ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, among the recent entries to date for this month’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500 are Craig Scanlon, Cayden MacCachren, Austin Weiland, Brock Heger, Matt Burroughs, Phil Blurton, Ethan Hagle and his brother Ben Hagle, Fabricio Fuentes, Jessica Lopes, Kevy Nott, J. David Ruvalcaba, Edward Muncey, Fernando Beltran and Juan Zunino.
Round 2 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held May 31-June 4 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Ensenada, ‘The Off-Road Capital of the World,’ is located 80 miles South of the U.S. Border near San Diego.
With over 300 entries expected from 30 U.S. States and 20 countries, 45 competition classes are offered for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.
Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s celebration of one of the top 10 motorsports events in the entire world.
All four 2023 SCORE races are being held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 50th season in 2023.
ENTRIES
With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line, 202 total entries have been received so far for this historic event, with racers representing 25 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and 11 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, and Peru.

With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 31 (including six in SCORE TT Legend for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50), Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with crate engines) with 28, Class 10 with 12, Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) with 18, Pro UTV Open with 18, and Pro UTV Stock with 10.

POLARIS FACTORY RACING
New super-team on the block is a comprehensive Polaris Factory Racing program and the sport’s first purpose-built race ready UTV. Driving three all-new Polaris-engineered race machines all in the Pro UTV Open class are Cayden MacCachren, Austin Weiland, and Brock Heger.
The team made an auspicious debut at the 2023 King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 by all finishing in the top 10 in their class—first, fourth, sixth and 10th.
The team shares the same sponsors and vehicle livery supported by a team of Polaris off-road engineers.
Team principal is Craig Scanlon, a former Polaris executive who continues to race in the Pro UTV Open class, former SCORE champion racer Ryan Thomas as the general manager and Adam Arsenault who is operations director at the team’s 10,000 sq. ft. race shop in San Diego. Crew Chief is Johnny Nelson, a two-time winner of the SCORE Mechanic of the Year Award (2013, 2019).
--SCANLON
Team principal of SCI Motorsports, Craig Scanlon, 49, Orange, Calif. (Helena, Mont.) drives the No. 1831 Polaris RZR Pro R where he started the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship by winning the Pro UTV Open class as well as recording the fastest time of a SCORE-record 64 total UTVs competing in the SCORE San Felipe 250 in five different classes.
Technically he is not part of the new Polaris Factory Racing team, but he obviously receives considerable assistance from the team that the leads.
His second driver for the SCORE Baja 500 will be Max Eddy, 40, of Barstow, Calif. Eddy is a former SCORE motorcycle racing champion.
--MINI-MAC
Being son of the G.O.A.T. of off-road racing (Rob MacCachren), Las Vegas’ third-generation desert racer Cayden MacCachren, 21, has clearly stepped away from his famous father’s tracks and is forming his own trail in desert racing.

Cayden MacCachren finished his ‘rookie’ season by finishing third in the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship point standings in the Pro UTV FI class as the second driver for Brandon Schueler. Cayden MacCachren was voted as the 2021 SCORE Rookie of the Year for his exemplary efforts. Last season he raced part of the season in Pro UTV FI and part in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
Cayden MacCachren has spent several years in Baja prior to the last two-plus seasons. Mini-Mac has driven for pre-running with his famous father while dad Rob records all the course notes for both of them.
He opened the 2023 season with a fourth-place finish in Pro UTV Open in San Felipe.
With his new Polaris Factory Racing team, Cayden MacCachren is the driver of the No. 1821 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R.
--WEILAND
Austin Weiland, 30, El Cajon, Calif. started through the youth ranks of karts, oval dwarf cars and eventually moving into short course off-road racing. Weiland has been competing full-time in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in the SCORE World Desert Championship for the last few years.
After a DNF in San Felipe last season, Weiland roared to three consecutive Pro UTV FI class wins to end the SCORE season—capturing his competitive class at the SCORE Baja 500, SCORE Baja 400 and the SCORE Baja 1000.
This year, he pilots the No. 1827 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R. His long-time second driver is Dylan Schmoke, 30, Santee, Calif.
In the season opener in San Felipe, Weiland finished sixth in Pro UTV Open.
--HEGER
Brock Heger, 23, El Centro, Calif., has excelled in every discipline of racing and has over 100 wins and 200 podiums on his resume so far. Most recently, Heger has raced in Pro-Lite short course trucks and Production UTVs in the Champ Off Road Series, earning championships in both classes as well as most recently as the second driver in the Trophy Truck Spec class in SCORE races.
Heger drives the No. 1896 SCI Motorsports Polaris Pro-R. He opened the new campaign with a 10th place finish in his new class.
