ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico – ‘Celebrating 50 Years of SCORE Desert Racing Excellence’ this year, among the recent entries to date for this month’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500 are Ciaran Naran, Faelly Lopez, PJ Jones, Brendan Gaughan, Damen Jefferies, Oliver Flemate, and Juan Montoya.
Round 2 of the four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held May 31-June 4 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Ensenada, ‘The Off-Road Capital of the World,’ is located 80 miles South of the U.S. Border near San Diego.
PRE-RUNNING
Official practice, or pre-running, on the official 473.67-mile race course for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500, will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Saturday (May 20) starting at race mile 33.41. The section to rm33.41 section will be open only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only on Friday (June 2). Outbound pre-running on Friday (June 2) will start at rm4.89 to rm33.41. No inbound pre-running of this section.

THE RACE
With over 300 entries expected from 30 U.S. States and 20 countries, 45 competition classes are offered for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads.
Most the world’s best desert racers will be in action at this year’s celebration of one of the top 10 motorsports events in the entire world.
All four 2023 SCORE races are being held on Mexico’s magnificent Baja California peninsula for the eighth consecutive year.
SCORE, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, is celebrating its 50th season in 2023.
ENTRIES
     With over 300 entries anticipated at the start line, 214 total entries have been received so far for this historic event, with racers representing 25 U.S. States, U.S. Territory Puerto Rico, and 11 countries. The countries with at least one racer so far are United States, host country Mexico, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Finland, Japan, New Zealand, and Peru.
DOUBLE DIGITS
With double-digit entries to date are the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck (high-tech, unlimited, 1000-horsepower, custom trucks) with 31 (including six in SCORE TT Legend for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50), Trophy Truck Spec, (SCORE Trophy Trucks with crate engines) with 28, Class 10 with 14, Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) with 19, Pro UTV Open with 19, and Pro UTV Stock with 10.
Among 2-wheel vehicles, Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) has 11 entries.

COURSE PREVIEW
     With pre-running opening on Saturday (May 20), SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva has put together another memorable race course to challenge the world’s best desert racers. The final distance is 473.67 miles.
It will be starting and finishing again on fan-friendly Blvd. Costero adjacent to the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada. Pre-race Contingency will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
The course runs in a clockwise direction out of and back to the start/finish line compound in Ensenada, traveling through such noted areas as Ojos Negros, Santa Catarina, the Summit, Cohabuzo Junction, Saldana, La Ventana access, Las Cuevitas Wash, San Matias Pass, Valle de Trinidad, Llano Colorado, Cerro Solo, San Vicente Wash, Erendira, Santo Tomas, Uruapan, Los Encinitos, Rancho El Mezcal and Ojos Negros.
The course has two complete stop physical checkpoints, 187 total virtual checkpoints and 13 speed zones for a total of 58.27 miles.
Checkpoint 1 is located at race mile 211.62 (Laguna Amarga) and Checkpoint 2 is at rm326.64 (Llano Colorado).
All Sportsman classes, Class 11 and Class 7SX will run a reduced course of a total of 440.72 miles.
This will be the first time since the 2016 SCORE Baja 1000 that a SCORE race course has gone over the Summit (around race mile 108.23) and it will be the first time since the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000 that the course will go through Ejido Nativos between Erendira and Santo Tomas.
Colorful Contingency and Tech Inspection will also be held on Blvd. Costero on Friday, June 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
NEW MOTO MAN
Ciaran Naran, 23, Huntington Beach, Calif., is new as a rider of record, but he is an experienced SCORE Baja motorcycle co-rider.
In the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250, Naran, won the Pro Moto Unlimited class on the No. 3x Husqvarna FE450 with Tucker Hopkins, 28, Venice Beach, Calif. as his second rider.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Naran and Hopkins will be joined by Forrest Minchinton, 31, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Nick Lapaglia, 28, Murrieta, Calif.
Last year, Minchinton was the Rider of Record and the team finished third in the Pro Moto Unlimited season points which included a second-place finish in the 2022 SCORE Baja 500.
