ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—What was a forgone conclusion based on his winning the season opener in April, Las Vegas’ Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Rob MacCachren will drive the first SCORE Trophy Truck to start the 4-wheel portion and Justin  Morgan, El Cajon, Calif., will ride the first motorcycle to start the first portion of next week’s Golden Anniversary of the legendary BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500.
Pre-running on the rugged, race-record 542.12-mile course continues through Friday (June 1).
Round 2 of the four-race 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship will be held next Tuesday through Sunday (May 29-June 3). The celebratory internationally-televised race will start and finish in Ensenada, the seaside port on the Pacific Ocean, located 80 miles south of San Diego.
THE SCOOP
It is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday (June 2) will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 3:30 a.m. (PDT) and approximately 8 a.m. (PDT) for the cars, trucks and UTVs. While the fastest vehicles are expected to finish in around 11 hours, all vehicles will have a 22-hour time limit from the time each starts to become an official finisher.
Nearly 350 vehicles, in classes for cars, trucks, utvs, motorcycles and quads, are expected at the start line with racers from as many as 35 U.S. States and 20 countries anticipated.
Race title sponsor BFGoodrich Tires has posted a US$25,000 contingency bonus to help commemorate this year’s race. King Shocks has posted an US$5,000 contingency bonus, Rancho Drivetrain Engineering is offering a $20,000 transmission as a contingency bonus and Tri-Ace Tires is also offering a US$25,000 contingency bonus.
START DRAW
SCORE announced prior to the start of the 2018 season that the finishing order from April’s 32nd SCORE San Felipe 250 would determine the start order for this race for those that raced in San Felipe and entered this race in time. Separate drawings were held for entries that did not finish in San Felipe and another start draw for all entries that didn’t race in San Felipe.
After winning the season-opener for his 16th career SCORE Trophy Truck win, MacCachren will start first in his No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-250 (builder Geiser Bros).  Based on the finishing order in San Felipe, following MacCachren into the Baja desert will be Cameron Steele, second in the No. 16 Monster Energy Desert Assassins Chevy Silverado (Geiser) and after that three third-generation members of San Diego’s McMillin ‘Dynasty in the Desert’ will start third, fourth and sixth.
Third off the line will be Luke McMillin, 25, of San Diego, in the No. 83 Ford-150 (Racer), fourth will be defending SCORE Baja 500 overall champion Andy McMillin, 31, of San Diego, in the No. 31 Chevy Silverado (Mason) and the sixth starter will be the team of Dan McMillin, 30, of La Mesa, Calif./Larry Roeseler, 61, Boulevard, Calif., in the No. 23 Ford F-150 (Racer).
Starting fifth will be Ryan Arciero, 44, Lake Forest, Calif., in the No. 32 Ford F-150 (Herbst-Smith).
For the motorcycles, Morgan and co-riders Mark Samuels, Yucca Valley, Calif. and Justin Jones, Murrieta, Calif., will be the first vehicle off the line in their No. 7x Monster Energy Honda CRF450X.
