ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, among the recent entries to date for this month’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500 are Tim Herbst, Thor Herbst, EJ Herbst, Lawrence Janesky, Austin ‘AJ’ Jones, Seth Quintero, Marc Burnett, Alan Ampudia, Steve Myers, Christopher Polvoorde, Eli Yee, Daniel Chamlee, Ryan Liebelt, Oscar Alvarez, and Joe Bolton.
Round 2 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held May 31-June 4 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Ensenada, ‘The Off-Road Capital of the World,’ is located 80 miles South of the U.S. Border near San Diego.
With over 300 entries expected from 30 U.S. States and 20 countries, 45 competition classes are offered for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.
Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s celebration of one of the top 10 motorsports events in the entire world.
All four 2023 SCORE races are being held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 50th season in 2023.
EARLY ENTRIES
With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line, 158 total entries have been received so far for this historic event, with racers representing 23 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and nine countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Japan, and New Zealand.

With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 29 (including four in SCORE TT Legend for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50), Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with crate engines) with 22, Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) with 13, and Pro UTV Open with 12.

TRES ‘LOS TERRIBLES’
Another one of the most legendary families in all of desert racing, the Herbst family now has part of its third generation as racers on Las Vegas’ iconic Terrible Herbst Motorsports Monster Energy team.
Started by family patriarch the late Jerry Herbst (winner of the 1970 Baja 500) back in the 1970s and carrying through until the 2010s with brothers Ed, Tim and Troy Herbst, and now part of the third generation of the Herbst boys have taken to desert racing in the 2020s.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Terrible Herbst Motorsports has three of their Herbst/Smith Fab custom trucks in the starting grid, one in SCORE Trophy Truck and two in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
Driver of record in the No. 19 Monster Energy Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy Truck is Tim Herbst, 58, who shares driving duties with another celebrated second-gen desert racer from Las Vegas, Pat Dean, 53. They finished 13th in class in the 2023 season opener in San Felipe.
Driver of record in the No. 219 Monster Energy Chevy Silverado in Trophy Truck Spec are Tim Herbst’s sons Thor Herbst, 23, and Pierce Herbst, 20. The super-talented young duo opened the 2023 season by winning the Trophy Truck Spec class over a SCORE-record 43 starters in the SCORE San Felipe 250.
The third Terrible Herbst Motorsports entry is the No. 263, with EJ Herbst (son of Ed Herbst), 22, with New Zealand rally racer Ryan Millen, 37, as his second driver. In this year’s season-opener, EJ finished seventh out of the SCORE-record 43 starters in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Tim Herbst teamed with his older brother Ed Herbst to win Class 2 in 1989 and teamed with his younger brother Troy Herbst to win the unlimited Class 1 in 1998.
JANESKY
Lawrence Janesky is a successful businessman from Middlebury, Connecticut, who started riding dirt bikes late at age 32 with his brother. When his son Tanner turned five, Lawrence got him on a dirt bike and the two have been riding together ever since. Years later, after touring in Utah, South Africa, and Columbia, the two decided to tour with Chris Haines Baja Motorcycle Adventure Tours where they first learned about the SCORE Baja 1000. The two later teamed up with the Hall of Famer Haines as their team manager and raced their first SCORE Baja 1000 in 2015, winning the Sportsman Motorcycle Class.
From that humble start, Lawrence and his son Tanner quickly morphed into racing several times in the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, especially attempting to finish the iconic SCORE Baja 1000.
What evolved from their inspirational efforts were four separate memorable You Tube documentaries: Into the Dust, Into the Dust2, Into the Dust3 and Into the Dust4 which have had over four million views.
Lawrence Janesky, 58, has entered the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class. in the No. 1914 Honda Talon.
In this year’s SCORE San Felipe 50, Lawrence Janesky opened the season with a fourth-place finish in Pro UTV NA and he also led a team in the Sportsman Motorcycle class where they finished fifth out of nine starters in the class.
As of today, Tanner Janesky, 28, has not entered this race. He finished second in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 in Pro Moto Ironman.
Lawrence Janesky has three recent finishes in the SCORE Baja 500. He was fifth in Pro Moto Ironman in this race in 2018, fourth in Pro Moto Ironman in 2019 and third in the Pro Moto 50 class in 2020.
SOUTH RACING
Based in Germany, South Racing has entered its top two racers from the Red Bull Junior Team USA, presented by BFGoodrich Tires. South Racing primarily races in international Rally Raid events, especially in the Dakar Rally. Competing in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in this year’s SCORE Baja 500 will be American’s Austin Jones and Seth Quintero.

A second-gen of a SCORE champion racer (Jesse Jones-2010 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship), Austin ‘AJ’ Jones, 27, Litchfield Park, Ariz., will be the driver of the No. 2985 Can-Am Maverick X3.