BUROUGHS KING OF UTVs
Another of the top honorees of the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship was Matt Burroughs. With three fourth-place finishes and one ninth-place, consistency provided big dividends for Burroughs as he won the 2022 Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class championship, but also the SCORE Overall UTV point championship as well with his 485 season points.
All the numbers added up and his point total placed him fifth in the 2022 SCORE Overall point standings as well.
Burroughs, 54, Norco, Calif., a Can-Am Factory driver, drove his No. 2948 Can-Am X3 to his second season championship in three years in 2022. In 2020 he was also the SCORE Overall point champion.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, his second driver will again be Bradley Howe, 34, Leona Valley, Calif.
Burroughs opened the season with sixth place out of the SCORE-record 30 starters in the Pro UTV FI class.
BLURTON
Four-time UTV World Champion and 2021 SCORE Overall point champion Phil Blurton has returned for this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
After his stunning 2021 season, Blurton ran just two SCORE races in 2022. This will be his 2023 SCORE debut race.
Climbing the ladder race-by-race, noted Northern California racer Phil Blurton enjoyed his first season competing full-time in SCORE by winning the SCORE Overall, SCORE UTV overall and Pro UTV FI class point championships in the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Starting cautiously with a fourth place in class in the 2021 season opener, Burton, of Auburn, Calif. and his driving teammate Beau Judge, Rockland, Calif., finished in second place in each of the next two races and culminated their championship campaign by winning their class in the season-ending legendary SCORE Baja 1000 to earn their season crowns.
Blurton, 36, may have been a SCORE rookie in 2020, but he have been honing their UTV driving skills competitively for over four years before their big splash in the 2021 SCORE series.
Finishing his rookie season in SCORE racing, four-time UTV World Champion Blurton, a second-generation SCORE desert racer, was the driver of record in winning his first SCORE Baja 1000 title and his first overall UTV race win over 62 starters in four UTV classes while winning the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class.
He drives the No. 2944 Can-Am X3.
BROTHERS HAGLE
The Hagle brothers have returned in a new class since the 2021 Class 10 SCORE Season Point Champions have moved up to the even more competitive Trophy Truck Spec Class for the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
From Somis, Calif., DOR this year is Ethan Hagle, 30, while his second-driver will be again be his brother Ben Hagle, 33.
Together, the Hagle brothers won Class 10 in 2021, winning the last two races of the year to win their class and finish 10th in the 2021 SCORE Overall point standings.
The Hagle brothers also won the 2021 SCORE Open Wheel Overall season point title.
In the 2022 SCORE San Felipe 250 to open the season, the Hagle brothers finished fourth out of 19 starters in Class 10, splitting the wheel time in their No. 1000 Hagle Lumber Alumi Craft-Chevy. After two DNFs, they didn’t race in the SCORE Baja 1000 to help prepare for this season.
The Hagle brothers are driving their sparkling new No. 246 Hagle Lumber Company Alumi Craft-Chevy in the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship in Trophy Truck Spec.
They finished 13th out of a SCORE-record 43 starters in their class in San Felipe.
BOLIVIA’S FAB FUENTES
Still a relative newcomer to SCORE racing, Fabricio Fuentes, 46, is a highly accomplished and well-known motorcycle racer from Villa Montes, Bolivia. The affable Fuentes, known for his trademark special Bolivian Sombrero he wears at the races, is a six-time Dakar Rally veteran. In his last Dakar, he was the 39th overall motorcycle in the legendary Rally.
Fuentes is also a multi-time national motorcycle champion in Bolivia and has remained in the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders even though his compatriot Salvatierra switched last year to the Pro Moto Unlimited class after two years competing in the same class.
Fuentes finished second in the 2021 SCORE Pro Moto Ironman class point standings and was also second to Bolivian teammate Salvatierra in the 2021 SCORE Baja 400.
In the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250, Fuentes rides the No. 785x Gas Gas EC350F motorcycle.
In 2022, Fuentes was fifth in the Pro Moto Ironman season point standings following a third-place podium finish in San Felipe, a rare did-not-finish (DNF) in the SCORE Baja 500, another third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400 and a fourth-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.
In San Felipe this year, Fuentes finished ninth out of a race-record 17 starters in Pro Moto Ironman.
LOPEZ SISTER & BROTHER
One of the most prominent racing families in all of Mexico, two of SCORE champion Juan C. Lopez’s children, one son and one daughter, have entered this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
All from Tecate, Mexico, Jessica Lopez, 19, is the driver of record in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class in the No. 2996 Can-Am Maverick X3. Second driver will be Jessica’s brother Alexis, 23.