After his first victory, Naran commented at the finish line in San Felipe, “The first half of the race that I rode was really good. I came in knowing ‘just keep the wheels on the ground, we don’t need crazy speed’. San Felipe can bite you easily, so I just wanted to make sure the bike kept moving and going forward, that was the game plan. We executed it well. The dust wasn’t too bad this morning, luckily, so I made some passes quickly. I think I got into fourth within ten or fifteen miles. Then I just kept trucking forward and got third, second, first. It happened smooth and efficient, can’t complain. It was good to have someone like Colton Udall (multi-time SCORE race champion), who is very experienced down here, helping guide us and with pit strategy and guiding us through this adventure. Down here in Baja it isn’t racing other people, it is racing Baja. That is what Colton has always taught me. So, it is great having someone like that guide me and point me in the right direction. It helps me stay safe and be more prepared, so I’m not doing any danger to myself. It is unreal to know that we are the second Husqvarna bike to ever win down here. That is cool, we made some history down here.”
EL NOVATO NO MAS
From San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, strongman Faelly Lopez was voted the 2022 SCORE Rookie of the Year in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship and he was competing in just the first full season of the Pro Quad Ironman class for solo riders.
Lopez, 39, started 2022 by winning his class in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 on his No. 83a Honda TRX450R. The ‘Puerto Rican Force’ covered the 277.00-mile race course in 9:47:10.
After not being able to finish his first SCORE race at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 that went down the peninsula from Ensenada to La Paz, Lopez recovered and won SCORE’s newest class in 2022 in the first three 2022 SCORE races and eventually won SCORE Pro Quad Ironman season point championship.
Lopez joined previous winners of the SCORE top rookie award like Frank Vessels (1974), Jimmie Johnson (1995), Ricky Johnson (1993), Robby Gordon (1987), Doug Fortin Jr (1988), Bekki Freeman-Wik (1998), Andy McMillin (2004), Brian Wilson (2009), Luke McMillin (2010), Bryce Menzies (2011), Tony Gera (2014), Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2015), Chad Broughton (2016), Broc Dickerson (2017), A.J. Jones (2019) and Cayden MacCachren (2021).
Lopez started the 2023 season in San Felipe by winning his Pro Quad Ironman class for the second straight year.
PJ JONES
Son of a legend, PJ Jones has carved his own niche as a race-car driver while racing in the shadow of his very famous father Parnelli Jones, a former Indy 500 and SCORE Baja 500 winner. The younger Jones races in the Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class.
PJ Jones, 54, lives in Cave Creek, Ariz. and his driving career includes multiple disciplines of motorsports including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, American Le Mans Series, USAC, the Chili Bowl and Robby Gordon’s Stadium Super Trucks.
A regular in SCORE Baja racing, he owns PJ’s Performance in Scottsdale, Ariz. In the SCORE Baja 500 PJ Jones will be the driver of record in the No. 2998 Can-Am X3.
In the San Felipe 2022 season opener, PJ Jones finished on the podium in third place out of 29 starters in his class.  In the 2022 SCORE Baja 500 he finished 13th in class out of 24 starters. After not racing in last year’s SCORE Baja 400, he finished the 2022 SCORE season with a sixth-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.
Jones splits the driving with Kyle Vestermark, 53, Aliso Viejo, Calif. The pair opened their 2023 SCORE season with a third place finish out of a SCORE-record 30 starters in Pro UTV FI in the SCORE San Felipe 250.
CITY LIGHTS SHINE
Prominent Las Vegas businessman, former NASCAR star and second-generation desert racer Brendan Gaughan has returned his desert racing roots again as he has entered the unlimited Class 1 for this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
The gregarious and very personable Gaughan, 47, is a veteran of 23 years of driving in NASCAR’s three elite division including the top tier Cup Series along with the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Truck Series.
In 2019 Gaughan returned to his roots for an emotional Class 1 victory in the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Also driving that race with Gaughan were R.J. Anderson, Buddy Feldkamp and Billy Gereghty.