After earning the 2019 SCORE Rookie of the Year award, the year he won two SCORE races (SCORE San Felipe 250 and SCORE Baja 1000), he finished second in the Trophy Truck Spec season point standings by just two points.
AJ Jones then turned his focus to Rally Raid racing where he quickly climbed the ladder as a factory UTV driver, winning his class in both the 2022 and the 2023 Dakar Rally events.
Growing up as a stick and ball athlete, he earned a scholarship to play Lacrosse at San Diego State, but an invitation from his father to be his navigator for the 2018 SCORE Baja 1000, changed his career path dramatically.
He raced in last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 and finished 10th in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class.

Rapidly expanding his racing horizons, Seth Quintero, 20, San Marcos, Calif., is the driver of record for this year’s SCORE Baja 500 in No. 2903 Can-Am Maverick X3 in the Pro UTV NA class.
Quintero may only be 20 years old, but he has been racing off-road vehicles since he was four on quads and starting competing when he was 10, winning the Junior UTV World Championship when he was just 15 in 2015.
After a few seasons racing UTVs successfully in domestic racing series, Quintero was introduced to the European Rally Raid world.
In the 2021 Dakar Rally, Quintero won six states, setting a new record for the youngest stage winner in Dakar History (18).
At the 2022 Dakar Rally, Quintero set a new record for the most stage wins in a single running of the event, claiming 12 stage victories out of 13 total. However, the only stage he failed to win, Quintero lost over 17 hours due to mechanical failures, resulting in a 16th place finish in the overall rankings.
At the 2023 Dakar Rally, Quintero secured his first podium in the event with a second-place finisher overall and two stage wins, finishing only behind his teammate Austin ‘AJ’ Jones.
ON THE MARC
Marc Burnett, 52, Chula Vista, Calif., is a veteran champion SCORE desert racer, with over 30 years of accomplishments in SCORE Baja racing.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Burnett will again be among the favorites in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class, driving solo in his No. 2905 Can-Am X3.
Burnett started racing motocross at the tender age of five, eventually riding for Factory Kawasaki, Honda, and Suzuki motorcycle teams in SCORE Baja racing.
Burnett moved to racing Class 6 trucks after several years where he again earned first place in the 2008 SCORE San Felipe 250, first place at the 2008 SCORE Baja 1000 and first place in at the SCORE Baja 500 in 2011.
Overall, Burnett has earned three SCORE season point championships in his career (1995, 2014 and 2017) including three class wins in the SCORE Baja 500, 1996 in Pro Moto Limited, 2011 in Class 6 and 2014 in Pro UTV.
Burnett has also earned four prestigious Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards in his career for completing every required mile in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2019.
In this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Burnett finished 20th out of a SCORE record 30 starters in the Pro UTV FI class.
Burnett also founded FreestyleMX in 1997, the group that traveled across the globe presenting Freestyle motorcycle shows for over 20 years.
AMPUDIA-PAPAS Y BEER
Alan Ampudia, 32, of Ensenada, Mexico, is a major part of the second-generation of Mexican SCORE desert racers from the well-known Ampudia family, who own Papas Y Beer night clubs in Ensenada, Mexico and Rosarito Beach, Mexico.

Ampudia and his younger brother Aaron Ampudia drove to the overall and SCORE Trophy Truck victory the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Alan Ampudia was as high as third in the 2022 SCORE Trophy Truck season points, but a DNF in the SCORE Baja 1000 dropped down to 10th in points for the 2022 season.
Driving solo so far in 2023, Alan Ampudia opened the season with a second-place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck in the SCORE San Felipe 250. He averaged 61.63 miles per hour over the 263.50-mile race course, finishing second overall as well, seven minute, 16 seconds behind the race winner Luke McMillin.
MYERS ADDS FIFTH
With four family members in three vehicles already entered, veteran SCORE racer Steve Myers, 57, Newport Beach, Calif., made it five Myers multi-generational family racers in four vehicles for this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
Steve Myers, driving in Class 10 in his TE Motorsports, No. 1057 Alumi Craft-Honda, joins his younger brothers Dan Myers and Steve Myers along with his own daughters Britney Myers and Tamara Myers to complete the Myers starting five for the Toyota Escondido team.
Dan Myers is racing in his No. 6 Toyota SCORE Trophy Truck, Andrew Myers is racing in his No. 69 Toyota SCORE Trophy Truck while Steve Myers’ daughters Britney and Tamara will split the driving in the No. 1023 in Class 10.
The biggest Myers family SCORE class win was in 2000 when Steve Myers was the driver of record and split the driving with his brothers Dan and Andrew to win Class 10 in the epic new millennium race of nearly 1,700 miles that started in Ensenada and finished in Cabo San Lucas.
