    ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—Veteran champion desert racer Wayne Matlock, Alpine, Calif. drove solo for the entire 1,802.68 rugged desert miles to become the first UTV racer to win the SCORE Overall Point season championship, capturing the title in the four-race 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship.


    Tied in the SCORE overall point’s race for 2018 with eventual SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas entering November’s season-ending 51st SCORE Baja 1000, Matlock capped his remarkable season with his solo drive to the 2018 SCORE Overall and his extremely popular Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class.


SCORE AWARDS NIGHT


    A night of champions will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2018 at the San Diego Air and Space Museum at Balboa Park.


     The evening will salute the champions of the 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship as well as honoring the 2018 SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year award winners and recognizing the 43 winners of the 2018 SCORE Milestone awards.


    Doors will open at 6 p.m. PT with a cocktail reception followed by dinner at 7 p.m. PT and the awards at 7:30 p.m. PT. The awards will be streamed live around the world on the Internet through the SCORE Live platform at www.score-international.com.


MATLOCK MASTERPIECE


     Matlock, 40, whose wife Kristen finish third in points with two race wins this season in the Pro UTV NA (Naturally Aspirated) class, won the first and last races of the year as well and finished second in both the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Desert Challenge to earn his 434 total season points to break the tie with MacCachren in the hunt for the coveted SCORE Overall season point championship as well as winning his Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class.


     A champion SCORE quad racer earlier in his career, Matlock drove solo in the No. 2971 Polaris RZR XP Turbo UTV in his amazing championship season. While earning his class title, Matlock edged out MacCachren by just nine points to earn his first SCORE Overall season point crown.


     Matlock’s Pro UTV FI season title was also his sixth career SCORE season class point title.


     To climb the ladder to the pinnacle of the sport, Matlock had to first overcome 23 starters in his class in the season-opening 32nd SCORE San Felipe 250 and cap the season by defeating a field of 29 starters in the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 in his Pro UTV FI class. He also finished second out of 35 starters in the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 and second out of 19 starters in the Lucerna Hotels & Resorts Tijuana 22nd SCORE Desert Challenge in the middle of the four-race 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship.


MAC ATTACK


     With 312 career desert, short-course and off-road stadium victories, Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer MacCachren increased his overall lead in career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins to 17 with his two victories in the 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship.


     The masterful MacCachren opened the 2018 campaign by winning both the 32nd SCORE San Felipe 250 and the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500. MacCachren, 53, overcame a race-record 36 starters in San Felipe and 33 more starters in the SCORE Baja 500 in the class for high-tech, 950 horsepower unlimited custom trucks for the victories in his race-proven No. 11 Rockstar MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Truck built by Geiser Bros. of Phoenix. Using his one substitute driver for the SCORE Desert Challenge in Tijuana, MacCachren was credited with a second-place finish courtesy of his sub Justin B. Smith, also of Las Vegas.


     MacCachren kept the heat on in the hunt for the overall season point title and his third place finish in SCORE Trophy Truck (36 starters) earned him his ninth career SCORE season class point championship including his third in SCORE Trophy Truck (1994, 2007, 2018).


     In the 45th-year in the history of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division celebrated its 25th season of competition since former SCORE owner Sal Fish introduced the unique class to the motorsports world in 1994. SCORE Trophy Truck is the featured racing division in the sport for high-tech, 950-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks.


TOP SIX OVERALL FINAL LEADERS


     While Matlock and MacCachren finished at the top of the SCORE leader board, third in overall points and finishing second in SCORE Trophy Truck was veteran Cameron Steele, San Clemente, Calif. Steele, an action sports TV announcer, drove the No. 16 Monster Energy Desert Assassins Geiser-built Chevy Silverado.


     Racing in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division since 2005, Steele earned his first career win in the featured division at the recent SCORE Desert Challenge in Tijuana and capped his stellar season by earning the victory in the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000 as well. He had 405 season points


     Trophy Truck Spec racers finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 2018 SCORE Overall point standings.


     Winning the season point championship in Trophy Truck Spec with two race wins and 404 season points was Bryce Swaim  of El Cajon, Calif. Swaim won his class in this year’s 50th SCORE Baja 500 over 25 starters and the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 over 29 starters in his No. 242 TSCO-Chevy truck.  He was also second in class in the season opener in San Felipe and sixth in Tijuana.


     Second in Trophy Truck Spec and fifth in SCORE Overall points with two race wins in his class was William Hedrick Jr, Vicente Guerrero, Mexico, with 395 points in his No. 295 ID Designs Chevy Truck.