Driving South Point Hotel/Casino (Las Vegas) vehicles, Gaughan had 67 starts over nine seasons in the Cup series, 219 starts over 10 seasons in the Xfinity series and 217 in the Truck series over 14 seasons. He retired from NASCAR racing officially after the 2020 season.
Gaughan, who also is a part of numerous national radio programs, is the son of legendary Las Vegas hotel/casino magnate and former SCORE champion and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Michael Gaughan.
Owner of City Lights Shine (17A distillery) in Las Vegas, Gaughan will be the driver of record in the No. 162 South Point Hotel HMS-Chevy. Gaughan is also an administrative executive at the South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.
CLS (produced by 17A Stillery) is the first and only legal distillery in the history of Las Vegas.
Gaughan was plagued with issues last year of various kinds and had four very unfortunate DNFs.
Unfortunately, his 2023 season also started with another DNF for the popular Gaughan.
For the SCORE Baja 500, Gaughan has listed two additional veteran drivers—second gen racer Buddy Feldkamp, 45, Redlands, Calif., and Las Vegas’ Billy Goerke, 48.
JEFFERIES
Veteran SCORE champion racer Damen Jefferies, 50, Poolville, Texas (Apple Valley, Calif.) is entered in the Unlimited Class 1 in his No. 121 Jefferies-Chevy.
His additional drivers for this race are Josh Burman, 35, Poolville, Texas, and Mike Duenas, 56, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
Racing in multiple classes over his lengthy SCORE racing career Jefferies has won three career SCORE season class point championships—1994 in Class 9, 1997 in Class 1/2-1600 and 1998 in Class 10. He has also built several race vehicles including a SCORE Trophy Truck that he raced for a few years.
In his SCORE career Jefferies has one SCORE Baja 500 class victory, winning Class 1/2-1600 in 1997.
3 FOR FLEMATE
It will obviously take a lot of help from his friends, but prominent Ensenada entrepreneur Oliver Flemate, 46, wants to triple his pleasure as has entered an unprecedented three classes as the driver of record for this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
Flemate will be the primary driver in a vehicle in Trophy Truck Spec, SCORE Lite and Class 11. He warmed up for this Herculean effort by racing in two classes in the San Felipe open, winning Class 11 and finishing 17th out of a SCORE-record 43 starters in the Trophy Truck Spec class.
Helping with driving for Flemate in the Trophy Truck Spec class will be his daughter, Ana Paula Flemate, 17, Ensenada, Mexico and Luis Magana, 30, Ensenada, Mexico, in the No. 244 TSCO-Chevy.
     His additional drivers in SCORE Lites will be Patricio Flores, 42, Ensenada, Mexico, Oscar Guevara, 36, Ensenada, Mexico, and Jouth Ochoa, 25, Ensenada, Mexico, in the No. 1203 Record-VW.
In Class 11, additional drivers for Flemate will be Antonio Espinoza, 29, Ensenada, Mexico, Valentin Marcado, 45, Ensenada, Mexico and Israel Arce, 45, Ensenada, Mexico, in the team’s No. 1105 VW Sedan.
In last year’s SCORE Baja 500, Flemate won the SCORE Lites class.
PERU’S MONTOYA
Veteran SCORE motorcycle champion Jano Montoya, 51, enters this year’s as the rider of record again with his team in the Pro Moto 30 class for riders over 30 years old. In the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship, Montoya and company won the class in the first three races and finished second in the finale to earn another season point champion.
Montoya, originally from Peru but currently lives in Winter Park, Fla., now has four career SCORE season class point titles (2016, 2017, 2018, 2022).
Riding as teammates with Montoya for this year’s SCORE Baja 500 will be Kyle Tichenor, 31, Mesquite, Nev., and David Zarate, 35, La Paz, Mexico. This same trio won the Pro Moto 30 class at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250.
In the SCORE Baja 500, Montoya has five class wins (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 in Pro Moto 40 and 2022 in Pro Moto 30).
For the SCORE Baja 500, Montoya and his team will be riding on the No. 300x KTM 450EXC motorcycle.
