on motorcycles) among his 18 career class wins.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Roeseler has an amazing 12 overall wins, including nine on motorcycles among his 18 career class wins in this race as well.  His first class win in the SCORE Baja 500 was in 1972 on a motorcycle and his most recent was in 2021 in SCORE Trophy Truck.
This year Roeseler will again be the solo driver in SCORE Trophy Truck for the No. 43 Cantina Racing Baja Vida Toyota Tundra built by ID Designs. In 2021, Roeseler won the SCORE Baja 500 overall and drove solo to a strong finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 peninsula run. The SCORE Baja 500 victory in 2021 gave him five career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins.
In the 2020 season finale at the SCORE Baja 1000, Roeseler drove the first half of the race for the overall winning Luke McMillin.
The very popular Roeseler is an inductee into both the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF) (2012) and the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) Hall of Fame (1999).
STEELE-Y CAM
He may not play a musical instrument or carry a note singing, yet he is another of the many second-generation champion SCORE desert racers. Cameron ‘Steele-y Cam’ Steele is not only a two-time SCORE Trophy Truck race winner he is also the affable leader of the Desert Assassins race team.
He also finds time to help operate his SoCal Baja HQ aftermarket company, lead both an annual motorcycle and his annual ‘Trail of Missions’ truck tour down the Baja peninsula, emcee numerous events, host live stream internet shows, and is an action sport TV commentator who has announced a variety of competitions from IndyCar to the SCORE race coverage TV shows.
As far as racing is concerned, Steele, 55, of San Clemente, Calif., loves to stay busy and in years past has competed and had podium finishes in multiple classes in the same race, but now focuses on his No. 16 Desert Assassins Ford Raptor, built by Geiser Bros, in SCORE Trophy Truck.
Steele won the last two SCORE Trophy Truck races of the 2018 season after finishing second in the iconic 50th anniversary of the legendary SCORE Baja 1000 in 2017.
Steele’s second driver will once again be third-generation champion racer Ryan Arciero, 49, Foothill Ranch, Calif., who has four career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins.
While Steele is hunting for his first class win in this race, Ryan won the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck division as the second driver for Mark Miller in the 2003 SCORE Baja 500.
The Steele/Arciero pair opened the 2023 season with a 17th place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE San Felipe 250.
NORSEMAN RACING
Leading one of the top teams in the SCORE TT Legend class for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old is Rolf Helland, 63, a prominent businessman in the trucking industry from Morris, Ill.
Somewhat of a late bloomer in starting to compete in SCORE Baja racing the last several years, Helland and his driving teammate veteran champion SCORE racer Rick D. Johnson, 57, Barstow, Calif., were the 2021 SCORE TT Legend class point champions after a brilliant undefeated four-race season in the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Helland and Johnson, who has one career SCORE Trophy Truck class win (2009 SCORE Baja 500), split the driving in Helland’s No. 37L Norseman Racing Ford Raptor built by Mason Motorsports.
In last year’s SCORE Baja 500, Helland finished fourth in SCORE TT Legend, and the team had an unfortunate DNF in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
HONDA OFF-ROAD RACING TEAM
For the 2023 season team principal, and multi-time SCORE race champion Jeff Proctor, Glendora, Calif. has stepped out of the driver’s seat this year for health reasons and is devoting his full-time efforts to managing the Honda Off-Road Racing Team which has two entries in the 2023 SCORE Baja 500…

Driving the No. 1925 Honda Talon 1000R in the Pro UTV NA class, Zach Sizelove, 29, Hesperia, Calif., is running a limited SCORE schedule again this year.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, which he won in his class last year, Wayne Lambert, 47, Canyon Lake, Calif., is listed as his second driver.
Sizelove has raced for several years with his family in the SoCal High Desert evening building Class 1/2-1600 cars with his father. In his SCORE debut in San Felipe in 2021, he finished sixth out of 12 starters in his class in his first SCORE Baja race in the Honda Talon.
In last year’s SCORE Baja 500 he finished on top of the podium in first place.
In his other SCORE race last year, Sizelove finished second in the Pro UTV NA class in the SCORE Baja 1000 with Ethan Eberts as his second driver.

After racing last year in the Pro UTV NA class, Ethan Ebert, 17, Marana, Ariz., has moved up in class to take over Driver of Record duties for team principal Jeff Proctor in Class 7. Ebert, who has been race short course off-road since he was nine years old, will split the driving in the team’s HRD No. 709 Honda Ridgeline with Rich Glasczak, 48, Oceanside, Calif.
