SEIS ‘LOS TERRIBLES’
One of the most legendary families in all of desert racing, the Herbst family has all its second and third generation as racers on the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Monster Energy team from Las Vegas entered for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000.
Started by family patriarch the late Jerry Herbst back in the 1970s and carrying through until the 2010s with brothers Ed, Tim, and Troy Herbst, and all the third generation of the Herbst boys have taken to desert racing. Six family members are entered in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 in five trucks.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000, Terrible Herbst Motorsports will have four of its Herbst/Smith Fab custom trucks in the starting grid, one in SCORE Trophy Truck and three in Trophy Truck Spec with five Herbst family drivers in the race.
Ed Herbst, the oldest brother at 62, is an additional driver in this year’s race for Las Vegas’ Mark Post, 65, in the No. 3L Riviera Racing Ford F-150 in the SCORE TT Legend class for drivers over 50 years old.
Driver of record in the No. 19 Monster Energy Ford F-150 in SCORE Trophy Truck will be Tim Herbst, 60, who will share driving duties with another celebrated second-gen desert racer from Las Vegas, Pat Dean, 54, and Pat’s son James Dean, 27, also of Las Vegas.

His second driver will be his multi-time SCORE-champion father Troy Herbst, 59, Las Vegas and Jordan Dean, 25, also of Las Vegas and the son of Pat Dean, who is racing with Tim Herbst in SCORE Trophy Truck.
Riley Herbst finished his fourth season as a regular driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series by finishing 13th in the regular season points, just one place away from making the playoffs. Driving for Stewart-Haas Racing, he has had seven top five finishes and 14 top 10s this season and won his first series race last Saturday (Oct. 14) on his hometown track—the 1.5-mile superspeedway at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was his 139th career NASCAR Xfinity series race.

In the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship, Montoya and company won the class in the first three races and finished second in the finale to earn another season point champion.
Montoya, originally from Peru but currently lives in Winter Park, Fla., now has four career SCORE motorcycle season class point titles (2016, 2017, 2018, 2022).
Riding as teammates with Montoya for this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 will be Kyle Tichenor, 31, Mesquite, Nev., David Zarate, 35, La Paz, Mexico, and Ramon Davila, 32, La Paz, Mexico. In the SCORE Baja 1000, Montoya won the Pro Moto 40 class in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
For the SCORE Baja 1000, Montoya and his team will be riding on the No. 300x KTM 450EXC motorcycle.
HONDA OFF-ROAD RACING TEAM
For the 2023 season, team principal and multi-time SCORE race champion Jeff Proctor, Glendora, Calif. has stepped out of the driver’s seat this year for health reasons and is devoting his full-time efforts to managing the Honda Off-Road Racing Team which has two entries in the 2023 SCORE Baja 1000…
-Zach Sizelove
Driving the No. 1925 Honda Talon 1000R in the Pro UTV NA class, Zach Sizelove, 29, Hesperia, Calif., is running a limited SCORE schedule again this year.
Sizelove won his class in this year’s SCORE Baja 500.
Sizelove has raced for several years with his family in the SoCal High Desert evening building Class 1/2-1600 cars with his father. In his SCORE debut in San Felipe in 2021, he finished sixth out of 12 starters in his class in his first SCORE Baja race in the Honda Talon.
In the 2022 SCORE Baja 500 he also finished on top of the podium in first place.
In his other SCORE race last year, Sizelove finished second in the Pro UTV NA class in the SCORE Baja 1000 with Ethan Eberts as his second driver.
-Ethan Ebert
After racing last year in the Pro UTV NA class, Ethan Ebert, 17, Marana, Ariz., moved up in class to take over Driver of Record duties for team principal Jeff Proctor in Class 7. Ebert, who has been race short course off-road since he was nine years old, split the driving in the team’s HRD No. 709 Honda Ridgeline with Rich Glasczak, 48, Oceanside, Calif., and won their class in the race.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 1000, Ebert, with Glasczak as his second driver, will debut the new No. 9 Honda Ridgeline twin-turbo in SCORE Trophy Truck. Also expected to drive are veteran SCORE racers Bobby Smith, El Cajon, Calif., and Chip Prescott, Fallbrook, Calif.