LATE REGISTRATION
The starting order within each class for this race is being determined by the individual finishes at this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, if the individual entry is received and all fees paid in full by 5 p.m. this Friday (May 19).
All entries received and paid in full by Friday (May 19) who did not race in San Felipe, will be part of a drawing to determine the remainder of the start order within each class. The draw results will be posted on the SCORE website at 6 p.m. PT on Friday, May 26.
Up until 5 p.m. PT on May 24, entries will continue to accepted in person only at the SCORE Ensenada. Late, on-site racer registration will be held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (May 31-June 2).
All entries received after 5 p.m. PT on Friday (May 19), including on-site, late entries, will be given the next available starting position within their respective classes.
ON-SITE RACER REGISTRATION
Being held in the Salon Rojo at the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in Ensenada, regular on-site and late racer registration will be held on Wednesday (May 31) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT, on Thursday (June 1) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT and on Friday (June 2) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No new entries will be accepted after 7 p.m. on Wednesday (May 31), 4 p.m. PT on Thursday (June 1) and 4 p.m. PT on Friday (June 2).
GRAN HISTORIA
This year’s SCORE World Desert Championship includes another special tribute to the iconic SCORE Baja 500.
The SCORE Baja 500 is one of the top motorsports events in the world. It was started originally in 1969 by the NORRA organization. After NORRA was removed from Baja after the 1972 race, the local Baja Sports Committee produced the 1973 event. Mickey Thompson and his SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the event starting in 1974. Sal Fish ran and later owned and produced the SCORE Baja 500 for 39 years until he sold SCORE in December of 2012.
The first Baja 500 organized and produced by SCORE was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada as the first of nearly 165 SCORE Baja races.
This year’s SCORE Baja 500 will start for the 49th time in Ensenada and finish for the 45th time in Ensenada.

GRANDEST MARSHAL FOR GOLDEN YEAR
Sal Fish, admired as the iconic ‘godfather’ of SCORE desert racing who is a foundational pillar of the organization, is the Grand Marshal of the Year for the entire four-race 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Revered all over Baja California, Fish, who will turn 84 tomorrow (May 2), is a former publisher of Hot Rod Magazine and a 2006 inductee into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. He led SCORE for 38 years, from 1974 until he sold the organization on Dec. 20, 2012.
His footprint left an indelible mark on all of desert racing as he was an extraordinary innovator and visionary for SCORE and the entire world of desert racing.
He expanded TV coverage of SCORE races and in 1994 created the SCORE Trophy Truck class, the marquee racing division in the sport of desert racing.
SCORE BAJA 500 GRAND MARSHALS
     SCORE has announced that Ivan Stewart, Alpine, Calif., and Johnny Campbell will be the co-Grand Marshals for this year’s BFGoodrich Tires 55th SCORE Baja 500.
When it comes to desert racing there is only one ‘Ironman’ standing at the top of the list of solo drivers/riders. San Diego’s iconic Ivan ‘Ironman’ will be celebrating his 78th birthday on June 4, during the conclusion of this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
The ‘Ironman’ celebrated his birthday annually over the years with 17 career class wins including a race-record 10 overall 4-wheel vehicle victories in the SCORE Baja 500.
The legendary Stewart has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2006), the San Diego Hall of Champions Breitbard Hall of Fame (2009) and the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2020). Driving most of his career for Toyota Motorcycles, Stewart continues as a spokesperson for Toyota Racing Development.
Campbell, 52, San Clemente, Calif., is a stellar SCORE motorcycle racing champion with six career class wins including five overall victories in the SCORE Baja 500. He also has a race-record 11 overall motorcycle victories in the SCORE Baja 1000 on his resume.
Campbell is also an 11-time SCORE season point champion in the Pro Moto Unlimited class on his Honda CRF450X. He also rode in the 2001 Dakar Rally, finishing eighth overall.
Campbell has been inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (2018) and the Trailblazers MC Hall of Fame (2021).
Today he continues as the Off-Road Coordinator for American Honda in addition to running his own successful team—Johnny Campbell Racing/Honda (JCR) with several top desert motorcycle racers.