The Lopez sister and brother team had a very impressive debut with SCORE and the 2023 SCORE San Felipe 250 with a fourth place finish out of a SCORE-record 30 starters in the Pro UTV FI class.
While the two siblings are still learning the skills for SCORE, Juan C. Lopez has several SCORE class wins, including Class 8 in the 2010 SCORE San Felipe 250.
Juan C. Lopez also has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, including 2017 as the second driver for his eldest son Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez when the father/son team won the iconic 50th SCORE Baja 1000 that was a peninsula run from Ensenada to La Paz.
WHY NOTT
Australia’s Kevy Nott has answered the question, ‘Why not’ and returned from the Land Down Under to attempt another SCORE Baja race.
Nott, 45, from Brisbane, Queensland, is a veteran Aussie off-road race who brought his right-handed-steering-wheel open wheel desert race car to last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 where he finished a more-than-respectable fourth place in the unlimited Class 1.
A solo driver, Nott will be attempting another solid finish in the SCORE Baja 500 in his No. 178 Element-Chevy, built in Australia by Element Prodigy. Stuart Bishop, also of Australia, returns as his long-time navigator.
2022 SCORE OVERALL OPEN-WHEEL
Mexico's J. David Ruvalcaba, 50, of Ensenada, who won Class 10 in 2022, was also the 2022 SCORE Overall Open-Wheel point champion and was eighth in overall points.
A former SCORE motorcycle champion racer, Ruvalcaba was sixth place last year in his class of 19 starters in San Felipe and 11th place out of 26 starters in Ensenada in June, won Class 10 out of 18 starters in Ensenada in September and was third in Ensenada in November out of 23 starters in his No. 1009 Alumi Craft-Honda open-wheel desert race car. As reigning class point champion, his vehicle this year carries the No. 1000.
His primary second driver is Esteban Cruz, 51, also of Ensenada. The Lomitas Racing Team picked up their fourth SCORE season class point crown in 2022 (2000, 2001, 2019, 2022).
They won on motorcycles the first two times, in Class 1/2-1600 in 2019 and Class 10 in 2022.
Ruvalcaba opened the 2023 season by finishing 12th out of 19 starters in San Felipe as a variety of mechanical issues slowed him down considerably.
BAJA CHALLENGE
Looking to earn a four-peat as the Baja Challenge class season point champion, Edward Muncey is once again driver of record in his No. BC4 Subaru-powered BTC (Baja Touring Car) open-wheel desert race car.
With a variety of additional drivers over the years, including several family members and several retired military personnel, Muncey, 52, San Diego, will have his son Dominic Muncey, 20, as his second driver in the SCORE Baja 500.
His brother and long-time second driver Roger Norman, 59, San Diego, has decided to run a solo season in the Pro UTV Open class in his No. 1888 Norman Motorsports Polaris Pro R race vehicle. Norman has two career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, both in 2008.
Last season, Muncey opened with a second-place in class in San Felipe and followed that podium finish by winning his Baja Challenge class in the next two races and finished second in the SCORE Baja 1000 to earn his third consecutive class season point title.
Muncey spent 11 years as the Senior Vice-President, Technology for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and now is part of Stream Enforcement, LLC in Las Vegas.
In the 2023 season opener, Muncey finished second in the Baja Challenge class.
TEAM BELTRAN
Mexico’s SCORE veteran motorcycle champion Fernando Beltran, 46, of Ensenada, has picked up in 2023 where he left off all of 2022, winning Pro Moto Limited in San Felipe.
Beltran has won his class seven times since 2021, including all four in 2022 in his Pro Moto Limited class and currently has three career SCORE season point championships (2014, 2020, 2022) as well as three class wins in the SCORE Baja 500 (2015, 2020, 2022).
Beltran leads his talented team on his No. 100x Honda CRF450x motorcycle.
Co-riders for this year’s SCORE Baja 500 for Beltran will be Larry Serna, 27, San Diego, Luis Flores, 21, Mexicali, Mexico, Mauri Herrera, 24, Ensenada, Mexico, and Dilan Avalos, 17, N. Palm Springs, Calif.
IRON ZUNINO
Just when you think you might be able to pick the favorites in the grueling Pro Moto Ironman class for solo motorcycle riders, up pops a new race winner like Argentina’s Juan Zunino did at the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 in April.
Argentinian Zunino, 28, who lives in Mendoza, Florida, rides the No. 793x KTM XCF450.
In the season opener, he surprised a race-record field of 17 starters to cover the brutal 263.50-mile race course in six hours, 19 minutes, 32 seconds.
