RENO, Nev., USA—Aided by a race-high 22 starters in his class, Todd Winslow’s Class 10 win at the recent 30th SCORE San Felipe 250 in Mexico has also launched him into the SCORE Overall point lead after round 1 of the four-race 2016 SCORE World Desert Championship.
FAMILY TIME
Owner of an agricultural commodities company in Clovis, Calif., Winslow, who has made SCORE desert racing a family adventure, currently has 82 season points in his No. 1081 Creative Ingredients Racing Chevy-powered Alumi Craft open-wheel desert race car. Winslow, 51, splits driving time with his son Matt, 22, while his wife and his two daughters are all part of the race crew for their Central California desert racing team. The Winslows also finished sixth overall among four-wheel vehicles in San Felipe.
“We really love Mexico and SCORE Baja racing has become a family pastime,” said Todd Winslow, who raced in several motorcycle classes in SCORE Baja racing for nearly a decade before moving to Class 10. “You know what they say, ‘with age comes the cage’ and my son is in college and this gives him a much safer why of racing while getting his degree and keeps our family doing something that we enjoy so much together.”
Last year the Winslow father/son team finished fourth in Class 10 season points. Their season included their first race win at the SCORE Imperial Valley 250 where they finished second overall, a third in last year’s SCORE San Felipe 250 and a third in last year’s SCORE Baja 500 before their championship hopes were dashed at the SCORE Baja 1000.
At around race-mile 107, a purpose-built ditch caused Todd Wilson’s vehicle to roll four times. “We were very fortunate not to have been hurt when I hit that ‘booby trap’ on the race course in an area where I had pre-run. It was a real testament though to the durability of the Alumi Craft chassis and the significant value of the SCORE safety rules for the race vehicles. We did become youtube celebrities and that’s okay because we weren’t hurt. I will definitely slow down the next time I come up on a large group of spectators in an open spot out on the course.”
In this year’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Todd Winslow drove the first 154 miles and turned the wheel over in fourth place to his son Matt, a student at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif., who passed the remaining three Class 10 cars to pull out the victory for the Winslow family race team.
POINT REGS
SCORE point regulations for 2016 has all four-races counting for final points, with three minimum, and one of the four races SCORE World Desert Championship that is mandatory to qualify for a class season point championship is for the driver/rider of record to start or finish the SCORE Baja 1000.
SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for a particular race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within the racer’s class.