A short course veteran who competed successfully in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series and Great American Shortcourse, Ebert became a Honda development driver in 2021 and has spent the last two seasons with the Honda Talon department.
He began competing in SCORE races in 2022 starting with the SCORE Baja 500, where he finished fifth in the Pro UTV Normally Aspirated class. At the SCORE Baja 1000, he teamed up with Honda partner Zach Sizelove to finish in second place.
AWD MENZIES
A one-time protégé of Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies has molded his own enviable career in desert racing and rally racing out of the Menzies Motorsports race shop in his hometown.
Menzies, 35, literally exploded onto the SCORE desert racing scene in 2011 winning the SCORE Overall point championship, the SCORE Trophy Truck season point crown, two individual race wins and was voted as the 2011 SCORE Rookie of the Year.
Menzies has eight career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, the most recent being last September when he won the SCORE Baja 400 for the second straight year.
A great start that has evolved into branching out into short-course racing, rally raid, long-jump record feats and rock-crawling victories.
In 2016 Menzies made history by jumping his off-road truck 115.6m (379.4ft) over a New Mexico ghost town to set a new truck distance record.
With eight career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, Menzies is obviously among the favorites in his No. 7 Red Bull Menzies Motorsports Ford Raptor all-wheel drive SCORE Trophy Truck built by Mason Motorsports.
Among his stellar performances, Menzies has three overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victories in the SCORE Baja 500 (2011, 2012, 2014).
     This year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 was yet another example of his extreme tenacity and talent as he overcame a significant pre-running rollover and six flat tires during the race to finish third overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck.
WILSON MOTORSPORTS
One of numerous prolific third-generation desert racing teams competing with SCORE, Wilson Motorsports has once again entered two race cars in the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars. Both race cars are Chevy-powered Jimco vehicles.
Brad Wilson, 33, of Long Beach, Calif., is the driver of record for the No. 153 race car while long-time additional driver Kyle Quinn, 35, Lakewood, Calif. is the driver of record again this year with SCORE in the No. 100 Wilson Motorsports race car as the defending Class 1 season point champion.
For many years a second driver for the wonderful Wilson Motorsports team, Kyle Quinn, stepped into the lead driver position in one of the team’s entries last year and won the unlimited Class 1 at the SCORE San Felipe 250 in the No. 138 Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.
Quinn took the lead and shared driving duties in San Felipe with Brad Wilson’s father Ronny Wilson, 61, of Long Beach, Calif. At the SCORE Baja 400, with Brian Wilson’s cousin Brad Wilson as the second driver, Quinn finished on the podium in third place again and took the lead in Class 1. At the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000, Quinn won Class 1 with Ronny Wilson and Greg DiStefano as his driving mates to earn the season point title and finish 22nd in the SCORE Overall Season points.
In last year’s King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250, Wilson Motorsports claimed two of the podium positions in the unlimited Class 1. Quinn teamed with Brad’s father Ronny Wilson, also of Long Beach, Calif., to win the Class 1 over 10 starters in the class for unlimited open-wheel cars and Brad Wilson finished in third place.
In the 2022 June’s SCORE Baja 500, Quinn finished on the podium in third with Ronny Wilson while Brad Wilson finished sixth in class.
In last September’s SCORE Baja 400, Quinn/R. Wilson stayed consistent with their third straight podium, finishing in third place in Class 1 while Brad Wilson was the victim of equipment failure.
Brad Wilson finished third in the final point standings for the class for unlimited open-wheel desert race cars despite enduring DNFs the final two race of 2022.
Ronny Wilson won Class 1 in the 2016 SCORE Baja 500.
Brad Wilson opened the 2023 season with a second-place finish in the SCORE San Felipe 250 while Quinn suffered a rare DNF.
GREEN ARMY MOTORSPORTS
Justin Davis, 30, of Chino Hills, Calif., is leading Green Army Motorsports into Baja in the No. 285 Green Army Motorsports TSCO-Chevy in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
A race winner and a season point champion in several different SCORE racing classes, Justin Davis, a second-generation SCORE desert racer, has two career SCORE season class point championships (2010, 2011).
Justin Davis had a DNF in the San Felipe 2023 season opener and finished 12th out of 32 starters in Trophy Truck Spec in the SCORE Baja 500 last year.
Justin Davis has two class wins in the SCORE Baja 500, 2018, 2019 in the Unlimited Class 1.
DEEP WELLS
The Wells go deep in Utah and Risq Racing of Hurricane, Utah, is all about the Wells family racing team.