A short course veteran who competed successfully in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series and Great American Shortcourse, Ebert became a Honda development driver in 2021 and has spent the last two seasons with the Honda Talon department.
Ebert began competing in SCORE races in 2022 starting with the SCORE Baja 500, where he finished fifth in the Pro UTV Normally Aspirated class. At the SCORE Baja 1000, he teamed up with Honda partner Zach Sizelove to finish in second place.
BOLIVIA’S FAB FUENTES
Still a relative newcomer to SCORE racing, Fabricio Fuentes, 46, is a highly accomplished and well-known motorcycle racer from Villa Montes, Bolivia. The affable Fuentes, known for his trademark special Bolivian Sombrero he wears at the races, is a six-time Dakar Rally veteran. In his last Dakar, he was the 39th overall motorcycle in the legendary Rally.
Fuentes is also a multi-time national motorcycle champion in Bolivia and has remained in the Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders even though his compatriot Juan Carlos Salvatierra switched last year to the Pro Moto Unlimited class after two years competing in and winning the title in the same class.
Fuentes finished second in the 2021 SCORE Pro Moto Ironman class point standings and was also second to Bolivian teammate Salvatierra in the 2021 SCORE Baja 400.
In the 2023 SCORE 1000, Fuentes will ride the No. 785x Gas Gas EC350F motorcycle.
In 2022, Fuentes was fifth in the Pro Moto Ironman season point standings following a third-place podium finish in San Felipe, a rare did-not-finish (DNF) in the SCORE Baja 500, another third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 400 and a fourth-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000.
In San Felipe this year, Fuentes finished ninth out of a race-record 17 starters in Pro Moto Ironman. He then finished fourth in class in the SCORE Baja 500, followed by a podium, third-place finish in this year’s SCORE Baja 400. He enters the SCORE Baja 1000 in second-place in the Pro Moto Ironman season point standings out of 23 total starters.
CHAMPS X2
Racing together this year are two former SCORE class point champions, Oscar Alvarez and Doug Satterfield are racing together this year in the SCORE Lites class.
Driving Alvarez’s No. 1211 OSO-VW, Alvarez, 46, of McAllen, Texas, and San Diego’s Satterfield, 45, finished third in class in San Felipe this year to start the 2023 season. The pair backed that up by winning their class in the 2023 SCORE Baja 500 to catapult them into the class point lead, and backed that up with another class win in the SCORE Baja 400.
Alvarez has finished second in SCORE Lites season points the past two years and he won the season class crown in 2018 in Class 1/2-1600.
Satterfield won the SCORE Lite season point title in 2021 in a year that also saw him win two races in his class.
Last year, the Alvarez/Satterfield duo, had a rare did-not-finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 in SCORE Lites.
NEW MOTO MAN
Ciaran Naran, 23, Huntington Beach, Calif., is new as a rider of record, but he is an experienced SCORE Baja motorcycle co-rider. And his team is leading this year’s Pro Moto Unlimited class point standings after the three two races of 2023.
In the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250, Naran, won the Pro Moto Unlimited class on the No. 3x Husqvarna FE450 with Tucker Hopkins, 28, Venice Beach, Calif. as his second rider.
For this year’s SCORE Baja 500, Naran was joined by Forrest Minchinton, 31, Huntington Beach, Calif., Derek Ausserbauer, 28, Venice Beach, Calif., and Nick Lapaglia, 28, Murrieta, Calif., where they finished third in class.
In this year’s SCORE Baja 400, Naran had the same four-rider team as the SCORE Baja 500 and a fifth-place finish kept him in the lead in Pro Moto Unlimited class point standings by three points over the Juan Carlos Salvatierra team.
Naran will have the same four-rider team for the SCORE Baja 1000 as he did for the SCORE Baja 400.
Last year, Minchinton was the Rider of Record and the team finished third in the Pro Moto Unlimited season points which included a second-place finish in the 2022 SCORE Baja 500.
SENIOR STATESMAN