     Third in Trophy Truck Spec and sixth in SCORE Overall points in 2018 was Elias Hanna, Ensenada, Mexico, with 379 points in his No. 200 HN-Chevy 1500.


POINT REGS


     SCORE point regulations for 2018 once again had all four-races counting for final points, with three minimum, and one of the four races in the SCORE World Desert Championship that was mandatory to qualify for a class season point championship was for the driver/rider of record to start and/or finish the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.


     SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within the racer’s class.


MORGAN MOTORCYCLE MAGNIFICENCE


    The 2018 SCORE Overall Motorcycle and Pro Moto Unlimited class point champion after amazingly winning their class and the overall titles in all four races this year was the new team of Justin Morgan, 28, El Cajon, Calif./Mark Samuels, 28, Yucca Valley, Calif., with 376 points on their No. 7x Honda CRF450X.


    For their wins in the SCORE Baja 500 and the SCORE Baja 1000, the third rider on their team who helped them earn the coveted 1x plate for 2019 was Justin Jones, 27, Murrieta, Calif.


    This was the second season point title for Morgan and first as a rider of record and third for Samuel, all as a co-rider.


SCORE TROPHY TRUCK FINAL LEADERS


     Lined up behind Rob MacCachren and Cameron Steele in the final point standings in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division were more of the world’s top desert racers. The marquee class had 43 total racers compete in at least one race in 2018.


     Finishing third in SCORE Trophy Truck season points and 10th overall with 366 points was the team of Tim Herbst, Las Vegas and his brother Ed Herbst Las Vegas in the No. 19 Monster Energy Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford F-150 built by Herbst/Smith Fab.


     Fourth in SCORE Trophy Truck and 16th in overall points was the team of Chris Miller, La Jolla, Calif./Jimmy Nuckles, Brawley, Calif. with 357 points in the No. 40 Toyota Tundra built by ID Designs.


     Brothers Alan Ampudia, 27 and Aaron Ampudia, 25, of Ensenada, Mexico, finished fifth in SCORE Trophy Trucks with 333 points in their No. 10 Papa’s Y Beer ID-built Ford Raptor.


     Sixth, eighth and 12th in SCORE Trophy Truck points were three third-generation McMillin family racers of San Diego.


     Andy McMillin, 31, with 327 points in his No. 31 McMillin Racing Mason-built Chevy Silverado was sixth in SCORE Trophy Truck. Andy’s cousin Dan McMillin, 30, who had 319 points in his No. 23 Mark Racing Racer-built Ford F-150 finished eighth in class and Dan’s younger brother Luke McMillin, 25, ended up 12th in class with 262 points in his No. 83 Mark Racing Racer-built Ford F-150.


     Seventh in SCORE Trophy Truck points with 321 was three-time defending SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez, 23 of Tecate, Mexico, in the No. 1 RPM Racing Geiser-built Chevy Rally Truck.


     And ninth in the final SCORE Trophy Truck season points with 284 was Robby Gordon, Charlotte, N.C., in his No. 77 Custom-built Chevy Silverado.


     Completing the top 10 SCORE Trophy Truck 2018 point standings with 281 was Gary Magness, Denver, in the No. 45 Mango Racing custom-built Ford F-150.


10 CLASS LEADERS IN TOP 25 OVERALL


     Including Rob MacCachren in SCORE Trophy Truck, Wayne Matlock in Pro UTV FI, and Bryce Swaim in Trophy Truck Spec, a total of 10 classes had at least one racer in the final top 25 SCORE Overall 4-wheel point standings in the four-race 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship.


     The classes in the top 25 point standings are SCORE Trophy Truck (4 racers), Pro UTV FI (6), Trophy Truck Spec (4), Class 10 (3), Class 1/2-1600 (2), Pro UTV NA (2), along with one each class point leader in Heavy Metal, unlimited Class 1, SCORE Lites, and Class 7.


     Besides SCORE Trophy Truck, Pro UTV FI and Trophy Truck Spec other 2018 class point champions in the top 25 in the 2018 SCORE Overall points were Vincent Munoz, Yucaipa, Calif. in the No. 894 Ford Ranger (Heavy Metal, tied for 12th overall), Todd Winslow, Clovis, Calif. in the No. 1081 Alumi Craft Chevy (Class 10, 14th), Brad Wilson, Long  Beach, Calif., in the No. 153 Jimco-Chevy (Class 1, 15th overall), Kaden Wells, St. George, Utah, in the No. 1995 Polaris RZR (Pro UTV NA, 17th overall), Jeremy Davis, Chino Hills, Calif., in the No. 1258 Porter-VW (SCORE Lites, 18th overall), Oscar Alvarez, McAllen, Texas, in the No. 1603 Romo-VW (Class 1/2-1600, 20th overall) and Dan Chamlee, Montecito, Calif., in the No. 700 Ford Ranger (Class 7, tied for 22nd overall).