A two-generation desert racing team, family patriarch Travis Wells, and his wife Libby, both of Apple Valley, Utah, own the Risq Racing race team than includes their son Kaden Wells, 24, Hurricane, Utah.
Emma Cornwell, daughter of SCORE  Tech Director Dan Cornwell, is the navigator for Kaden Wells.
After four season class point titles in five years (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) Kaden Wells in the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class, is moving up to the Pro UTV Open class in 2023 and will be driving the team’s new No. 1895 Risq Racing Polaris RZR Pro R.
In the 2022 SCORE season, Wells had a pair of third-place podium finishes followed by a pair of class wins to secure his fourth season point championship.
Wells made it to the finish line at the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250 as 13th out of 17 starters in the Pro UTV Open class. It was his debut in the elite Pro UTV Open class.
BUCKLEY UPS ANTE
Rapidly emerging as a top contender in Class 10, Justin Buckley, 32, Long Beach, Calif., drives the No. 1064 Alumi Craft-Chevy.
Buckley opened this year by defeating 19 starters in Class 10 at the SCORE San Felipe 250 for his first SCORE race victory as the DOR.
In his second full season racing with SCORE after a partial schedule in 2017, Buckley enjoyed his 2022 SCORE season finishing in third place in the competitive class point standings out of 36 total starters.
He finished third in Class 10 in last year’s SCORE Baja 500 and second in the 2022 SCORE Baja 1000 in Class 10.
ESPIRITU DE ENSENADA
Riding the crest of last year’s season point championship in the venerable Class 11 for VW Sedans along with a season-opening class win in San Felipe this year, Mexico’s Espiritu de Ensenada race team will be stacking the deck for another win in this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
Winning last year’s season champion with veteran SCORE champion Hector Sarabia, 61, Ensenada, as Driver of Record, Esteban Ruiz, 50, Ensenada, has the mantle this year and led the popular local team to victory over seven starters in San Felipe.
Among the other drivers joining the team for this race will be former class champion Porfirio Gutierrez, 71, of Ensenada.
Also, part of the team for this race in their No. 1145 1974 VW Sedan will be Ricardo Rodriguez, Chula Vista, Calif., Juan C. Sarabia, 41, Ensenada, Mexico and Hector M. Martinez, 21, of Ensenada.
AMADO
Starting the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship with his first race win, Alirio Amado, 45, The Woodlands, Texas, he is the rider of record in Pro Moto 40 (riders over 40 years old), on his No. 441x Yamaha WR450F motorcycle.
For this race, Amada is going to use a five-rider team including Pedro Gonzalez, 58, Raleigh, North Carolina, Jim Jaros, 48, Pennsylvania and Curtis Lisenby, 58, Houston.
In his third season racing with SCORE, Amado finished second in the Pro Moto 40 class point standings with second place finishes in the 2022 SCORE Baja 400 and another second in the SCORE Baja 1000. His other two finishes in 2022 were third place in the SCORE San Felipe 250 for three podium finishes and a fourth place in the 2022 SCORE Baja 500.
WRIGHT WAY
Following several seasons co-rider on winning Pro motorcycle age group classes, Brandon Wright, 46, Oak Hills, Calif. races in Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) class where he won the season championship in his class and earned the 2022 SCORE Overall Motorcycle title as well with a victory in the SCORE San Felipe 250, second-place finishes in the SCORE Baja 500 and SCORE Baja 400 and a third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 out of 20 starters this year.
As the season class point champion, Wright rides the No. 700x Husqvarna FE501 motorcycle.
After a pre-running accident for the SCORE Baja 1000 caused him to withdraw from the race, he later decided (with approval from his doctor) to re-enter the race and he courageously battled to a podium finish to earn his two crowns.
In this year’s season opener in San Felipe, the Pro Moto Ironman had a race-record 17 starters and Wright earned a podium finish in third place to start his 2023 campaign.
3 AMIGOS
A trio with a multitude of years of SCORE Baja racing experience with a combined 178 years in age between them, ‘Tres Amigos’ San Potter, 61, San Marcos, Calif. is driver of record again this year and his additional compadres Freddie Willert, 55, El Cajon, Calif. and Dan Worley, 62, Encinitas, Calif. moved up to Class 10 in 2020 after winning the SCORE Lites season point title in 2019.
After several years away from the sport, the trio returned full-time in 2017 and finished seventh in the SCORE Lite points with one race win. In 2018, the talented trio finished fourth in the SCORE Lites points before the 2021 championship season in SCORE Lite where they won the SCORE San Felipe 250, the SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
With the team’s Jimco-VW race car sitting quietly for nearly a decade, the team won their class (SCORE Lites) in the 50th SCORE Baja 1000 in 2017.