CPR
Building experience and some years under his belt along the trail upwards, SoCal’s youthful dynamo Christopher Polvoorde, led the SCORE Overall point standings for three races in 2022 and the massive Trophy Truck Spec class as well until an untimely DNF in the SCORE Baja 1000 stopped his championship run.
But the young buck is back!
He started last year with a season-opening Trophy Truck Spec class victory at the King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250 that saw a race-high 36 starters in his class. This year in San Felipe, Polvoorde finished 10th out of a SCORE record 43 starters in his class.
Polvoorde may be just 22 years old, but he has already been racing for over nine years and has evolved quickly into a SCORE Baja racing championship contender.
He followed up his San Felipe victory last year with a fourth place finish out of 32 starters in Trophy Truck Spec at the SCORE Baja 500 the drove back to the top of the podium over 24 starters for another class win at the SCORE Baja 400.
Polvoorde has raced in many different disciplines including Short Course, Desert Racing, Rally Racing, Midget Racing, Robby Gordon’s Stadium Trucks, Kart Racing and the King of the Hammers where he won his class in 2022.
When he isn’t driving four-wheel race vehicles, he also is an avid mountain bike enthusiast in his limited spare time.
Polvoorde drives the No. 204 CP Racing Mason Motorsports-Ford.
Polvoorde is also a full-time college student attending the University of San Diego on scholarship seeking a double major in finance and real estate through the USD School of Business.
ELI YEE
Another of the prominent and veteran Mexican racers in the SCORE World Desert Championship, Eli Yee, 49, of Tijuana has won numerous races and the 2020 class point title in Class 1/2-1600.
Yee has raced with SCORE for nearly 30 years and among his recent class wins are in the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000 in both 2020 and 2021.
In 2022, after an unsettling DNF in the San Felipe, Yee marched back with three consecutive class wins at the SCORE Baja 500, the SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000 in his class to finish second in the Class 1/2-1600 season point standings.
Yee has switched classes for this year and is racing in Class 5 in his No. 511 Chevy-powered Jake’s Baja Bug. He won his class in this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 driving solo.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Yee has three Class 1/2-1600 victories (2019, 2021, 2022).
CLASS 7 MASTER
Veteran SCORE champion Daniel Chamlee, 60, of Montecito, Calif., who now lives mostly in San Felipe, races in Class 7 in his No. 700 The Factory Racing Ford Ranger.
Chamlee has driven consistently to earn 18 SCORE Class 7 season point championships in the last 19 years.
In last year’s season-opener in San Felipe, Chamlee was on the podium again, finishing third in Class 7. In June’s SCORE Baja 500, Chamlee earned another Class 7 victory to add to his legacy and in September he earned his third consecutive victory in the three-year old SCORE Baja 400. He capped his 2022 championship season with another podium finish, third place.
In his career has also earned eight Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, for racers who complete every required mile for that season.
In the SCORE Baja 500, the ultra-dedicated Chamlee, who drives mostly solo, has recorded six Class 7 victories (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2022).
LIEBELT
Ryan Liebelt continues to make lasting impressions in the SCORE motorcycle racing world as not only a rider, but also as a builder of class-winning motorcycles.
From Reedley, Calif., Liebelt, 43, has 13 motorcycle age-group class wins since 2017 including eight straight in two undefeated seasons that earned him the Pro Moto 40 season point title in both 2021 and 2022.
In the SCORE Baja 500, he has three class wins, 2018 in Pro Moto 30 and the last two years in Pro Moto 40. In 2017 he finished third in this race in Pro Moto 30 and fourth in the same class in 2019.
After starting the 2023 season with a DNF in the Pro Moto Unlimited class, Liebelt has returned to Pro Moto 40 for this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
He will be leading another talented team on the No. 400x Yamaha WR450F that he built. His co-riders for this year’s race are Jason Trubey, 44, Henderson, Nev., JD Triffon, 40, and Justin James Shultz, 42, Lake Forest, Calif.
CHAMPS X2
Racing together this year are two former SCORE class point champions, Oscar Alvarez and Doug Satterfield are racing together this year in the SCORE Lites class.
Driving Alvarez’s No. 1211 OSO-VW, Alvarez, 46, of McAllen, Texas and San Diego’s Satterfield, 45, finished third in class in San Felipe this year to start the 2023 season.
Alvarez has finished second in SCORE Lites season points the past two years and he won the season class crown in 2018 in Class 1/2-1600.
Satterfield won the SCORE Lite season point title in 2021 in a year that also saw him win two races in his class.
Alvarez finished second in last year’s SCORE Baja 500 in SCORE Lites.
BOLTON FATHER/SON
Another successful paring of a father and son team in SCORE racing, former vet motorcycle champion Joe Bolton, 65, and his son Austin, 27, are leading the SCORE point standings this year in the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class. They started the season with a San Felipe class win.