Following his big victory, where he was also the third overall motorcycle on elapsed time, Zunino reflected, “The race went really well. It was really difficult, a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. A lot of whoops and rocks everywhere. I was able to get in a rhythm that I liked and I was able to push forward so I’m really happy. I tried to stay steady and not commit any errors or have any falls. I tried to maintain the rhythm and concentration. It's my first-time doing Ironman. It's been a dream of mine to do and I’m really happy that I was able to do it because I’ve trained a lot for it. Even though it's only 263.50 miles, the race is long. I didn't stop to rest anywhere, just to fuel up and hydrate. The course was really torn up and aggressive, but we were able to triumph.”
START ORDER/DRAW DEADLINE
The starting order within each class for this race is being determined by the individual finishes at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, if the individual entry is received and all fees paid in full by 5 p.m. this Friday (May 19).
All entries received and paid in full by Friday (May 19) who didn’t race in San Felipe, will be part of a drawing to determine the remainder of the start order within each class. The draw results will be posted on the SCORE website at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, May 26.
Up until and 5 p.m. PT on May 24, entries will be continue accepted in person only at the SCORE Ensenada. Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (May 31-June 2).
All entries received after 5 p.m. PT on Friday (May 19), including on-site, late entries, will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 473.67-mile race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday, May 20 starting at race mile 33.78. The section to rm33.38 section will be open only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only on Friday (June 2). Outbound pre-running on Friday (June 2) will start at rm4.90 to rm33.38. No inbound pre-running of this section.
The official SCORE Racer Brief, Penalty brief, course map and GPS files will be available by 6 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 18 on the SCORE website under race info/SCORE Baja 500.
COURSE PREVIEW
With pre-running opening on Saturday, May 20 for the BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva is putting together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The distance will be 473.67 miles around the northern part of the Baja California Peninsula. It will run in a clockwise direction over towards the Sea of Cortez back to run along the Pacific Ocean and back through Ojos Negros to the finish.
The Sportsman classes, Class 11 and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of 440.72 miles.
It will start and finish once again on Blvd. Costero adjacent to the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
Colorful Contingency and Tech Inspection will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
ON-SITE RACER REGISTRATION
Being held in the Salon Rojo at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada, regular on-site and late racer registration will be held on Wednesday (May 31) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT, on Thursday (June 1) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on Friday (June 2) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. on Wednesday (May 31), 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (June 1) and 4 p.m. PT on Friday (June 2).
GRAN HISTORIA
This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship includes another special tribute to the iconic SCORE Baja 500.
The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. After NORRA was removed from Baja after the 1972 race, the local Baja Sports Committee produced the 1973 event. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the event starting in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the SCORE Baja 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE in December of 2012.
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada as the first of nearly 165 SCORE Baja races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 500 will start for the 49th time in Ensenada and finish for the 45th time in Ensenada.

This year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 overall victory by San Diego’s Luke McMillin marked the 103rd SCORE Baja overall race win for BFGoodrich Tires.
BFGoodrich Tires has posted a contingency bonus for the overall winner of this year’s race of US$10,000.

GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR GOLDEN YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 tomorrow (May 2), is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.
He expanded TV coverage of SCORE races and in 1994 created the SCORE Trophy Truck class, the marquee racing division in the sport of desert racing.
SCORE BAJA 500 GRAND MARSHALS
SCORE has announced that Ivan Stewart, Alpine, Calif., and Johnny Campbell will be the co-Grand Marshals for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500.
When it comes to desert racing there is only one ‘Ironman’ standing at the top of the list of solo drivers/riders. San Diego’s iconic Ivan ‘Ironman’ will be celebrating his 78th birthday on June 4, during the conclusion of this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
The ‘Ironman’ celebrated his birthday annually over the years with 17 career class wins including a race-record 10 overall 4-wheel vehicle victories in the SCORE Baja 500.
The legendary Stewart has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006), the San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Hall of Fame (2009) and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2020). Driving most of his career for Toyota Motorcycles, Stewart continues as a spokesperson for Toyota Racing Development.
Campbell, 52, San Clemente, Calif., is a stellar SCORE motorcycle racing champion with six career class wins including five overall victories in the SCORE Baja 500. He also has a race-record 11 overall motorcycle victories in the SCORE Baja 1000 on his resume.
Campbell is also an 11-time SCORE season point champion in the Pro Moto Unlimited class on his Honda CRF450X. He also rode in the 2001 Dakar Rally, finishing eighth overall.
Campbell has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2018) and the Trailblazers MC Hall of Fame (2021).
Today he continues as the Off-Road Coordinator for American Honda in addition to running his own successful team—Johnny Campbell Racing/Honda (JCR) with several top desert motorcycle racers.