All three of them have raced in several different SCORE classes over the years and Worley won the 1992 Pro Moto 30 season points.
‘Tres Amigos’ moved up to Class 10 where they split the driving in their No. 1006 Alumi Craft-Chevy, which is shod with BFGoodrich Tires and King Shocks.
Last year, they didn’t race in San Felipe and in the other three races had class finishes of first (SCORE Baja 500), second (SCORE Baja 400) and a DNF (SCORE Baja 1000).
Overcoming an accident during the race, the 3 Amigos recovered enough to finish 10th out of 19 starters in Class 10 to open the 2023 season.
START ORDER/DRAW DEADLINE
The starting order within each class for this race is being determined by the individual finishes at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, if the individual entry is received and all fees paid in full by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 19.
All entries received and paid in full by May 19 who didn’t race in San Felipe, will be part of a drawing to determine the remainder of the start order within each class. The draw results will be posted on the SCORE website at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, May 26.
Up until and 5 p.m. PT on May 24, entries will be continue accepted in person only at the SCORE Ensenada. Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 31-June 2).
All entries received after 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 19, including on-site, late entries, will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 487.52-mile race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 20 starting at race mile 33.78. The section to rm33.38 section will be open only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only on Friday (June 2). Outbound pre-running on Friday (June 2) will start at rm4.90 to rm33.38. No inbound pre-running of this section.
The official SCORE Racer Brief, Penalty brief, course map and GPS files will be available by 6 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 18 on the SCORE website under race info/SCORE Baja 500.
COURSE PREVIEW
     With pre-running opening on Saturday, May 20 for the BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva is putting together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The distance will be 487.52 miles around the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula.
It will start and finish once again on Blvd. Costero adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada. Colorful Contingency and Tech Inspection will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
ON-SITE RACER REGISTRATION
Being held in the Salon Rojo at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada, regular on-site and late racer registration will be held on Wednesday (May 31) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT, on Thursday (June 1) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on Friday (June 2) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. on Wednesday (May 31), 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (June 1) and 4 p.m. PT on Friday (June 2).
GRAN HISTORIA
This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship includes another special tribute to the iconic SCORE Baja 500.
The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. After NORRA was removed from Baja after the 1972 race, the local Baja Sports Committee produced the 1973 event. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the event starting in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the SCORE Baja 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE in December of 2012.
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada as the first of nearly 165 SCORE Baja races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 500 will start for the 49th time in Ensenada and finish for the 45th time in Ensenada.

This year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 overall victory by San Diego’s Luke McMillin marked the 103rd SCORE Baja overall race win for BFGoodrich Tires.
BFGoodrich Tires has posted a contingency bonus for the overall winner of this year’s race of US$10,000.

SCORE Live will be streaming throughout race week on the SCORE website. Colorful Rat Sult is in his eighth season as the host and lead announcer of SCORE Live. Assisting him again at this race will be veteran voice Dave Arnold.
GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR GOLDEN YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 tomorrow (May 2), is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.

SCORE BAJA 500 GRAND MARSHALS
     SCORE has announced that Ivan Stewart, Alpine, Calif., and Johnny Campbell will be the co-Grand Marshals for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500.
When it comes to desert racing there is only one ‘Ironman’ standing at the top of the list of solo drivers/riders. San Diego’s iconic Ivan ‘Ironman’ will be celebrating his 78th birthday on June 4, during the conclusion of this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
The ‘Ironman’ celebrated his birthday annually over the years with 17 career class wins including a race-record 10 overall 4-wheel vehicle victories in the SCORE Baja 500.
The legendary Stewart has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006), the San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Hall of Fame (2009) and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2020). Driving most of his career for Toyota Motorcycles, Stewart continues as a spokesperson for Toyota Racing Development.
Campbell, 52, San Clemente, Calif., is a stellar SCORE motorcycle racing champion with six career class wins including five overall victories in the SCORE Baja 500. He also has a race-record 11 overall motorcycle victories in the SCORE Baja 1000 on his resume.
Campbell is also an 11-time SCORE season point champion in the Pro Moto Unlimited class on his Honda CRF450X. He also rode in the 2001 Dakar Rally, finishing eighth overall.
Campbell has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2018) and the Trailblazers MC Hall of Fame (2021).
Today he continues as the Off-Road Coordinator for American Honda in addition to running his own successful team—Johnny Campbell Racing/Honda (JCR) with several top desert motorcycle racers.