In 2022, the Boltons won the season opener in their class and finished second in both this year’s SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 400 to lead his class point standings but slipped a bit to fourth place in the SCORE Baja 1000 and finished second in his class season points.
Joe Bolton raced SCORE motorcycles when he was younger and his biggest class win was when he won the Pro Moto Limited class in the 1985 SCORE Baja 1000.
The Boltons are sharing the driving in the No. 1957 Polaris RZR XP1000 UTV.
START ORDER/DRAW DEADLINE
The starting order within each class for this race is being determined by the individual finishes at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, if the individual entry is received and all fees paid in full by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 19.
All entries received and paid in full by May 19 who didn’t race in San Felipe, will be part of a drawing to determine the remainder of the start order within each class. The draw results will be posted on the SCORE website at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, May 26.
Up until and 5 p.m. PT on May 24, entries will be continue accepted in person only at the SCORE Ensenada. Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 31-June 2).
All entries received after 5 p.m. PT on Friday, May 19, including on-site, late entries, will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 487.52-mile race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 20 starting at race mile 33.78. The section to rm33.38 section will be open only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only on Friday (June 2). Outbound pre-running on Friday (June 2) will start at rm4.90 to rm33.38. No inbound pre-running of this section.
The official SCORE Racer Brief, Penalty brief, course map and GPS files will be available by 6 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 18 on the SCORE website under race info/SCORE Baja 500.
COURSE PREVIEW
With pre-running opening on Saturday, May 20 for the BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva is putting together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The distance will be 487.52 miles around the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula.
It will start and finish once again on Blvd. Costero adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada. Colorful Contingency and Tech Inspection will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
ON-SITE RACER REGISTRATION
Being held in the Salon Rojo at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada, regular on-site and late racer registration will be held on Wednesday (May 31) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT, on Thursday (June 1) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on Friday (June 2) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. on Wednesday (May 31), 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (June 1) and 4 p.m. PT on Friday (June 2).
GRAN HISTORIA
This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship includes another special tribute to the iconic SCORE Baja 500.
The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. After NORRA was removed from Baja after the 1972 race, the local Baja Sports Committee produced the 1973 event. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the event starting in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the SCORE Baja 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE in December of 2012.
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada as the first of nearly 165 SCORE Baja races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 500 will start for the 49th time in Ensenada and finish for the 45th time in Ensenada.

BFGoodrich Tires also has been the choice of 30 of the 36 overall winners of the SCORE San Felipe 250, all three SCORE Desert Challenge races, the lone SCORE Challenge of Champions in San Felipe, the one SCORE Baja Sur 500 and one of the three overall winners in the SCORE Baja 400.
This year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 overall victory by San Diego’s Luke McMillin marked the 103rd SCORE Baja overall race win for BFGoodrich Tires.
BFGoodrich Tires has posted a contingency bonus for the overall winner of this year’s race of US$10,000.
SCORE Live will be streaming throughout race week on the SCORE website. Colorful Rat Sult is in his eighth season as the host and lead announcer of SCORE Live. Assisting him again at this race will be veteran voice Dave Arnold.
GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR GOLDEN YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 tomorrow (May 2), is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.
He expanded TV coverage of SCORE races and in 1994 created the SCORE Trophy Truck class, the marquee racing division in the sport of desert racing.
SCORE BAJA 500 GRAND MARSHALS
SCORE has announced that Ivan Stewart, Alpine, Calif., and Johnny Campbell will be the co-Grand Marshals for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500.
When it comes to desert racing there is only one ‘Ironman’ standing at the top of the list of solo drivers/riders. San Diego’s iconic Ivan ‘Ironman’ will be celebrating his 78th birthday on June 4, during the conclusion of this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
The ‘Ironman’ celebrated his birthday annually over the years with 17 career class wins including a race-record 10 overall 4-wheel vehicle victories in the SCORE Baja 500.
The legendary Stewart has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006), the San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Hall of Fame (2009) and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2020). Driving most of his career for Toyota Motorcycles, Stewart continues as a spokesperson for Toyota Racing Development.
Campbell, 52, San Clemente, Calif., is a stellar SCORE motorcycle racing champion with six career class wins including five overall victories in the SCORE Baja 500. He also has a race-record 11 overall motorcycle victories in the SCORE Baja 1000 on his resume.
Campbell is also an 11-time SCORE season point champion in the Pro Moto Unlimited class on his Honda CRF450X. He also rode in the 2001 Dakar Rally, finishing eighth overall.
Campbell has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2018) and the Trailblazers MC Hall of Fame (2021).
Today he continues as the Off-Road Coordinator for American Honda in addition to running his own successful team—Johnny Campbell Racing/Honda (JCR) with several top desert motorcycle racers.