     For Brad Wilson, it was his second SCORE season class point title and for the veteran Chamlee it was his 14th career SCORE season point championship. For the other 2018 class champions in the top 25 it was their first SCORE season point crown.


     Winslow, who raced with his son Matt Winslow, was also the 2018 SCORE Overall open-wheel desert race car point champion.


THE UNDEFEATED


     Five racers won their class in each of the four grueling races in 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship. And three of the four races were run over race-record long courses for each event.


      With a perfect 4-0 record to win his class point standings in the 4-wheel vehicle classes was Vincent Munoz, Yucaipa, Calif. (Heavy Metal, No. 894 Ford Ranger).


     Besides Morgan/Samuels, the other motorcycle class winners who were undefeated in 2018 with identical 4-0 records in their respective classes, the other three undefeated Pro moto racers were Jano Montoya, Winter Garden, Fla. (Peru), (Pro Moto 40, No. 400x KTM 450EXCF), Giovanni Spinaly, El Cajon, Calif. (Pro Moto 50, No. 510x Yamaha YZ450FX) and Guy Laycraft, Canada (Pro Moto 60, No. 649x Honda CRF450X.


TRIPLE TIMERS


     Three additional class point champions who won three of the four SCORE Baja races in 2018 were Francisco Septien, Ensenada, Mexico (Pro Moto Ironman, Honda CRF450x), Viry Felix, Ensenada, Mexico (Class 11, Stock VW Sedan), Jesus Mendez Jr, Mexicali, Mexico (Pro UTV Unlimited, No. 1872 Can-Am X3 XRS) and Said Sanchez, Tijuana, Mexico (Pro Quad, Honda TRX450R).


     It was the veteran Septien’s seventh career SCORE season motorcycle class point title,  the second crown for Sanchez and the first for both Felix and Munoz.


     Felix is one of just female racers to win a SCORE Pro class point championship.


MORE PRO CLASS POINT CHAMPS


     Among the other 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship class point champs in Pro car/truck/UTV classes were Gustavo Vildosola Sr, Mexicali, Mexico/Scott Bailey, Riverside, Calif., who won the SCORE TT Legend class in the No. 12L Chevy Silverado-ID, Casey Currie, Norco, Calif. (Hammer Truck Unlimited, No. 4422 Jeep Wrangler), Eduardo Ramirez, Tecate, Mexico (Class 8, No. 809 Chevy Silverado), and Luis Herrera, Granada Hills, Calif. (Class 5-1600, No. 577 VW Baja Bug).


     The other rider of record class point champ in Pro motorcycle was Luis M. Gomez, Obregon, Mexico. (Pro Moto 30, No. 303x Honda CRF450x).


MULTI CLASS CHAMPIONSHIPS


     While everyone else was capturing their first, 11 of the 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship class season point champs have now won at least two season titles in their respective careers.


     Dan Chamlee captured his 14th SCORE career Class 7 title to move into a tie for third on the all-time career win list, Rob MacCachren earned his ninth SCORE career season class title, Francisco Septien won his seventh and Wayne Matlock won his sixth SCORE class crown.


     Picking up their fourth career SCORE class point titles in 2018 were Pancho Bio and Cisco Bio.


     Earning their third career SCORE class crown in 2018 were Ramon Bio and Jano Montoya while grabbing their second career SCORE class crowns were Gustavo Vildosola Sr, Brad Wilson, Gerardo Novelo O., Justin Morgan, Santiago Creel and Said Sanchez.


SPORTSMAN CHAMPS


    The 2018 Sportsman motorcycle point champion with 365 points and one race win in 2018 was the team led by Miguel Pena, Tijuana, Mexico in the No. 200x KTM 450EXC. Winning the title in the Sportsman Quad division with 370 points and three race wins in his class in 2018 was the team led by Danny Magdalena, Acton, Calif., on the No. 110a Honda TRX450R. In SPT Unlimited Buggy, Diane Gianelli of San Felipe, Mexico won two races on the way to winning the points in her class with 225 points in the No. 1577 Lothringer-VW.
